APPLIED STATISTICS

The B. A. Programme in Applied Statistics shall be of 24 credits in all, spread over two semesters;
each year consisting of two semesters. The titles of the papers, distribution of courses in semesters,
credits assigned to papers, etc., are given as follows :

1. Each theory and practical paper shall be of 100 marks. For evaluation, the overall structure of
the distribution of marks in a paper shall be such that 30 marks will be allotted to various
assessments during the semester and 70 marks shall be allotted to end semester examinations.

2. The assessment (sessional) in theory papers shall comprise of a class test of one hour duration
for 20 marks and 10 marks for regularity/assignment/viva/quiz/or any other similar test.

3. The 30 marks of sessional for practical papers shall be based on completion of the laboratory
exercises in due course of time/keeping up of practical record book/punctuality in the
class/viva to the practicals/any other relevant judgment.

4. There shall be ONE THEORY PAPER and ONE PRACTICAL PAPER in each semester.
The theory paper and the practical paper shall be of 4 credits and 2 credits respectively in
each of these semesters.

5. The theory papers shall be of THREE HOURS duration consisting of eight full length
questions in all out of which a student will be required to answer any five questions.

6. The PRACTICAL PAPER shall be of THREE HOURS duration. Out of 70 marks in end
semester examination, 50 marks will be assigned to the performance in practicals, 10 marks
on the practical record book and 10 marks on the viva-voce.

7. In all the theory papers emphasis will be on concepts and their applications. Rigourous
mathematical derivations should be avoided.

SEMESTER - I

BAS – 101 : STATISTICAL METHODS Credits : 4

General nature and scope of statistics, measurement scales, primary and secondary data,
methods of collection of primary data, methods of data representation – text, tabular and
diagrammatical representation.

Frequency distribution and principles governing their representation, graphical


representation of frequency distribution.

Measures of central tendency and their properties, uses and limitations, partition values.

Dispersion and its various measures with their properties and uses, coefficient of variation.

Central and raw moments upto fourth order. Skewness and kurtosis and their measures.

Bivariate data : Scatter diagram, product moment correlation coefficient, rank correlation,
regression lines and their uses.

Theory of attributes, association and contingency and their measures

BAS - 102 : PRACTICALS BASED ON COURSE NO. BAS – 101 Credits : 2

Students will be required to do the practicals, listed below :

1. Presentation of data by frequency tables, diagrams and graphs.


2. Measures of central tendency, partition values.
3. Measures of dispersion, relative measure of dispersion.
4. Moments, measures of skewness and kurtosis.
5. Calculations of correlation coefficient in univariate and bivariate tables. Rank correlation.
6. Association in contingency tables.

BAS – 201 : PROBABILITY AND STATISTICAL INFERENCE


Credits : 4

Elements of probability theory, additive and multiplicative theorems of probability. Mathematical


expectation.

Random variables : Concepts of discrete and continuous random variables, probability mass and
density functions, independence of random variables, distribution function.

Binomial, Poisson and normal distributions and their properties.

Estimation : Properties of a good estimator – unbiasedness, consistency, efficiency and their


examples.

Elements of testing of hypotheses : Simple and composite hypothesis, two types of errors, level of
significance, power of a test, critical region.

Definition of Z ( normal ) , t, chi-square and F statistics and their applications in significance


testing.

BAS – 301 : APPLIED STATISTICS Credits : 4

Nature and scope of statistical enquiries, framing of questionnaires, Indian official statistics
relating to agriculture, price, trade and labour, national income and census.

Theory of index numbers and their applications to price and production, link and chain relatives
composition of index numbers, Laspeyre’s, Paasche’s, Marshall and Edheworth’s and Fisher’s
index numbers, chain base index numbers, tests for index numbers, cost of living index numbers
and their construction.

Elements of vital statistics : Sources of demographic data, demographic characteristics of the


Indian population. Measurement of mortality, crude and standardized death rates, complete life
table, uses of life tables.
Measurement of fertility, crude birth rate, general fertility rate, age-specific birth rates, total
fertility rate, gross and net reproduction rates.
Population projection.

Concept of different components of time series, determination of trend and seasonal fluctuations.

4. Death rates : crude and standardized death rates.
5. Construction of life tables.
6. Fertility rates : Crude, general and total fertility rates.
7. Gross and net reproduction rates.
8. Determination of trend using moving average and least square methods.
9. Ratio to trend and link relative methods.

SEMESTER IV

BAS – 401 : SAMPLING, DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS AND QUALITY CONTROL


Credits : 4

One way and two way analysis of variance techniques.

Design of experiments : Principles of design – randomization, replication and local control,


completely randomized design, randomized block design and Latin square design.

Basic concepts of sampling from a finite population, sampling versus complete enumeration.
Simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, cluster sampling and systematic sampling .
Definitions of ratio, product and regression estimators. Idea of Non – sampling errors.

Statistical process and product control : Basic principles of control limits, construction of control
charts for mean, range, standard deviation, number of defectives, fraction defectives, and number
of defects.

1. Analysis of variance for one-way and two-way classified data.


2. Analysis of Completely Randomized design, Randomized Block Design and Latin Square
Design.
3. Sample selection in Simple Random Sampling and estimation of population mean and total.
4. Stratified Random Sampling, allocation of sample size.
5. Construction of control charts for mean, range, standard deviation, number of defectives,
fraction defectives and number of defects.
