Unit Overview Cooling Units
Overview
General Description
Uniflair™ Room Cooling units are precision air conditioners designed to
specifically meet the air conditioning needs of Data Centers and Internet
providers, data-processing centers, and any technological environment
characterized by high levels of heat value to dissipate. To ensure proper operation
of the equipment in such installations, it is essential to keep the temperature and
humidity conditions constant throughout the year; that is why the Room Cooling
units control the ambient conditions, not just cooling. The air-conditioning systems
intended for the purposes of “comfort” are designed specifically to ensure the well-
being of the people in the room and are generally incapable of ensuring that the
ambient conditions required by technologically sophisticated equipment can be
kept constant, especially in the presence of much higher specific heat loads. In
precision air conditioning applications, there are five main objectives to pursue:
• Air temperature control (±1.0°C (±1.8°F))
• Air humidity control (±7/8%)
• High airflow rate
• Year-round operation (24 hours a day, 365 days a year)
• Energy efficiency
In the air-conditioning of large technical rooms used for telephone and Internet
applications, the density of the heat load (per unit of surface area) is very high,
even as much as 6–10 times the density of the heat load in comparable areas
used as commercial offices, for instance. Standard air-conditioning equipments
used for ensuring comfort are unable to cope with such densities and types of heat
load, especially concerning the total absence of any latent load characteristic of
technological applications.

Cooling Units Unit Overview
Standard Features
Compact design The Uniflair™ Room Cooling direct expansion units deliver a high capacity of
cooling in a compact overall footprint. Since the system requires only front
service access, the units can be placed side by side and valuable floor space is
not wasted.
External panels The external panels are coated with RAL9003 epoxy-polyester paint, which
provides long-term durability of the original features. The panels are internally
insulated with a heat and soundproofing layer made of melamine (or bare fiber
glass, on request) covered by a protective film. The external coated panels are
fully compliant with UNI EN ISO 12944 - 1/2/3/4/5/6 and tested for installation in
atmospheric environments belonging to a corrosivity category classified at least
as C2, according to EN ISO 12944 - 2.
Electronic expansion valve The EEV provides accurate control of the refrigerant superheat in order to
(EEV) ensure an increase in efficiency at low external temperatures because it
enables the unit to operate at much lower condensing pressures than it would
be possible with a traditional mechanical valve.
Electronically commutated The Uniflair™ Room Cooling units come standard with highly efficient and
fans reliable EC fans. EC fans are quiet, require minimal maintenance, and produce
very low noise vibration. EC fans have the latest generation impellers made
from high-tech compound material with optimized flow control and high
efficiency GreenTechTM EC motors. The directly coupled EC motor is three-
phase with an external rotor with IP54 protection grade. The fan impeller is
statically and dynamically balanced with lifelong-lubricated bearings. Each fan
is easier to service with a quick-removal kit.
Full front service access The Uniflair™ Room Cooling units are designed for all maintenance work to be
accessible through the front of the unit ((850-mm (33.5-in.) service clearance
recommended).

WARNING
BURN RISK
Discharge lines must be insulated where contact could be made to avoid a
contact burn.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or
equipment damage.
The discharge line must be sized in such a way that it ensures the flow of oil at all
operating levels. Particular attention should be paid to operation at partial load on
units equipped with variable-speed compressors to provide oil return in all
conditions. Even if it is recommended to minimize load losses, using an oversized
discharge line to reduce the refrigerant speed would cause a decrease in the oil
flow. When the unit uses variable-speed drive compressors for the cooling circuit,
the discharge line must convey the oil at all operating levels.
The pressure drops along the discharge line cause an increase in the condensing
temperature and a decrease in the cooling capacity of the cooling unit. Note that
each percentage point of decrease in the cooling capacity corresponds to a
decrease of 1 °C of the maximum operating temperature. The systems are
normally sized in such a way that the loss of load from the discharge line does not
cause a decrease in the efficiency of the cooling unit of more than –3%. The
responsibility of installing the refrigerant line between the condenser and the
external unit lies with the installer. Units can operate with a maximum equivalent
length up to 100 meters (including a maximum height difference of 30 meters)
considering the consequent penalization in performance.
NOTE: When the distance of 50 meters equivalent length is exceeded, it is
required to contact Schneider Electric Customer Support.
The oil type is specific for each compressor. See the documentation
of the compressor.
To define the optimal refrigerant lines, please refer to UNICALC
Piping Size Tool.
NOTE: It is recommended to install the Check and Bypass Valve Kit and the
Low Temperature Kit according to the following table, where:
• L = refrigerant line length
• T = ambient temperature

It is required to install a syphon or oil trap every time the piping changes from a
horizontal to a vertical position.
It is also required to install a syphon or oil trap every 5 meters on the vertical
piping section.

The external condensers can be equipped with AC axial fans or electronically
commutated (EC) axial fans. Both fans are statically and dynamically balanced on
two levels and include protection grade IP54 class “F.” Safety protection grilles on
the fans comply with safety standards and regulations. AC and EC remote air-
cooled condensers are designed to operate in a wide range of external
temperatures ( -25°C ÷ 50°C). In case of lower external temperatures ( down to
-40°C), the OCC range offer a specific version OCCxxxxLT. Remote air-cooled
condensers for Low temperature applications are available only in single circuit
version and with AC fan. In case of Low Temperature applications the external
condenser is always powered by the indoor unit.
The condensing coil is constructed of copper tubes mechanically expanded onto
aluminum fins. The internal surface of the tubes is made in such a way as to
increase turbulence of the refrigerant and increase the exchange capacity
equivalent to that of the air supply produced. The large frontal area and upward
arrangement of the fans provide efficient air distribution.
The electrical connections of the condensers consist of a general main switch with
protection grade IP54 located on the fan side of the unit, a pressure transducer,
and a pre-wired speed regulator.
The fan speed pressure switch regulator on the low temperature units provide
control of the exchange capacity of the condenser by means of an electronic
device sensitive to the supplied gas pressure. The regulator varies the speed of
the fan motor to maintain constant condensation pressure.
In the remote condensers for low temperature applications (LT), the fan speed
regulator is installed inside the in-room unit. The indoor units manage the fan
speed regulator and the parameter of the remote condensers exclusively through
ModBus command. The remote condensers with 230V/1ph+N/50Hz power supply
are equipped with single phase fan speed regulator. In case of double refrigerant
circuit remote condenser, this type of regulator is able to control independently two
ventilation sections through ModBus signal.
The remote condensers with power supply 400V/3ph/60Hz are equipped with one
three phase fan speed regulator. In case of double refrigerant circuit, the remote
condenser is equipped with two speed regulators to manage independently two
ventilation sections.
Except for the OCC Low temperature version (LT) that are always powered by the
indoor units, in case of AC and EC condensers are selected, the indoor unit is
provided with set-up for power condenser only if it is configured with double power
supply. In this case the cooling unit can power one single refrigerant circuit
condenser single phase type (230V/1ph/50Hz).
Airflow Configurations
Horizontal Air Discharge
Units installed with a horizontal discharge must be protected from wind that can
interfere with the operation of the fan. This configuration is characterized by the
best protection from snow and objects falling from above, as well as for ease of
maintenance.

Main Components
Self-Supporting Frame
The structure of the unit is characterized by a metal framework and internal parts
made from of zinc-plated sheet steel. These profiles are connected together by
structural rivets designed to ensure sturdy assembly and to withstand severe
transport and handling conditions. The units are also equipped with internal
panels to isolate compartments affected by the produced airflow. These panels
are made of zinc-plated sheet fitted with captive screws and are used to ensure:
• Reduction in the noise transmitted through the paneling
• Air tightness even without external panels so that the units can also operate
with the doors open during servicing
• Inspection of internal elements without interfering with the operation of the
unit and while the unit is in operation
The external panels are coated with RAL9003 epoxy-polyester paint which
provides long term durability of the original features. The front panels are attached
to the framework by means of rapid coupling fasteners. The standard panels are
internally lined with heat- and sound-proofing insulating material made of
melamine covered by a protective film. Melamine is an exceptionally high-quality
product, coupled with high fire-resistance (class B1 according to DIN 4102, BS
476 part 7, V0 according to UL94, ASTM E84, class M1 according to NFP92–501)
and excellent sound-insulation properties.

SPEED (RPS)
Variable-speed compressors in I**V units provide a soft start that reduces in-rush
current, decreasing the impact on the power grid and allowing savings in energy
consumption during the year.
The VFD has built-in harmonic filters to provide easy installation and comply with
most industry standards (EMC).
Variable-speed compressors installed in the 1922A and 2022A models include
intermediate discharge valves (IDVs), which result in better energy efficiency at
partial load and at low-pressure ratios.
Fans
The units are equipped with single-inlet centrifugal fans with electronically
commutated (EC), backward curved fan blades made from a composite material.

Electrical Panel
The electrical panel is located in a compartment separated from the airflow and is
in compliance with the directive 2014/35/EU and related standards. The following
are the main features:
• Three-phase power supply 400 V/3 Ph+N/50 Hz for all units with a single
power supply
• Three-phase power supply 400 V/3 Ph+N/50 Hz for all units with double
power supplies
• Low-voltage secondary circuit 24 Vac with isolation transformer
• Metal isolation screen for protection from live components
• General isolator with mechanical interlock
• Thermo-magnetic circuit-breakers for protection
• Terminal board for no-voltage signal and control contacts
All of the units undergo a safety test cycle to check the continuity of the protection
circuit, the insulation resistance, and a voltage test (dielectric strength).
Mechanical Mode
In mechanical mode, the refrigerant undergoes the vapor compression cycle as it
evaporates to a low pressure in the DX evaporator in order to cool air from the IT
environment. The refrigerant is then compressed by the scroll compressor and
then condensed to a liquid in a plate heat exchanger (condenser).
A water/glycol mixture conveys heat from the refrigerant via the condenser to the
dry cooler.
In this mode, flow control device (B) is 100% open to direct the water/glycol
mixture from the dry cooler to the condenser. Flow control device (A) is 0% open
(closed) and flow control device (C) is closed so that the water/glycol mixture
bypasses the chilled-water coil and is introduced directly into the condenser.
The pressure drop of the system in mechanical mode is the sum of the pressure
drop across flow control device (B) and the condenser.

Hybrid Mode
In hybrid mode, flow control device (B) is 0% open (closed) and flow control device
(A) is 100% open so that the water/glycol mixture is directed through the chilled-
water coil and introduced to the heat exchanger (condenser).
The water/glycol mixture conveys heat from the refrigerant via the condenser to
the dry cooler.
Flow control device (C) remains closed. The pressure drop of the system during
hybrid mode is the pressure drop across the chilled-water coil and the condenser.
Flow control devices (A) and (C) are configured as “full port, which allows
negligible pressure drops.

Free-Cooling Mode
During free-cooling mode, the external air temperature is low enough to cool the
IT air to the set point temperature without the need of the evaporation cycle.
All flow control devices, (A), (B), and (C), may be used to control the water/glycol
mixture flow from the dry cooler to the chilled-water coil. In the dry cooler, the heat
is dissipated and the water/glycol mixture is cooled by the external air. In the
chilled-water coil, the heat is absorbed and the water/glycol mixture is heated by
the air in the IT space.
During free cooling mode, flow control devices (A) and (B) are modulated in order
to allow the water/glycol mixture flowing from the dry cooler to the chilled-water
coil or to flow control device (B).
Flow control device (C) is open in order to allow the water/glycol mixture (as the
combination of part of the flow coming from the dry cooler and part coming from
the chilled-water coil) to bypass the condenser and to go directly in the dry cooler.
Flow control devices (A) and (B) are modulated according to the room load, i.e.
the air temperature in the IT space.

Microprocessor Controller
Microprocessor Overview
The microprocessor control of the unit automatically manages unit operation and
has the following main components:
• Seven-inch, touch-screen, LCD display interface, externally mounted and
viewed from the front of the unit.
• Integrated microprocessor control board to which the probes are connected
as well as all of the analogical and digital inputs necessary for the unit control
(J5 controller).
The display interface is equipped with a seven-inch, touch-screen display. By
means of the display interface, it is possible to set operating parameters, monitor
the trends of the main working parameters, and read any alarm messages.
The J5 controller physically separates the internal I/O and external I/O. This
separation is achieved by placing the external I/O on the upper level of connectors
closest to the top of the assembly and internal I/O on the lower level of connectors
closest to the bottom of the assembly. The external connections on the upper level
are sometimes referred to as the “field interface” and offer a wide variety of
accessibility options such as external CAN and group CAN, isolated 2-wire and 4-
wire RS485 ports, NetBotz™ universal sensor ports, alarm/shutdown contacts,
USB ports (Host, Device), Ethernet, HDMI display interface, Modbus, and remote
shutdown input.
The control system enables the following functions:
• Temperature and humidity control based on a set point which can be
configured using the display interface
◦ Return temperature
◦ Supply temperature
◦ Remote temperature
◦ Reheat temperature
◦ Humidity (relative or absolute)
◦ Dehumidification (relative or absolute)
• Complete alarm detection system
• Alarm event history storage of up to 1500 events
• Alarm signal contacts that can be configured on the Web interface
• Automatic restart when power returns after a loss of power
• Remote switching on/off of the unit
• Configuration changes are protected on the display interface separately for
user settings and service settings
• Compatibility with EcoStruxure™ IT Software - cloud-based Datacenter
Management
• Operating hour counters and cycle counters for all main components
• Color touch screen display with graphic interface describing overall state of
the unit
• Provisions for runtime balancing based on run hour differences, a fixed delta
time, or a specific time and day of the week
• Units in standby able to automatically assist active units in the group when
demand is needed
• Service function allowing full manual control of the unit while providing
automatic protection of components
• Optionally select to deactivate heaters, humidifier, compressors, and/or
evaporator fans on loss of primary power in order to reduce the load on
emergency backup systems.

Water Detection Sensors
Uniflair Room Cooling units can be equipped with either rope water leak detection
sensors or spot water leak detection sensors to detect water leaks in the IT space.
Both types of sensors can be configured to stop unit operation upon the detection
of water.
Smoke/Fire Sensors
The smoke and fire sensors are field
installed on the side of the electrical
panel and wired to digital inputs inside
the electrical panel. If smoke or fire are
detected in the data center, the cooling
unit is shut down and audible and
visual alarms are produced via the
display interface.

The 24-V relay for external smoke/fire
sensors is available for data centers
that already have smoke and fire
sensors available. The relay is field
installed inside the electrical panel. If
smoke or fire are detected in the data
center, the cooling unit is shut down

and audible and visual alarms are
produced via the display interface.
Pressostatic Valve
A 2-way modulating ball valve varies the water flow through the brazed plate heat
exchanger to control the condensing temperature and let the compressor operate
within its own operating envelope with the highest efficiency. The 0...10-V signal
valve is controlled by the main unit controller according to the high pressure
reading.
The valve and the related piping and connections are shipped loose inside the unit
and are installed on the water outlet inside the fan module (under floor and
downflow units) or close to the unit (upflow units). The power and signal
connections are made through the dedicated cables connected to the electrical
panel.

Energy Meter
The energy meter is an optional component in the electrical panel, used to
monitor:
• the unit energy consumption
• the voltage between phases
• the current of each phase
• the cosphi power factor
• the power on each phase
• the energy consumption in kWh and kVAR/h
The calculation varies from country to country depending on the mix of renewable
and traditional energy sources. The installation country can be selected from a list
or entered manually if it is not available. The value of the coefficient is then able to
be automatically configured (source: International Energy Agency).
na4413a
The system also manages the constant pressure underneath the floor during
ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the floor and also when new servers
are installed, adapting the flow when the following events occur:
• New equipment is added
• The floor panels are opened during maintenance/installation of new
equipment (without creating hot spots in another point of the same room)
• Partition walls underneath the floor break or are damaged
The system is able to manage all of the information read by different units and
define combined regulation strategies by means of a local area network (LAN)
connection and is able to define the nominal pressure value requested via the
microprocessor control settings. The system can read the average pressure value
of a specific area (one for each unit) with its management logic. The system may
have a single point of reference in the room or may be managed according to
various areas. In the second case, it is possible to control all units based on the
average pressure read by all of the units with the exception of the areas in which
the pressure differs too much from the average value. In this case, the units within
this area manage the airflow independently in such a way that this specific single
area also returns to a nominal value.
The system manages the increase in room dimensions over time, automatically
changing the cooling capacity and the airflow depending on the number of units,
grilles, and air distribution systems added. This enables the fans absorption to be
reduced: when the room is not complete, the airflow needed is lower than the
nominal value. When a unit is in standby, it is recommended to keep it switched on
in order to optimize the energy efficiency, especially at partial loads.
Group Control
Overview
The following group activities are available when units are grouped together on a
network and are managed by the group controller:
• Redundancy designates a set of standby units, one of which will be placed
into operation in the event of failure of the active unit.
• Runtime balancing changes roles of active and standby units to maintain an
even runtime of unit components across the cooling group.
• Assist activates a standby unit when the active unit is unable to meet the
cooling demand. This is supported for both temperature and humidity.
Group Controller
The group controller is selected by the group members when the group is created.
The selected group controller remains the group controller until the unit is no
longer on the network or the group is connected to another network and the group
controller loses an arbitration.
Group Data
Group data are data shared among the group. When entered on any display
interface of a unit in the group, the data is broadcast to the entire group. The group
controller ensures that a new member of the group has data consistent with the
other group members.
Redundancy
A unit in the group has one of the possible states:
• Active: The unit is providing environmental control.
• Standby: The unit is not currently providing environmental control but is
ready to become active if an active unit fails or requires assistance.
• Assist: The unit is providing environmental control in response to a request
for assistance. When assistance is no longer required, the unit returns to the
standby state.
Operation
The number of active units in the group is determined by the Number of Units in
Group minus the Number of Standby Units in Group. By default, the group
controller will select which units are primary units and which units are standby
units. The group controller will designate the unit with the least system runtime as
an active unit. A unit can be forced to be an active unit by selecting Primary Only
as the Preferred Role.
The group controller maintains the active number of units in the group. If there are
no standby units available to replace an active unit, a No Standby Units
Available alarm is activated.
Events that activate a standby unit are configured via the Web interface; the active
unit will switch over to a standby unit if one is available. When the issue with the
active unit has been resolved and the alarm is cleared by user acknowledgment,
the previously active unit will come back online, and the group controller will return
the currently active unit to standby mode.
Runtime Balancing
Runtime balancing maintains even runtimes on units within a group. Runtime
balancing can be turned off via the Run Time Balancing setting.
An active unit will switch roles with a standby unit when the system runtime
exceeds the set threshold. The threshold is set in one of the following ways:
• Differential: The roles are switched when the system runtime of the active
unit exceeds the system runtime of the standby unit. This difference in
runtime is set in the Runtime Balancing Difference setting.
• Time relative: The roles are switched after the Relative Switchover Time: it
is the time passed since the previous switchover.
• Scheduled: The roles are switched on the day and time entered in the Day of
Week Switchover Time setting.
When the switchover occurs, the group controller selects a standby unit with the
least amount of system runtime. The group controller will also maintain both units
running until the Switchover Handoff Time expires.
Assist
The assist mode activates a standby unit to assist the active unit when the active
unit cannot maintain the relevant set point alone. Assisting is provided for cooling,
humidification, and dehumidification.
Only one standby unit is allocated to assist at a time. When selecting a unit as the
assisting unit, the group controller will attempt to select a unit that supports both
the temperature and humidity control assist. If a unit with both is not available, the
group controller will select a unit with the desired assist function enabled.
Cooling assist: The group controller will assign a standby unit to assist when the
air temperature process variable exceeds the set point plus the Cooling Assist
Threshold. The unit will be returned to standby mode when it no longer has a
demand.
Humidification assist: The group controller will assign a standby unit to assist
when the humidity is below the set point minus the Humidify Assist Threshold.
The unit will be returned to standby mode when it no longer has a demand.
Dehumidification assist: The group controller will assign a standby unit to assist
when the humidity is above the set point plus the Dehumidify Assist Threshold.
First Aid
IMPORTANT: The following measures can be carried out by trained and
qualified personnel only.
