Valves

What is a valve?

It is a mechanical device used in connection with pressure-containing vessels to stop or regulate

fluid flow as necessary.

Types of valves

 Globe valve

 Gate valve

 Check valve

 Ball valve

 Butterfly valve

Globe valve

This is a valve that uses linear motion of the closing member to either open or close fluid flow

through the piping system. The closing component is known as disc. To open fluid flow, the disc

moves upwards leaving space for the fluid to flow. To close the valve, the disc moves down to

make firm contact with valve seat and thus closing fluid flow.

Check valve

This is a valve used to allow fluid flow in one direction only thus they prevent backflow. This

valve is automatic in its operation since the disc is opened when fluid moves forward and it

closes when fluid attempts to flow backwards.

Gate valve
This valve operates by moving the closing member upwards to close fluid flow. The closing

member is known as gate. It is the most commonly used compared to the globe and check valve.

They are suitable for use where there is need for frequent opening and closing since they have

long service life.
