ASSIGNMENT: Types Of Valves
Valves
It is a device used to regulating the supply in a distribution system, they
are used to isolate and drain pipe sections for testing inspection cleaning
and repairing. The are located at road corners at intersection points
where dia of the pipe changes.

Types of Valves
In piping following types of valves are used depending on the
requirements. The cost of Valve in the piping system is up to 20 to
30% of the overall piping cost. And the cost of a given type and size
of the valve can vary 100%. It means that if you choose a ball valve
over a butterfly valve for the same function. It can cost you more.
The following types of valves can be listed here.

• Gate or Sluice Valve

• Globe Valve
• Check or foot Valve
• Plug or Cone valve
• Ball Valve
• Butterfly Valve
• Needle Valve
• Pinch Valve
• Pressure Valve
• Air Relief Valve
• Below off Valve

1. Gate or Sluice Valve:

A gate valve is the most common type of valve in any process plant.
It is a linear motion valve used to start or stop fluid flow. In service,
these valves are either in a fully open or fully closed position. Gate
valves are used in almost all fluid services such as air, fuel gas,
feedwater, steam, lube oil, hydrocarbon, and all most any services.
2. Globe Valve:
They are used in houses for plumbing. They are poor
in hydraulics that is why they are not used in
distribution system. It is a type of valve used for
regulating flow in a pipeline, consisting of a movable
plug or disc element and a stationary ring seat in a
generally spherical body.

3. Check or Foot Valve:

The check valve prevents backflow in the piping
system. The pressure of the fluid passing through a
pipeline opens the valve, while any reversal of flow
will close the valve.

4. Plug or Cone Valve:

Plug valve is a Quarter-turn rotary motion Valve that
uses a tapered or cylindrical plug to stop or start the
flow. The disk is in plug shape, which has a passage
to pass the flow. They are used for water under
higher pressure for sewerage, oils, abrasive liquids
and gases.
5. Ball Valve:
A Ball valve is a quarter-turn rotary motion valve
that uses a ball-shaped disk to stop or start the flow.
Most ball valves are of the quick-acting type, which
requires a 90° turn of the valve handle to operate
the valve.

6. Butterfly Valve:
A Butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotary motion
valve, that is used to stop, regulate, and start the
flow. The butterfly valve has a short circular body.
Butterfly Valve is suitable for large valve applications
due to Compact, lightweight design that requires
considerably less space, as compared to other valves.

7. Needle Valve:
Needle valves are similar to a globe valve in
design with the biggest difference is the
sharp needle-like disk. Needle valves are
designed to give very accurate control of flow
in small diameter piping systems.
8. Pinch Valve:
The pinch valve is also known as a clamp valve. It is a
linear motion valve. Used to start, regulate, and stop
fluid flow. It uses a rubber tube, also known as a pinch
tube, and a pinch mechanism to control the fluid.
Pinch Valve is ideally suited for the handling of
slurries, liquids with large amounts of suspended
solid.

9. Pressure Relief Valve:

A relief valve or pressure relief valve is a type of
safety valve used to control or limit the pressure in
a system; pressure might otherwise build up and
create a process upset, instrument or equipment
failure, or fire.

10. Air Relief Valve:

Air Relief Valve function to release air pockets that
collect at each high point of a full pressured
pipeline. An air relief valve can open against
internal pressure, because the internal lever
mechanism multiplies the float force to be greater
than the internal pressure.
11. Below Off Valve:
A blow-off valve, dump valve or compressor bypass valve, is a
pressure release system present in most turbocharged engines. Its
main purpose is to take the load off the turbocharger when the
throttle is suddenly closed.
