Recognizing the Correct Subject-Verb Agreement


The verb must always agree with its subject in person and in number.
1. A singular subject requires a singular verb; a plural subject requires a plural verb.
Examples:
A kite flies above the trees.
Jenny writes beautiful poems.
2. Compound subjects connected by and require plural verbs unless the subjects refer to the
same person or thing, or express a single idea.
Examples:
My father and mother like to watch TV together.
The new chair and manager is coming today.
3. Compound subjects connected by and but preceded by each, every, any, a, or no require a
singular verb.
Examples:
Each man and woman is free to speak out.
Every plant and tree needs water.
4. Singular subjects with singular verbs—does, doesn’t, is, was, there is, there was.
Examples:
She doesn’t like her new dress.
There was a loud explosion nearby.
5. Plural subjects with plural verbs – do, don’t, are, were, there are, there were.
Examples:
Some pupils don’t study their lessons.
Were the donations distributed to the indigents?

6. You as a subject always uses are and were.


Examples:
Are you coming with us?
You were a hit at the program.
7. Distributive pronouns like each, either, neither and indefinite pronouns like anyone, no one,
anybody, nobody, everyone, someone, and somebody are always singular and require
singular verbs.
Examples:
Each of the members sings well.
Everyone is invited to the party.
