HEPA FILTER THEORY

 Filter – A device for removing impurities

 HEPA – High Efficiency Particulate Air
 Micron – micrometer or 1 x 10-6m
 Efficiency – In engineering term, it is Output/Input and express in % and it will
never exceed 100%
 A filter can remove either particles or gas
 Typically, what are gas filters made of?

randomly laid perpendicular to the airflow

 The fibres may range in size from less than 1 μm to greater

than 50 μm in diameter.

 Filter packing density may range from 1% to 30%.

 Pleated Borosilicate Fibres with acrylic binders

Formaldehyde

• Changes DNA structure (not an oxidizer)

Advantages

• Very well characterized

• Inexpensive

Issues

• Potential carcinogen
• Potential residue (fall – out)
• Hydrogen chloride in the presence of formaldehyde, at ambient conditions will form
the carcinogen, bis (chloromethyl) ether (BCME).

Advantages

• Safe by – products (water and oxygen)

• No residue
• Industry accepted
• Not potential carcinogen ( unlike formaldehyde)

Hydrogen peroxide (H2o2) Vapor

Issues

• Instability of HP toward condensation and /or decomposition

• Under certain conditions may not be effective at penetrating filters or cellulose

materials

• May effect decontamination or aeration time

• Potentially corrosive

• Validated procedures not yet published in NSF/ANSI 49
