Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to
CO1: Discuss about automobile body construction, engines and automobile emissions (L2)
CO2: Explain various transmission systems and transmission elements (L2)
CO3: Describe braking systems, steering systems and axles (L2)
CO4: Explain various suspension systems, wheel, tyre assembly and accessory systems (L2)
CO5: Differentiate between principle of operation of conventional automobile, hybrid vehicle and
electric vehicle (L2)

UNIT- I 10 Lectures
Automotive Body: Introduction, types and classification of automobiles, chassis and body, types of
frames, defects in frames. Different systems in an automobile and their brief introduction.
Engine, Auxiliary systems and emissions: Engines, different parts - materials and auxiliary systems,
engine terminology. Auxiliary systems – Engine lubrication: wet sump lubrication – forced lubrication,
dry sump lubrication – Engine cooling: air cooling system, water-cooling system – radiator, Fuel
induction: Carburetor, MPFI, CRDI, Ignition Systems – electronic ignition system. Automobile
emissions – harmful effects, pollution control measures, catalytic converters, exhaust system layout,
mufflers, and resonators.
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. describe various automobiles and their body construction (L2)
2. explain various parts of an engine and its auxiliary systems (L2)
3. explain the formation of emissions and control methods (L2)

UNIT- II 10 Lectures
Transmission: Manual transmission – types of gearbox – sliding mesh, constant mesh and synchromesh
gearboxes, Dog-clutches – gearshift mechanism, Automatic transmission – torque converter – fluid
coupling – epi-cyclic gear train. Clutch – operation – types – multi-plate – cone clutches – construction
and lining.
Driveline: Propeller shafts – universal joints – slip joint – Hotch-Kiss drive – torque tube drive.
Differential. Trans-axle and transfer case. Radius rods. Four wheel drive arrangement.

Learning Outcomes: A the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain various types of transmission systems in an automobile (L2)
2. describe various clutch mechanisms for manual and auto transmission (L2)
3. explain the functions of various parts of a driveline (L2)

UNIT- III 10 Lectures


Braking Systems: Layouts for mechanical braking, pneumatic braking, hydraulic braking-master
cylinder, wheel cylinder, tandem cylinder, shoe brakes-materials, disc brakes, requirements of brake fluid,
power brakes, concept of Anti- lock braking system (ABS) and traction control, parking brakes.
Steering System: Principles and need of steering, steering assembly steering gear, steering ratio, steering
lock, turning radius, centre point steering, wheel geometry, power steering principle and typical schemes,

Front axle scheme and end connections, rear axle, functions, types of rear axle, loads on rear axles, axle-
casing.
Learning Outcomes: At end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain different types of braking systems and stability control (L2)
2. discuss various steering gear mechanisms and systems (L2)
3. explain steering geometry and axles of an automobile (L2)

UNIT- IV 10 Lectures
Suspension System: Functions of suspension, component parts, materials, coil springs, leaf springs, air
springs, shock absorbers, torsion bars, stabilizer bars, and typical combinations of components in
suspension systems, MacPherson strut suspension-merits.
Wheel Tyres and Accessories Systems: Wheel assembly and parts, pressed wheels and cast wheels,
wheel rim, tyres, aspect ratio, tyres with tubes and tubeless tyres, advantages, construction of a tyre,
plies, radial plies, tyre treads and tyre specifications. Generator circuit and need for cut-out, starting with
solenoid and over-running clutch, circuits for flashers, horn, wind screen wiper, fuel level indicator,
speedometer.

Learning Outcomes: At end of this unit, the student will be able to


1. name various suspension systems of an automobile (L1)
2. discuss about the wheels, tyres and their construction (L2)
3. identify various accessories systems in an automobile (L1)

UNIT- V 10 Lectures
Electric Vehicles: Layout of an electric vehicle, system components, traction motor characteristics,
transmission, electronic control system, advantage and limitations, performance and energy consumption
of electric vehicles.
Hybrid Vehicles: Concepts of hybrid electric drivetrain based on hybridization and powertrain
configuration, architecture of series, parallel and series-parallel hybrid electric drivetrains, modes of
operation, merits and demerits, plug-in hybrid architecture, speed and torque coupling of hybrid electric
drivetrains.

Learning Outcomes: At end of this unit, the student will be able to


1. list various system components of an electric vehicle (L1)
2. explain the various architectures of hybrid drive trains. (L2)
3. discuss the advantages and disadvantages of electric and hybrid vehicles. (L2)
