CELTA Online Unit 28 Task 9: Advice Sheets

Many schools will have displays of posters with ideas for accessing English and others will often give
students advice sheets at the beginning of a course on how to improve their English outside school.

Language skill/system Advice

Writing Write a journal of your life in English.
Listening Lots of CDs come with the words of the songs. Read while you listen.
Speaking Arrange to meet another student from the school at the weekend or
evening, and speak English together - even if you come from the same
country!
Grammar Every time you read something, pick out a grammar point you don’t
understand and try to look it up in a self-study grammar book; ask your
teacher if you need help.
Pronunciation Practise reading aloud at home, or why not record yourself onto a cassette,
then listen to how it sounds.
General Make a plan of what you want to learn each week (for example, vocabulary
areas and topics), then plan your listening and reading around this.
Lexis Test yourself from your lexical notebook while you are on the underground
or bus.

Commentary
N.B. This kind of matching activity can be done on cards in class and students can take away a complete
copy of the advice. The advice can, of course, be extended and graded to the appropriate level.
