General Teaching Tips to Teachers

At every opportunity:

 Use audiovisual aids relevant to the topic throughout the lessons as these attract students’ attention, help them understand and
remember the lesson objective, stimulate their interest and helps to limit L1. You’ll find a selection of images in the slides
DVD.
 Make sure that the level of language you use in the classroom is suitable for the level.
 Use brainstorming throughout the lessons to prepare students for reading/vocabulary/writing as this arouses students’ interest,
prepares them for the exercise and activates prior knowledge on the subject, which facilitates understanding.
 Encourage students to work in groups/pairs because this helps them develop their communicative skills, while making them
feel self-confident and it also promotes team work.
 Guide your students to self correct. It boosts their confidence and helps them to avoid repeating their mistakes. If this is not
feasible, then you may want to use peer correction.
 Make extensive use of the board for multiple reasons (presenting, correcting, brainstorming and explaining) and always try to
bring the students to the board whenever possible.
 Encourage students to take notes during the lesson and guide them to write down the most important points (phrasal verbs,
expressions, collocations, challenging grammar points etc).
 Use a variety of exercises to suit different learner needs/interests or learning styles.
 Limit/eliminate the use of L1 in the classroom by using audiovisual aids, gesture and synonyms/antonyms/examples.
 Use retrieval strategies and/or eliciting whenever possible. This makes students active participants and activates prior
knowledge necessary for understanding
 Personalise the lesson whenever possible. It is more interesting for students to talk/read/listen to something that relates to their
everyday life/experiences.
 When planning your lesson, please ensure that you download or click on links/images beforehand, to check they are still
applicable & that nothing unsuitable for classroom viewing appears on the screen.

At the beginning of each lesson:

 Go over homework, making sure you pay special attention to areas where students appear to be facing difficulties.
 Complete a dictation activity, using the vocabulary you assigned. This can either be done using definitions, synonyms, visuals,
antonyms or gapped sentences.

Time Management:
When you assign an exercise or team/group work, remember to tell them how much time they have to complete it. This will
ensure more effective time management throughout the lesson.

Skill Integration
Please remember to integrate all skills during the lesson.

REMEMBER!

 Please note that this lesson plan has been provided for guidance and it should be
used in accordance with the needs of your students.
