Companion
The Companion is to be used as its title suggests – as a companion to the course book. Students should be encouraged to use
it at home to look for new words they have come across in the course book. They should be encouraged to look at the
English definitions and example sentences, NOT to look only at the Greek translations. The exercises can be used for extra
practice, either in class or at home, or for revision purposes.

Contents
The student’s book consists of 12 theme-based units with a separate Test Book. After every unit, there is a Reload section &
after every two units, a Progress Review. There is a Grammar Reference to support the theory presented in each unit, a
writing bank and a speaking bank.

Each unit has the following sections:

 Reading
  Speaking
 Grammar  Writing
 Listening
Description of Sections

Reading
All reading texts are designed to familiarize students with a wide range of sources and registers, and to train them to develop the
skills necessary to process the various texts and deal with the exam tasks. There is a short introduction to the Reading section,
which gives students an insight into the topic of the Reading text.

The section provides various tasks to consolidate the students will encounter in the reading text. It provides plenty of practice,
helping students to develop the appropriate exam skills. There are exercises that focus on collocations, idioms, phrasal verbs, word
building and useful expressions.

Grammar
In order to help students consolidate grammatical structures that they have learnt, grammar is worked on within each unit. New
grammatical material is introduced through an inductive approach, in order to encourage students to use what they already know.
In this way, you have the opportunity to focus on retrieval strategies. The grammar is then included in exam type tasks.

Listening
The recordings reflect the exam tasks that students will be exposed to and they are drawn from a variety of authentic sources.

Speaking
The speaking section provides practice for the speaking tasks students will encounter in their exams.

Writing
The writing section introduces students to different kinds of written models which they are required to be familiar with for their
exams.

Reload
Each unit concludes with a Reload section. It is designed to practice and reinforce the and grammar students are exposed to in
each unit.

Test Book
The Test Book is a separate book that students need to hand in to the teacher at the start of the course, from wherein the teacher
can remove Progress Tests following the completion. There is a Progress Review after every two units a Mid-Year Test and an
End-of-Year Test.
Other Notes to Teachers

Activate your Grammar & Vocabulary

Activate your Grammar & Vocabulary has been specifically written to help students consolidate their grammar and in order to
progress to a B2 level. It includes general grammar & tasks, as well as exam-based tasks.

Please note that the section should be used according to students’ needs and as such, a selection of the exercises should be
covered.

IWB Software
If you have an interactive whiteboard, always use the whiteboard software to play the recording of the reading text.
If the school has an Interactive Whiteboard, always use the software to
 play the recording of the reading text
 go over the exercises
 enlarge the grammar box
 go through the listening, speaking & writing tasks
Please ensure that students are actively involved when the Interactive Whiteboard is used.
General Teaching Tips

When planning your lesson, please ensure that you download or click on links/images beforehand, to check they are still
applicable & that nothing unsuitable for classroom viewing appears on the screen.

At the beginning of each lesson:

 Go over homework and focus on areas students appear to have difficulties in.

During every lesson, please make sure that you lay emphasis on the following:

 Please make sure that the level of the English language you use is in accordance with the level of your students. This will
help you use the target language extensively and will ensure you limit the use of Greek.
 Ensure that you use the board extensively in order to present, correct, brainstorm & explain structures and new lexical
items.
 Use brainstorming throughout the lessons to prepare students for reading//listening/speaking/writing as this arouses their
interest and activates prior knowledge.
 Always focus on self-correction and give students the opportunity to correct their own mistakes. This will boost their
confidence and ensure they avoid making the same mistakes in the future. If they are unable to do so, please focus on
peer correction.
 Learner-centered activities should be encouraged. Please make sure that your students works in pairs or groups at every
opportunity, as this will boost their confidence, ensure that they communicate in the target language and familiarize them
with the use of the English language. Also, please ensure that you enable them to personalize the topic of the lesson.
 Audio-visual aids should be used whenever possible, whether this involves the presentation of a grammatical structure,
new lexical items, and the introduction to speaking/listening/writing.
 A variety of exercises should be used.
 L1 should be limited as much as possible, with the use of slides/audio visual aids, gesture and the board.
 Time Management: When you assign an exercise or team/group work, remember to tell them how much time they have
to complete it. This will ensure more effective time management throughout the lesson.

REMEMBER!
This lesson plan has been provided as guidance and should always be used according to your students’
needs.
