Terms of Reference GIS SPECIALIST

PT. Southridge Utama Nusantara (SUN), an environmental services advisory firm focused on Nature
Based Solutions (NBS), is seeking a GIS Specialist to join its team. The GIS Specialist will be required
to produce high-quality maps based on spatial analysis information, maintain a comprehensive
spatial database for the SUN project areas, provide technical assistance on GIS, develop near-real-
time monitoring systems, and support carbon monitoring assessment.

The GIS specialist will work in close collaboration with SUN Management and other stakeholders.
This is a full-time position with an initial 1-year contract based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Travel to project
sites will be required.

Responsibilities

Prepare maps and undertake spatial analyses


• Perform spatial analysis and produce high-quality maps and reports including QA/QC
analyses;
• Support the analysis of remote-sensing data (e.g., satellite images) in order to assess land use
changes, burnt areas from hotspots analysis, and other relevant remote sensing assessments;
• Assist in the compilation and analysis of relevant site-based management information to
support the development of project (near-real-time) monitoring systems;
• Undertake ground-truthing as needed, in conjunction with project field staff, in order to verify
the maps and spatial analyses produced and to determine levels of accuracy;
• Provide technical inputs on GIS and remote sensing for project monitoring and evaluation;
• Develop high-quality maps for project documentation, reports and other communications
materials.

Establish and maintain a database of GIS and remote-sensing data


• Conduct and assist in the acquisition, processing, analysis, and management of spatial data
relevant to conservation and restoration (NBS) projects;
• Support the maintenance of a geospatial database containing GIS, remote sensing and other
spatial and non-spatial data;
• Continually identify, acquire, and quality-assure the database with external spatial data
relevant to carbon projects developed by SUN;
• Ensure the spatial database is appropriately stored and regularly backed up;
• Provide technical support to the development and maintenance of the database for the
carbon monitoring system;
• Provide advice on appropriate GIS, spatial analysis and database software.

Technical support
The GIS Officer will contribute to the identification and implementation of effective technical
solutions for assessments of NBS projects. These responsibilities will include the creation and
management of data collection tools, delivery of training on data cleaning and management
techniques, support for data analysis, and assistance to projects in fulfilling the monitoring tasks that
include GIS information.
Requirements
• Minimum bachelor’s degree (S1) in Geography, Forestry, Landscape Ecology, or
Environmental Studies. A Masters’ degree in a related field and at least 2 years of experience
is preferred.
• Expert knowledge of, and hands-on experience with, spatial analysis, land cover/land use class
interpretation, hotspots datasets, field mapping and GPS use, geo-referencing with remote
sensing and image processing.
• Strong working experience with GIS software packages, especially QGIS and ArcGIS, and
related data compilation and analysis experience.
• Experience with metadata standards of geospatial data.
• Practical experience in conducting carbon inventory and mapping following methodologies
published by international certification standards such as Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard
(VCS) would be an advantage.
• Proficiency in both English and Indonesian languages is preferred.
