GIS Officer

person to fill the position of GIS Officer.

About Fairventures Worldwide

Fairventures Worldwide FVW is a German-based international development


organization that drives large-scale forest landscape restoration. FVW partners
with communities to develop and test site-specific solutions, ranging from
reforestation with fast-growing tree species to non-timber forest products and
agroforestry. FVW aims to restore ecosystems and create livelihood opportunities
for local communities, while contributing to the mitigation of climate change and
creating added value along the tropical-timber value chain.

Purpose of the position

The officer will be responsible for the effective management of Fairventures


Worldwide's GIS application and other related duties. S/he will assist in the design,
development, implementation and maintenance of GIS systems and other mobile
technologies, as well as tracking the project's implementation through GIS. S/he
will also be responsible for a wide variety of tasks for ongoing geospatial projects
in Uganda.

Duties & responsibilities

● Lead the process for the development of a GIS framework.


● Prepare, manipulate, and manage all data and systems for the timely
update of the GIS field monitoring system.
● Utilize GIS and mobile monitoring techniques to provide a better
understanding of certain variables in a given geographic location.
● Produce detailed, high-quality cartographic products and accompanying
reports in accordance with technical guidelines and needs.
● Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources,
including field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and
existing maps.
● Review GIS data for accuracy.
● Perform geospatial modelling and spatial analysis.
● Train or build the capacity of the program's team in GIS skills where
necessary.
● Administer and troubleshoot applications and provide GIS solutions.
● Research and test new research tools, such as the TREE App.
● Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Qualification Required & Experience

● Degree in Computer/Information Science, Earth sciences, Geography.


● Knowledge of GIS, Maps & Graphs designs presentations.
● Certifications may include GISP or Certified Mapping Scientist, GIS/LIS.
● At least 2-3 years of experience in GIS and considerable knowledge of
computerised information systems.
● Ability to use both quantitative and qualitative data in program design.
● Good problem-solving skills, analytical skills and conceptual ability.
● Very good at database management.
● Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint,
Publisher and Access as well as statistical packages (i.e, SPSS, etc)
● Must have good working knowledge in ArcGIS and other geomapping
packages.
● Must be a proactive team player with strong interpersonal skills and a high
level of initiative, innovation, and drive.
