2. Use the Computer Laboratory Safely

1) What is a “Computer Laboratory”?


It is a space which provides computer services. Computers and other computer accessories
like printers, scanners and multi-media projectors have been installed in the laboratory.

2) Why do we have to use the computer laboratory safely?


Because computers and other accessories in a lab are expensive and valuable and a large
amount of money has to be spent to repair a device, if it is damaged or to replace a new one.

3) Name two categories that comes when we consider using the computer laboratory correctly.

4) What are the steps we should follow to ensure our safety when we are in the laboratory?
I. Being careful when touching devices (wires and socket) that are connected to
electricity.
II. Should be aware of the exit doors of the laboratory.
III. Should be aware of fire extinguishers if any.
IV. Avoid running and playing inside the computer laboratory.

5) What are the steps we should follow to ensure safety of the devices when we are in the
laboratory?
I. Do not supply power to devices without correct instructions.
II. The laboratory and all the equipment should be kept clean and dust-free.
III. All the equipment must be switched off properly after use.
IV. The used equipment should be placed in the proper place.
V. Footwear should be removed and place outside the laboratory.
VI. Avoid taking food, water or other liquid into the laboratory because they may damage
the equipment.
VII. Virus scanning should be done when connecting external storage devices such as
flash drives to the computer.

6) Write down the steps you should follow when we switch on a computer.
I. First, supply electricity to the computer by turning on switch connected to computer.
II. If the computer is connected to an uninterrupted power supply (UPS), turn it on.
III. Next, the system unit should be switched on.
IV. Finally, the monitor should be turned on.

7) Write down the steps you should follow when we switch off a computer.
I. First, close any programme that have been opened.
II. Then, select the command ''Shutdown'' and click on it.
III. Switch off the power on/off button of the monitor when it's screen becomes dark.
IV. Then, switch off the UPS
V. Finally switch off the wall switch.

10) Name some “Computer Ethics”.


 Must use computers without disturbing others.
 Must avoid hacking computer activities of others.
 Software which should be used by paying money should not be faked or copied.
 Must refrain from accessing computer files and articles of others without permission.
 Must not repair any computer devices without proper instructions.
 Must not access the internet without the supervision of teachers.
 Should not uninstall / change / delete any programmes without the permission of the
teacher.

11) Why should we maintain correct posture when using a computer?


In order to reduce the illnesses, occur due to the lack of maintaining a correct posture.
