Alkali-free setting accelerator for shotcrete
DESCRIPTION
Mapequick AFK 888 is an alkali-free, inorganic salt-
based liquid accelerator, with which it is possible to
produce shotcrete characterised by rapid setting times
and a very quick development of its strength after only
a very short curing time.
WHERE TO USE
Mapequick AFK 888 is suitable for application by both
wet-mix and dry-mix spraying system and, thanks to its
acceleration properties and absence of alkali, it is
particularly suitable for spraying high quality concrete
which has high strength after a very short (0-60 min.),
short (60 min.-24 hours) or long (> 24 hours) curing time.
Mapequick AFK 888, however, does not only act on
the hydration of the silicates present in the cement to
give a quick setting time, but it also leads to the
concrete developing a high level of strength after only
a few minutes of it being applied and practically
eliminates the reduction in resistance after long curing
times compared with the same concrete with no
accelerator.
Mapequick AFK 888, thanks to the absence of alkali,
reduces the risk of alkali-aggregate reactions.
Mapequick AFK 888 is suitable for grouts and concrete
application even in presence of water during the
tunnelling operations. In fact Mapequick AFK 888
maintains its setting times and mechanical strength
development although the water presence. As a result,
Mapequick AFK 888 reduces the risk of clogging when
draining off water.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Mapequick AFK 888 is a water solution of aluminium
complexes to be added at the spraying nozzle during
the spraying phase. The acceleration of the setting time
and the development of mechanical performance vary
according to the dosage of the admixture, the type and
amount of cement, the ageing of the cement and the
water-binder ratio used.
The temperature of the shotcrete also does influence
the rate of setting and early performance.
As far as the water-binder (only cement or cement-fly
ash, silica fume or blast furnace slag, limestone powder,
etc) ratio of the concrete is concerned, the concept of
the water-binder ratio being no higher than 0.5 to
promote durability and final mechanical performance
must be stressed. For this reason, the addition of a
superplasticizer is absolutely recommended.

The use of Mapequick AFK 888 means that
shotcrete may even be applied in a single
layer of approximately 20 cm.
A further characteristic of the shotcrete
when Mapequick AFK 888 is used, is
that the sprayed concrete bonds better to
rocky surfaces. As a result, when using
Mapequick AFK 888, the amount of waste
due to rebound is strongly reduced, and its
capacity of penetrating between the various
layers is improved.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Do not use Mapequick AFK 888 with
ordinary concrete.
Mapequick AFK 888 must not be mixed
with other setting accelerators. When
another type of accelerator is used
(especially alkali-based), the whole of the
dosage equipment and piping where the
setting accelerator passes must be flushed
with water.

HOW TO USE
Example of shotcrete:
• 360-500 kg/m3 of cement (type and dosage
to be determined according to performance
requirements);
• if necessary, the addition of 3-8% of by
weight of cement of fine-graded material
with pozzolanic action. For example, silica
fume-based Mapeplast SF to improve the
rheological properties, thixotropy,
permeability and resistance to aggressive
chemical agents.
• Aggregates with a maximum diameter of
8 to 12 mm.
• Superplasticiser at a dosage of 0.8-1.5% in
volume by weight of cement to guarantee a
low water-binder ratio.
• Mapequick AFK 888 admixture at a
dosage of 3 to 8% in weight to be added
at the spraying nozzle.
• If necessary, use a retardant admixture
to inhibit cement hydration, such as
Mapetard SD2000 or in alternative
Mapetard D, to keep it workable for up
 to 72 hours even at high temperatures
(35°-40°C).
LABORATORY TESTING
The company’s laboratory is available to
evaluate the compatibility and dosage of
Mapequick AFK 888 with the types of
cement available on site. To optimise the use
of Mapequick AFK 888, please contact the
Underground Technology Team to verify
and perfect the characteristics of the
concrete used, according to local application
conditions.
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER
PRODUCTS
Mapequick AFK 888 is compatible with all
the superplasticisers of the Dynamon and
Mapefluid ranges.
The use of Mapequick AFK 888 with the
pumping aid admixture Mapeplast UTT
reduces the accelerating admixture dosage
and limits the rebound during the shotcrete
applications.
CONSUMPTION
Dosage on weight: from 3 to 8 kg per 100 kg
of cement.
PACKAGING
Mapequick AFK 888 is supplied in 274 kg
drums and 1370 kg tanks. Bulk quantities are
also available upon request.
STORAGE
3 months, stored in closed containers at a
temperature between +5°C and +35°C,
protected from frost and direct sunlight. If the
product has been stocked for a long period, it
is suggested to shake and homogenize it by
using mechanised mixers and/or recirculation
pumps. It is strongly recommended not
to shake the product by means of
compressed air. Please contact our

Team if the product is used after its expiring
date or after freezing.
Even if the product is exposed to long
elevated storage temperature or to rapid
temperature changing, it does not change
its characteristic which remains the same, it
can only assume a different colour, becoming
white. The product cannot be stored in
metallic containers, except those INOX
AISI 316.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR
PREPARATION AND APPLICATION
Mapequick AFK 888 contains aluminium salt
complexes which are hazardous if swallowed
and irritate skin. When in contact with eyes,
it can cause serious damages. Avoid contact
with eyes and skin. If the product comes into
contact with the eyes, rinse immediately and
thoroughly with running water and seek
medical advice. If swallowed, consult a
doctor and show the product safety data
sheet.
Always use suitable protective gloves,
goggles and a protective face mask.
