Standard Method of Test for

Coke Residue of Creosote

AASHTO DESIGNATION: T 61-87

AASHTO T 61-87 is identical to ASTM D 168-86 except for the following provisions.

1. All references to ASTM Standard D 246 contained in ASTM D 168-86 shall be replaced with AASHTO Standard T 62.

2. Replace Section 5.3 of ASTM D 168-86 with the following:

5.3 Furnace-A vertical electric tube furnace1 having an inside diameter of 38 to 80 mm, and inside depth of 125 to 180 mm,
or:

3. Replace Sections 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4 of ASTM D 168-86 with the following:

7.1 Weigh a 1.0 ± 0.1 g portion of the well-stirred residue obtained from the distillation test method in accordance with the
Method of Test for Distillation of Creosote T 62, directly from the distillation flask into the tared crucible. Insert the
cover firmly and weigh. All weighings shall be made to the nearest milligram. If the determination is to be made at a later
time, pour the distillation residue into a tin box with a tight ever. wherein it may be heated in a water or steam bath.

7.2 If the vertical electric tube furnace (Note 1) is used, control the temperature of the furnace by a thermocouple at 950 ±
20°C. The thermocouple shall be sealed in the furnace, and its junction shall be located centrally 2 to 5 mm below the
eventual position at the bottom of the crucible. Suspend the crucible in the elect :-c furnace for exactly 7 minutes, then
remove it, cool to about 150°C, then cool in a desiccator to room temperature and weigh to the nearest milligram.

4. Replace equation in Section 8.1 of ASTM D 168-86 with the following:

Two furnaces have proved satisfactory: (1) The Fieldner, Hoskins Electric Furnace, Type FA-120, with suitable rheostat or variable transformer and pyrometer. When
using this furnace the platinum crucible shall be supported in the crucible holder described under 2.2(2) "Hevi-Duty" Furnace, Type MU-86 725 w, with suitable rheostat
or variable transformer and pyrometer. When using this furnace the platinum crucible shall be located in the center of the furnace, seated in a Nichrome basket suspended
from the cover furnished with the furnace. This furnace should be adjusted to temperature with the cover in place.
