KINGDOM OF PROTISTS

Protists are a complex and diverse group of living organisms. Protists are eukaryotes that are not animals,
land plants or fungi. They are eukaryotic, meaning they are made of complex cells full of organelles doing
specific jobs.

The three types of protists and their characteristics:

1. Plant-Like Protists/Algae
 Have photosynthetic pigments and organs that allow them to capture the sun's energy and make
their own food. This means they are autotrophs
 They are typically red or green in color. And lack of roots, leaves and stems.
 May be either unicellular or multicellular. Unicellular plant-like protists include diatoms. On the
other hand, multicellular plant-like protists include green algae.
2. Animal-Like Protists/Protozoa
 Most protozoa consist of a single cell.
 They are animal-like because they are heterotrophs, and are capable of moving.
 Three types of animal-like protists are paramecium, euglena, and amoebas.
3. Fungus-Like Protists:
 Fungus-like protists are moulds. Moulds are absorptive feeders, found on decaying organic matter.
 They resemble fungi and reproduce with spores as fungi do.
 Examples of fungus-like protists include slime moulds and water moulds
