Activity # 3
Measures of Dispersion/Variation

Tasks:
1. Explain briefly the measures of dispersion particularly the Variance and Standard Deviation. Surf over
the internet two research studies that utilize standard deviation, show the table if possible and copy
paste the URL reference. (5 points)
- The measure of dispersion specifies the distribution of data. It presents the difference of each data,
bringing an exact view of the distribution of data. The measure of dispersion shows and gives us
knowledge about the variation and central value of different items. Variance is the average squared
difference of scores from the mean score of a distribution. While the standard deviation is merely the
square root of the variance. In some sense, taking the square root of the variance "unties" the squaring of
the differences that we did when we calculated the variance. - “Effect of Study Circle on Moral Attitudes

2. The following is a hypothetical data on the performance of students exposed to three differentiated
activities in a 30-point summative test in Science.

Differentiated Activities
A B C
28 29 17
23 25 29
28 24 28
29 27 28
27 28 15
18 29 18
17 24 25
23 14 28
25 16 29
20 29 30
20 28 29

a. Complete the table by calculating the measures in each differentiated activity below: (15
points)

A B C
Mean 23.67 24.82 24.00
Range 12 15 20
Average Deviation 3.50 3.87 5.54
Variance 13.51 27.36 43.83
Standard Deviation 3.68 5.23 6.62
b. What do you notice about the means of the three groups? (2 points)
- The means in the three groups are very much alike, where it plays in the value of 24.
Groups B and C share the same value of 24. While group A is 23.67 that can be rounded
off to 24.00.
c. Do you have the same standard deviation of the differentiated activities? Compare and
analyze the SDs? (3 points)
- The standard deviation derived from my answer is distinct in every group. The group with
the highest standard deviation is group C represented by 6.62, while the lowest standard
deviation is 3.68 under group A. Garnering the standard deviation of 5.23 belongs to
group B that sits in the middle of every group in determining the standard deviation.

3. If you are given the chance to select your students for your class, which do you prefer to teach a
homogenous or heterogeneous class? (5 points)
- If I were given a chance to select students to teach, I would prefer a heterogeneous class.
Why? Simply because I want to challenge myself in handling various kinds of students. I
want to discover the multiple intelligences of students. I want to enhance those skills for
the students to strive well. I want to motivate and help strive the struggling students by
inspiring them in class. It would also make me as a teacher grow in my teaching
profession and as a person because you will be forced to look for and apply different
teaching strategies and techniques which are effective for the students to learn and
perform well. Teaching a heterogenous class will help me
4. Calculate the standard deviation of the given data below and interpret the result. (10 points) The ages
of the faculty in a certain University

Age f
56 – 62
49 – 55
42 – 48
35 – 41
28 – 34
21 - 27

Age f m fm 𝑥̅ 𝑚−𝑥̅ (𝑚−𝑥̅)2

56-62 3 59 177 40.79 18.51 342.62
49-55 11 52 572 40.79 11.21 125.66
42-48 40 45 1800 40.79 4.21 17.72
35-41 25 38 950 40.79 -2.79 7.78
28-34 18 31 558 40.79 -9.79 95.84
21-27 6 24 144 40.79 -16.79 281.90

𝑆 = 8.12
Interpretation:
- The table about the ages of the faculty in a certain University shows that the midpoint of
ages in the university is 45 years old. While the average age is presented by the mean
with the values of 40.79 or to be rounded off to 41 years old. The table also presents what
age bracket is dominating in the university, this is represented by the bracket 42-48
having the frequency of 40 members of the faculty. The grand total of the standard
deviation is 8.12.
