Measures of Central Tendency
(Grouped Data)
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module on Measure of Central

Tendency for Grouped Data!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module on Measure of Central

Tendency for Grouped Data!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

5. 10.2, 18.5, 17.6, 12.3, 15.9, 16.3
LESSON

On the previous module, you learned how to find the mean, median and
mode of ungrouped data. Can you still find the mean, median and mode if the data
is large or if the data is presented in a frequency distribution table?

The data shows the ages of first 55 confirmed Covid-19 Cases Tested in the
Philippines. Find the mean, median and mode of the distribution.

Ages of Covid-19 Patient Frequency

70 - 79 7
60 - 69 11
50 - 59 12
40 - 49 9
30 - 39 8
20 - 29 5

Mean of Grouped Data

To solve for the mean of grouped data, use the formula:
∑ 𝑓𝑋
𝑋̅ =
𝑁
where: 𝑋̅ is the mean, ∑ 𝑓𝑋 is the sum of the products of the frequency and its
corresponding class mark, and N is the total frequency.

Class mark is the mid value of the class interval. It can be solved by adding the
lower class limit and upper class limit and divided by 2.

Ages of Frequency Class fX

Covid-19 Mark (X)

80 - 89 3 84.5 253.5
70 - 79 7 74.5 521.5
60 - 69 11 64.5 709.5
50 - 59 12 54.5 654
40 - 49 9 44.5 400.5
30 - 39 8 34.5 276
20 - 29 5 24.5 122.5
i=10 N=55 ∑ 𝑓𝑋 = 2937.5
Solution:
∑ 𝑓𝑋
𝑋̅ =
𝑁
2937.5
=
55

𝑋̅ =53.41

The mean is 53.41

Median of Grouped Data

To solve for the median of grouped data, use the formula:
𝑁
−< 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑋̃ = 𝐿𝐵𝑚 + ( 2 )𝑖
𝑓𝑚

Where: 𝑋̃= median, 𝐿𝐵𝑚 is the lower boundary of the median class, < 𝑐𝑓𝑏 is the
cumulative frequency immediately below/lower than the median class, 𝑓𝑚 is the
frequency of the median class, and 𝑖 is the class size.

30 - 39 8 29.5 13
20 - 29 5 19.5 5
i=10 N=55

Solution:
Add two columns for lower boundary and less than cumulative frequency.

To get the lower boundary, subtract 0.5 from the lower limit score of each class
interval. In class interval 80-89: 80 – 0.5 = 79.5
To get the less than cumulative frequency, start with the frequency of the lowest
class interval, then add the frequency of the next higher class interval.
𝑁 55
Locate the median class: =
2 2
𝑁
= 27.5
2
Choose the class interval where 27.5 is contained by looking at the less than
cumulative frequency. Since the 23rd-34th scores belong to the class interval 50-59,
then the 27.5th score is also within the said class interval.
LB = 49.5
< 𝑐𝑓𝑏 = 22
𝑓𝑚 =12
i =10
𝑁
−<𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑋̃ = 𝐿𝐵 + ( 2 )𝑖

27.5−22
= 49.5 + ( ) 10
12

= 49.5 + (0.4583)10

= 49.5 + (4.583)

𝑋̃ = 54.083 or 54.08

The median is 54.08

Mode of Grouped Data

To solve for the mode of grouped data, use the formula:

𝑑1
𝑋̂ = 𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑜 + ( )𝑖
𝑑1 + 𝑑2

where: 𝑋̂ is the mode, 𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑜 is the lower boundary of the modal class, 𝑑1 is the
difference between the frequencies of the modal class and the next lower class, 𝑑2 is
the difference between the frequencies of the modal class and the next upper class,
and 𝑖 is the class size.

40 - 49 9 39.5
30 - 39 8 29.5
20 - 29 5 19.5
i=10 N=55

Solution:
The class interval 50 – 59 is the modal class because it has the greatest
number of frequencies.

𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑜 = 49.5
𝑑1 = 12 – 9 = 3
𝑑2 = 12 – 11 = 1

𝑖 = 10
𝑑1
𝑋̂ = 𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑜 + ( )𝑖
𝑑1 +𝑑2

3

3+1

= 49.5 + (0.75)10
= 49.5 + 7.5

𝑋̂ = 57
The mode is 57.

The Covid 19 outbreak brought a deep impact in our lives. During this
pandemic, we were given a chance to spend time with our family. We can consider
our family the center of our lives. They give us motivation and strength to face the
challenges brought by this pandemic. And above all, God, the source of our
spiritual strength and hope that this pandemic will someday put to an end.
