Linear Video Editing

Linear video editing is a video editing post-production process of selecting,

arranging and modifying images and sound in a predetermined, ordered
sequence. Regardless of whether it was captured by a video camera, tapeless
camcorder, or recorded in a television studio on a video tape recorder (VTR) the
content must be accessed sequentially. For the most part video editing software
has replaced linear editing. In the past, film editing was done in linear fashion,
where film reels were literally cut into long strips divided by takes and scenes, and
then glued or taped back together to create a logical sequence of film. Linear
video editing is more time consuming and highly specialized and tedious work.
Some of the equipment used in linear video editing (Tape to Tape) are:
1.Two VCRs (video tape machines), preferably with AV (audio and video) outputs.

At least one video monitor, but preferably two. …
Connecting cables.
The tapes(s) you wish to edit and a blank tape to edit onto (this will become the
master tape).

And some of the functions of Linear Video Editing are:

1. It is used to add new videos into the current video footage
2. To remove the unwanted shots from the video footage.
Non- Linear Video Editing

Non-linear editing is a form of offline editing for audio, video, and image editing.
In offline editing, the original content is not modified in the course of editing. In
non-linear editing, edits are specified and modified by specialized software. A
pointer-based playlist, effectively an edit decision list (EDL), for video and audio,
or a directed acyclic graph for still images, is used to keep track of edits. Each time
the edited audio, video, or image is rendered, played back, or accessed, it is
reconstructed from the original source and the specified editing steps. Although
this process is more computationally intensive than directly modifying the original
content, changing the edits themselves can be almost instantaneous, and it
prevents further generation loss as the audio, video, or image is edited.

Some of the equipment required for non-linear video editing are:-

1.A camera ( to record the video footage).
2.A computer system ( required to run the editing software).
3. Editing Software (such as Premier pro in which actual editing will take place).

Some of the functions of Non-Linear Video Editing are:-

1. It is used to add transitions to the video.
2. It is used to add special effects to the video.
3. It is also used to apply cuts and add music to the video.
