General Instructions:

1. The holiday homework should be done neatly.

2. Part A and Part B of holiday homework should be done individually.
3. The holiday homework should be brought to the school on the day the school reopens.
4. Part A is an assignment based on chapters completed. It is to be done in the science
register.
5. Part B is a research work on which either a word document or a power point presentation
can be made. Use of pictures, flowcharts and graphs is compulsory as a supporting
document.
6. One case study is to be mandatorily chosen from the topics given for research work. Part A

Complete the following assignment based on chapters: a) Chemical

b) Acids, Bases and Salts
c) Life Processes
d) Electricity

1. What happens to idli dough when it is kept at room temperature on a summer day?
2. People living in coastal areas use plastic articles than iron articles for their day to day activities.
Why?
3. Under what soil condition do you think a farmer would treat the soil of his field with quicklime,
slaked lime or chalk?
4. Define the SI unit of:
(a) Current (b) Potential Difference (c) Resistance
(d) Electric Power (e) Electric Energy (Commercial)
5. On what factors does the resistance of a conductor depends?
6. How are the voltmeter and ammeter connected in an electric circuit?
7. A colourless compound ‘X’ obtained from sea water which is used in daily meals is taken in a
test tube. Conc.H2SO4 was added to the test tube, a pungent smelling gas ‘Y’ comes out -which
does not affect dry blue litmus paper but turns moist blue litmus paper red.
Identify ‘X’ and ‘Y’.

8. The process by which blood is cleared of metabolic wastes in case of kidney failure is
called
(a) artificial kidney b) dialysis
c) transplantation d) filtration

9. A chemical reaction does not involve:

(a) Formation of new substances having entirely different properties than that of the
reactants
(b) Breaking of old chemical bonds and formation of new chemical bonds
(c) Rearrangement of the atoms of reactants to form new products
(d) Changing of the atoms of on element into those of another element to form new
products
10. Baking soda is a mixture of :
(a) Sodium carbonate and acetic acid
(b) Sodium carbonate and tartaric acid
(c) Sodium hydrogen carbonate and tartaric acid
(d) Sodium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid
11. At the time of short circuit, the electric current in the circuit:
(a) vary continuously (b) does not change
(c) reduces substantially (d) increases heavily

12. Two bulbs of 100 W and 40 W are connected in series. The current through the 100 W bulb is 1
A. The current through the 40 W bulb will be:
(a) 0.4 A (b) 0.6 A
(c) 0.8 A (d) 1 A

13. Write the equation for the process of breakdown of glucose in a cell (i) in the presence of
oxygen (ii) in the absence of oxygen.
14. An aqueous solution of metal nitrate ‘X’ reacts with Sodium bromide solution to form yellow
precipitate of compound ‘Y’ which is used in photography. ‘Y’ on exposure to sunlight,
undergoes decomposition reaction to form metal present in ‘X’ along with gas. Identify ‘X’ and
‘Y’. Write the chemical reaction and identify the type of reaction.
15. List the important products of the Chlor-alkali process. Write one important use of each.
16. How is washing soda prepared from sodium carbonate? Give its chemical equation. State the
type of this salt. Name the type of hardness of water which can be removed by it?
17. Draw a well diagram of nephron. Explain the mechanism of urine formation in man.
18. Why are coils of electric toasters and electric irons made of an alloy rather than a pure metal?
19. An electric motor takes 5 A from a 220 V line. Determine the power of the motor and energy
consumed in 2h.
20. How many 176 Ω resistors (in parallel) are required to carry 5A on a 220 V line?
21. Three resistance of 2 Ω, 3 Ω and 5 Ω are connected in the electric circuit. Calculate the (a)
Maximum effective resistance (b) Minimum effective resistance.
22. Explain Joule’s law of heating? How and on what factors does the heat produced in a conductor
depends?
23. Show how you would connect three resistors, each of resistance 6 Ω so that the combination
has resistance of (i) 9Ω (ii) 4Ω.
24. Draw a diagram showing Human Respiratory system.
Label the following parts (i) Larynx (ii) Trachea (iii) Bronchus (iv) Lungs

25. The following two questions consists of two statements-Assertion (A) and Reason(R), answer
these questions selecting the appropriate option given below
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation for A
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation for A
(c) A is true but R is false
(d) A is false but R is true

Now answer the following:

(i) Assertion (A): Aerobic respiration requires less energy as compared to anaerobic
respiration.
Reason(R): Mitochondria is the power house of the cell.

(ii) Assertion: Wire A is thin in comparison to wire B of made up of same material and
same length then resistance of wire A is greater than resistance of wire B.
Reason: Resistivity of wire A is greater than resistance of wire B.

(iii) Assertion: When a resistance wire is stretched so as to make its length double, its
resistance becomes 4 times of its original value.
Reason: Resistance of a conductor is directly proportional to its length and inversely
proportional to its cross-section area.

(iv) Assertion: A fuse wire is always connected in parallel with the mainline.
Reason: If a current larger than the specified value flows through the circuit, fuse
wire melts.
