Presentation on :
Common Chemical Laboratory Apparatus
Dr. Thamina Acter
Assistant Professor ,Chemistry
Safety Equipment : Safety equipment is important for doing laboratory experiments. Safety
equipment are goggles, hand gloves, mask, ppe, apron etc. If we work in a laboratory for
experiment with toxic chemicals we have to wear safety goggles and respiratory masks and
we must wear apron and hand gloves for experiment.
Beakers : Beakers are used for transfer chemicals ,heating chemicals and mix solutions.
Beakers are commonly made of glass (today usually borosilicate glass), but can also be in
metal (such as stainless steel or aluminum) or certain plastics (notably polythene,
polypropylene, PTFE). A common use for polypropylene beakers is gamma spectral analysis
of liquid and solid samples. Beakers shape is like a mug without handle and because of its
shape, chemical can be transferred ,mix and heat easily.
Test tubes : Test tubes intended for general chemical work are usually made of glass, for its
relative resistance to heat. Tubes made from expansion-resistant glasses, mostly borosilicate
glass or fused quartz, can withstand high temperatures up to several hundred degrees
Celsius.
Chemistry tubes are available in a multitude of lengths and widths, typically from 10 to 20
mm wide and 50 to 200 mm long The top often features a flared lip to aid pouring out the
contents. Test tube is also used for collecting small amounts of samples. It used for heat
chemicals.
Burette : Burette is used for adding exact volume of liquid and also used for adding accurate
measurement. A burette is a graduated glass tube with a tap at one end, for delivering
known volumes of a liquid, especially in titrations. It is a long, graduated glass tube, with
a stopcock at its lower end and a tapered capillary tube at the stopcock's outlet. The flow
of liquid from the tube to the burette tip is controlled by the stopcock valve. There are two
main types of burette; the volumetric burette and the Piston burette or Digital burette.
Bunsen Burner : A Bunsen burner, named after Robert Bunsen, is a kind of gas burner
used as laboratory equipment; it produces a single open gas flame, and is used for heating,
sterilization, and combustion.
The gas can be natural gas (which is mainly methane) or a liquefied petroleum gas, such as
propane, butane, or a mixture. Combustion temperature achieved depends in part on the
adiabatic flame temperature of the chosen fuel mixture.
Conclusion : There are many laboratory apparatus used for many experiments and these
apparatus are very important for doing experiments. But these experiments should be
done carefully and before the experiment everyone should know the uses of this
apparatus.
