CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.2. Satment of the Problem

It was stated that the work aims to analyze the protagonis. The

Heartstopper graphic novel problem analyzed in the study is formulated as :

1. How does psychological disorder depicted in Heartstopper?

2. How does the protagonist deal with his psychological disorder in

Heartstopper?

1.3. Scope and Limitation of the Studdy

The scope of his research focuses on literature related to the analysis of

novel by professional theory. A limitation of this study, however, lies in the

psychoanalytic work that focusses his research on the psychological disorder

contained in the novel.

1.4. Objectives of the Study

Indicating to the formulation of the problem, the reasech objectives are as

follows :

1. To describe the psychological disorder of the protagonist in Heartstopper.


2. To analyze the psychological disorder construction of the protagonist in

Heartstopper.

1.5. Functions of the Study

1. Pratically, this research can be used as a reference for other studetns

discussing or implementing in their research or learning with a similar topic.

2. Theoretically, the function of this study can help us understand how a

person’s behavior when they experience psychological disorder, this is the

problem that exist in the protagonist in the novel Heartsopper by Charlie Spring

and Nicholas Nelson.

1.6. Systematical Presentation

This study is divided into five chapters, each containing a different

discussion.

Chapter 1 is an introduction that contains the research background of the

study, statments of the problem, scope and limitation of the study, objectives of

the study, functions of the study, and systematical presentation. In this chapter,

formal and the essential purpose of this study is related to the question posed

analyzed.
Chapter II that consist of related studies, a review of the literature and

theoretical framework. On this chapter also shows the similarities and differences

between this study. Usually in this section is a research framework that focuses on

research topics as well as an analysis of previous writing by the experts.

Chapter III is the research methodology, which consists of the research

content, data sources, data collection, and data method analysis approach. This

chapter explain data sources and methods.

Chapter IV covers searching and analyzing data. The authors note the

results of ths study, which uses theory to analyze or explain the results of thinking

based on the theory of Sigmund Freud, the first founder of Psychoanalytic Theori,

also Carl Gustav Jung and Alfred Alder, Who coind the names “Analytical

Psychology” and “Individual Psychology”.


CHAPTER II

RELATED STUDIES, REVIEW OF LITERATURE, THEORETICAL

FRAMEWORK

2.1. Related Studies

This study has several related studies that used psychoanalistic approaches to

identify the protagonist. Therfore, the subject of this study is a novel titled

Heartstopper, and this study has a similar perspective on the following cited

studies.

The first related study was a journal by Baeley J. Michael and Zucker

Kenneth J. (1995) from Department of Psychology, Norwestern University with

their journal “Childhood Sex-Typed Behavior and Sexual Orientation : A

Conceptual Analysis and Quantitative Review” In the following aticle, this is a

study on childhood and sexual sex-type behavior. This phenomenon can occur due

to various factors that can influence it, such as the surrounding environment or

upbringing given by parents, as well as genes or heredity. The following journal

includes variuos studies related to it LGBT including psychology, sociology,

cultural studies, and health. This journal used quantitative methods are used in

research to collect, analyze and interpret data numerically, then approach uses

measurement tools and statistical techniques to collect data that can be objectively
measured and quantified, where this method uses a research and experimental

approach to groups.

The second related study was a journal by Elga Andina from Universitas

Indonesia Pusat Penelitian Badan Keahlian DPR RI whit her journal namely

“Psychosocial Factors Interacting With LGBT Movement in Indonesia” this

following journal using Psychoanaltic theory that was coined by Freud as a result

of the Oedipus conflict, the condition when there is a boy’s attraction to his

mother emotionally and sexually. In this paper also discuss how people

experience rejection and oppression that occurs in every country, one of which is

Indonesia, where the country is a religious figure and some people ask that LGBT

be rejected because it is not by Islamic religious teachings. Beside that, Human

Rights Campaigner and Feminist emphasized not to discriminate againts LGBT

groups. But until now, the government has not had any efforts to regulate the

existence of LGBT people, because the in some areas it prohibits LGBT, while in

other areas it is permissible to have it.

2.2. Review of Literature

A literature review is an evaluation review of various topics originating

from several scientific sources on a particular topic which will provide an

overview of knowladge, and can identify theories and methods in existing

research, which can later be applied to opinions and argumens.
