SERV1975 - 07/13 -2- Module 2 - Monitoring System
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will meet the following learning outcomes during
this Monitoring System module of the 988K Wheel Loader,
834K Wheel Dozer, and 836K Landfill Compactor course:
• Locate and identify all information displayed by the gauges,
indication display, and information display during a classroom
exercise.
• Access the operational menus and interpret the information
displayed by the gauges, indication display, and information display
during a lab exercise.
• Explain the function and operation of each component in the 988K
Wheel Loader, 834K Wheel Dozer, or 836K Landfill Compactor
monitoring system during a Post-Assessment.
Pre-module Learning Outcomes Participants will meet the following learning outcomes during this Monitoring System
(objectives): module of the 988K Wheel Loader, 834K Wheel Dozer, and 836K Landfill Compactor
course:
• This slide and statement for the
988K Wheel Loader/834K Wheel • Given the necessary documentation for a 988K Wheel Loader, 834K
Dozer/836K Landfill Compactor Wheel Dozer, or 836K Landfill Compactor and the Lab 1 Worksheet,

• Identify the indicator display The 988K,834K and 836K are equipped with the Indicator Display and Information
and information display Display as the machine monitors. The Information Display receives machine status
communication on machines with data from the Transmission ECM, the Implement ECM, and the Engine ECM, and
a Tier 4 Final engine. displays the machine status on the Indicator Display panel. The Vital Information
Management System (VIMS) main module also receives information from the
Engine and Machine ECMs and stores it for diagnostic purposes and off-board
analysis.
The Indicator Display shows the operator status of the various machine parameters
and alerts the operator of specific machine conditions. The display sends output
signals to the Action Lamp and the Action Alarm.
The ECMs and Information Display panel communicate over the Cat Data Link
and the CAN A Data Link . The Information Display panel communicates with the
Indicator Display over the CAN A Data Link. The cab keypad communicates with
the Power Train ECM and the Implement ECM over the CAN B Data Link. The
VIMS Main Module receives information from machine switches and sensors via the
Machine ECMs.

and an Action Alarm are used in different combinations to signal the operator. The
four warning category indicators are:
• Level 1 Warning: The Action Lamp will illuminate to solid red. The
warning can be acknowledged (snoozed) by pressing the OK button,
and will not reappear for several hours, depending on the failure or
event (or if the event or failure does not reoccur).
• Level 2 Warning: The Action Lamp will flash red, alerting the
operator to change the machine operation mode. The warning can
be acknowledged (snoozed) by pressing the OK button, and will not
reappear for one hour, depending on the event or failure (or if the event
or failure does not reoccur); pressing the OK button will also stop the
light from flashing.
