ITEM : O.12. ELEMENTARY SOCIAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM

Rationale
TCI TEXTBOOKS AND WORKBOOKS: 
Temecula Valley Unified School District (TVUSD) Board Policy and Administrative Regulation
6141 delineates a process for evaluating textbooks. Teachers representing all elementary sites
across the District and at all appropriate grade levels met to review the District Curriculum Guide
and State Standards and to review instructional materials and evaluate against quality criteria.
The recommended instructional materials must be placed on public display at the district office
and all elementary sites before being submitted to the Governing Board for adoption. 

The Social Science Program, Social Studies Alive ©2018 Grades 1-5, published by: Teachers’
Curriculum Institute, is being considered for an 8-year adoption cycle from the 2023-2024 school
year through the 2030-2031 school year. This curriculum is one of the four State Board of
Education adopted materials for History/Social Studies.

CURRENT SOCIAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM: 

It has been suggested that we explore keeping our current curriculum, Scott Foresman, copyright
2006. This gives teachers a resource to use in their classrooms on an interim basis. We have
some workbooks available, and additional materials will need to be ordered.

CALIFORNIA STUDIES WEEKLY:

adopted materials for History/Social Studies.

TCI TEXTBOOKS AND WORKBOOKS: 
A Social Science Pilot team consisting of 47 teachers from all grades, at all sites, came to a
consensus of adopting  TCI Social Studies Alive 1st-5th grade for an eight-year adoption. TCI
Social Studies Alive 1st-5th will be the primary History instructional material for elementary
students.

All parents were invited to review materials at the District Office in March and at all elementary
sites in April. Information about the programs was also posted online on the TVUSD website and
the Community Connection Newsletter.

Since May 2023, two subcommittees have been formed and met to discuss the adoption process
and promotion of parent engagement. Two Community Forum Nights were also hosted, via Zoom,
to provide parents with additional access to the curriculum. 

CURRENT SOCIAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM: 

This is a short-term resolution for TVUSD K-5 for the 2023-2024 school year. It is important to
note that this current curriculum, purchased in 2006,  does not meet the History-Social Science
Framework (2016), ELA/ELD Framework (2014), or the Fair Education Act (2013).

being presented to the TVUSD School Board for approval.
Financial Impact
TCI TEXTBOOKS AND WORKBOOKS: 
TCI Social Studies Alive grades 1-5: The total cost of this Social Science program is
$1,601,723.41 for an 8-year adoption. We would purchase the program in its entirety but not
provide online resources to students via Clever at this time.

CURRENT SOCIAL SCIENCE CURRICULUM: 

$162,000.00 for the 23-24 school year. This cost will rise in subsequent school years.

California Studies Weekly Kindergarten: The total cost of this Social Science program is
$142,588.00 for an 8-year adoption.
