 The Summer Programme is aimed at introducing students to the key concepts


and doctrines of international law and international human rights as well as
its more specific application to the human rights associated with the right to
health and access to medicine.
 The Summer school will examine in detail the issue of access to medicine
specifically from the perspective of intellectual property rights.

Completion Certificates: Each student successfully completing Brunel Law


School, The Human Rights Policy: Summer School (2023) will be awarded a certificate
from the Brunel Law School.

Get to know your Summer School Tutors

Dr Olga Gurgula is a Senior Lecturer in IP law and Director


of International and External Partnerships at Brunel
University London. She holds LLM and PhD from QMUL.
Olga has served as an expert consultant for international
organisations, governments and nongovernmental
organisations, mainly in the field of IP and access to
medicines. She is the author of many articles, including on
IP and public health, strategic patenting by pharma
companies, and compulsory licensing of trade secrets to
enhance access to COVID-19 vaccines. Olga qualified as a
Ukrainian attorney in 2004. Before the commencement of
her PhD research in 2013, she worked in private practice
in Ukraine for over ten years.

Dr Javaid Rehman is a Professor of Law at Brunel


University London.  He was formerly a Professor of Law at
the Transitional Justice Institute, Ulster University (2002 -
2005) and lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the Law School
University of Leeds (1996 - 2002). Professor Rehman is the
former Head of Brunel Law School (2009 - 2013), Senior
Manager, Member of Brunel Senate (2009 - 2013) and the
founding Director of the Centre for Security, Media and
Human Rights, interdisciplinary Brunel University Research
Centre (2008 - 2015).  In July 2018, Professor Rehman was
appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council as
the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human
Rights Situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Between
2019-2021, he acted as a member of the Coordination
Committee of the Special Procedures United Nations
Human Rights Office.
