Assignment Brief and Guidance

Scenario
The control system that is used in industry is now a major control system that is used
nowadays in modern industries. Industrial control system has a vital role in an industrial
development. Now everything in the world is implementing automatic instead of manual
operation. As an electrical and electronic engineer, you always encounter equations,
problems and data that need to be controlled and analyzed in order to understand the results
in a practical way. From your theoretical experiences, you must analyze the research
carefully using methodologies that you have learnt in Industrial Systems. Figure 1 shows the
basic components of a control system as a reference for your report and it must be clear and
prepared in a professional way as this will have a major impact on how the results are
accepted from knowledge in the job that you are doing. All the tasks must be finalized on time
and the analysis must be thorough and convincing.

Task 1: Control System Elements

Based on the scenario above, write a report on the task that you have completed according to
the guideline below.

1. Describe THREE (3) types of industrial control system and their major elements in
each system. Include diagrams and main configurations of each type.

2. Review electronically controlled industrial system concepts that function due to the
open loop system and closed loop system based on the following questions:

(i) List TWO (2) examples of discrete input and discrete output available in control
system.
(ii) Explain Open Loop and Closed Loop System with the major features and
advantages in it. Include diagrams.
(iii) List TWO (2) applications from both systems.

3. Analyze THREE (3) characteristics and the main methods of controlling speed of DC
motors in industrial sectors with advantages and limitations of these methods. (You
must include in your answers diagrams that explain the methodology used)

4. With the methods listed from Question 3, choose ONE (1) controlling methodology
used in practices while critically examining the performance and suggest further
improvements of the main currently used methods.

Task 2: Electronic, Electrical and Mechanical Transducers and Controllers

1. Evaluate the importance of an electronic, electrical, and mechanical transducer and

controller and their interface.
(i) Explain the function of transducers and transductions process.
(ii) Identify and explain THREE (3) types of transducers in control system with
their major configurations.

2. In linear robotic motion, provide justifications for TWO (2) of the importance of
transducers and controllers that can be applied based on the list below.
(i) Linear Motion
(ii) Linear Displacement

3. Then, based on Question 2, predict the behavior of the robotic motion by applying
TWO (2) different common types of transducers, sensors, or actuators. Justify
which are the most vital one to use in robotic motion.

4. PID Controller is widely used 95% in industrial processes. PID stands for Proportional
Integral and Derivative Controller. All three parameters are proportional, integral, and
derivative, where it combines to form a PID controller to produce a signal. Based on
this statement, critically evaluate the behavior of a given system, explain.

(i) Working of a PID controller

(ii) P Controller
(iii) PI Controller
(iv) PID Controller
