was used to tow aircraft out onto the

whirlwind of activity to identify potential
new airfields for US aircraft at sites in the
east and southeast of England.
When these locations were approved
by the Air Ministry, the contractual use of
the land was negotiated or compulsorily
purchased. Then construction work
started. Grass runway strips were
gradually replaced by a/I-weather concrete
runways. Control towers, aircraft hangers,
accommodation blocks, briefing rooms,
storerooms, repair workshops, toilets and
bomb shelters soon sprouted up around the
runways.
While the RAF conducted night-time
bombing of Germany and military targets
in occupied Europe, the USAAF bombers
concentrated on daylight bombing. Cletrac
Medium M2 tractors were shipped over to
England to be used on these new airfields.

Compared to the traditional 'clutch and

crawlers of this vintage, the Cletrac
differential has the disadvantage that it is
not possible to lock one track and spot
turn around the braked track. Instead,
the minimum turning radius is 10.Sft

bulldozers, the controlled differential did
prevent the Cletrac Medium M2 tractor's

keeping the surface smooth for aircraft

The driver uses two tillers to steer the

Gary, from Carlisle in Cumbria, received
a grant and the award from the patron
of the National Transport Trust, Anne,
Princess Royal at a ceremony held on
October 20 last year.
Gary is in the process of restoring an
Otter armoured car. Built as a Canadian
stopgap armoured car to replace lost
equipment at Dunkirk, the Otters were
made in small numbers but ended up
serving throughout the war in most
theatres right up to the end of the
hostilities
Not many are left with only three in the
UK including this one and the one in the
Hendon RAF Museum.
Work on the armoured body is almost
finished with the doors, hatches external
bonnets and front grille made. The next
steps are for the chassis and transmission
to be completely stripped, rebuilt and
replaced.
