The terminology of "global city",


Global City? as opposed to megacity, is
thought to have been first coined
by Saskia Sassen in reference to
London, New York and Tokyo in
her 1991 work The Global City.
They are places with many
important functions in the global
flow of capital. They are also
known as global cities and are
major drivers of globalization.
Saskia Sassen is the author
of the book The Global
City.

She is a Dutch sociologist,


writer and teacher, winner of
the 2013 Prince of Asturias
Prize in Social Sciences .

Classifying Global Cities

The much better-known GaWC study (1999) from


Loughborough University used its own methodology that
defined the criteria for considering a city worldwide.

Their results were classified into three types of cities:

Alpha - 12 to 10 points.
Beta - 9 to 7 points.
Gamma - 6 to 4 points.

is a think tank that studies the relationships
between world cities in the context of
globalization.
It is based in the geography department of
Loughborough University in Leicestershire,
United Kingdom. GaWC was founded by Peter J.
Taylor in 1998.
