Trọng âm của từ có hai âm tiết

Quy tắc 1: Phần lớn danh từ và tính từ trong tiếng Anh có hai âm tiết thì trọng âm thường
rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất

Ví dụ: 

 Danh từ: monkey /´mʌηki/, baby /’beibi/, center /ˈsentər/,…

Một số trường hợp ngoại lệ của danh từ: advice /ədˈvaɪs/, machine /məˈʃiːn/, mistake /mɪ
ˈsteɪk/, hotel /həʊˈtel/,…

Chú ý: Một số từ 2 âm tiết sẽ có trọng âm khác nhau tùy thuộc vào từ loại.
Như record, desert sẽ có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất nếu là danh từ: record /ˈrek.ɔːd/;
desert /ˈdez.ət/; rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2 khi là động từ: record /rɪˈkɔːd/; desert /dɪˈzɜːt/,…

 Tính từ: angry /´æηgri/, happy/ ˈhæpi/, nervous /ˈnɜrvəs/,…

Một số trường hợp ngoại lệ của tính từ: alone /əˈləʊn/, amazed /əˈmeɪzd/,…
Quy tắc 2: Một số động từ cũng có trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất nếu có âm tiết thứ hai
là âm ngắn

Quy tắc 3: Hầu hết động từ và giới từ có hai âm tiết thì nhấn âm sẽ rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai

Ví dụ:

 Động từ: design /di´zain/, enjoy /ɪnˈdʒɔɪ/, include /ɪnˈkluːd/…

 Giới từ: between /bɪˈtwiːn/, among /əˈmʌŋ/…
 Một số trường hợp ngoại lệ: answer /ˈɑːn.sər/, enter /ˈen.tər/, happen /ˈhæp.ən/,
offer /ˈɒf.ər/, open /ˈəʊ.pən/, visit /ˈvɪz.ɪt/,…

Quy tắc 4: Danh từ hay tính từ chứa nguyên âm dài ở âm tiết thứ hai thì nhấn trọng âm sẽ
rơi vào chính âm tiết đó

Ví dụ: belief /bɪˈliːf/, Japan /dʒəˈpæn/, correct /kəˈrekt/, perfume /pərˈfjuːm/, police /pəˈliːs/ …
Quy tắc 5: Các từ chỉ số luợng nhấn trọng âm ở từ cuối kết thúc bằng đuôi – teen. Ngược
lại sẽ nhấn trọng âm ở từ đầu tiên nếu kết thúc bằng đuôi – y

Ví dụ: thirteen /θɜːˈtiːn/, fourteen /ˌfɔːˈtiːn/, twenty /ˈtwen.ti/, thirty /ˈθɜː.ti/, fifty /ˈfɪf.ti/,…
Trọng âm của từ có ba âm tiết trở lên 
Quy tắc 6: Danh từ có ba âm tiết, nếu âm tiết thứ hai có chứa âm /ə/ hoặc /i/ thì trọng âm sẽ
rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất

 Ví dụ: exercise /’eksəsaiz/, paradise /ˈpærədaɪs /, compromise/’kɑmprə,maɪz/…

Quy tắc 7: Danh từ, động từ, tính từ khi có âm tiết cuối là âm /ə/ hoặc /i/ và kết thúc là phụ
âm thì trọng âm rơi vào âm thứ hai

 Ví dụ: consider /kənˈsɪdər/, remember /rɪˈmembər/, familiar /fəˈmɪliər/,…

Trọng âm của từ có tiền tố và hậu tố

Quy tắc 8: Các từ có hậu tố là – ic, – ish, – ical, – sion, – tion, – ance, – ence, – idle, – ious, –
iar, – ience, – id, – eous, – ian, – ity thì thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết ngay trước

Ví dụ: nation /ˈneɪʃn/, celebrity /səˈlebrəti/, linguistic /lɪŋˈɡwɪstɪk/, foolish /ˈfuːlɪʃ/, entrance
/ˈentrəns/, musician /mjuˈzɪʃn/,…
Quy tắc 9: Các từ có hậu tố là – ee, – eer, – ese, – ique, – esque , – ain sẽ có trọng âm rơi vào
chính âm tiết đó

Ví dụ: agree /əˈɡriː/, maintain /meɪnˈteɪn/, Vietnamese /ˌvjetnəˈmiːz/, maintain /meɪnˈteɪn/,

volunteer /ˌvɑːlənˈtɪr/unique /juˈniːk/, retain /rɪˈteɪn/…
Quy tắc 10: Các từ có hậu tố là – ment, – ship, – ness, – er/ or, – hood, – ing, – en, – ful, –
able, – ous, – less thì trọng âm chính của từ gốc không thay đổi. 

Ví dụ: agreement /əˈɡriːmənt/, meaningless /ˈmiːnɪŋləs/, reliable /rɪˈlaɪəbl/, poisonous  

/ˈpɔɪzənəs/, happiness /ˈhæpinəs/,…
Quy tắc 11: Các từ có hậu tố là – al, – ate, – gy, – cy, – ity, – phy, – graphy thì trọng âm rơi
vào âm tiết thứ 3 từ dưới lên

Ví dụ: economical /ˌiːkəˈnɑːmɪkl/, investigate /ɪnˈvestɪɡeɪt/, photography /fəˈtɑːɡrəfi/,

identity /aɪˈdɛntɪti/, technology /tekˈnɑːlədʒi/, geography /dʒiˈɑːɡrəfi/.
Quy tắc 12: Các từ kết thúc bằng các đuôi : how, what, where, …. thì trọng âm chính nhấn
vào âm tiết thứ nhất
