What Is It

The Philippine National Standard (PNS) and Bureau of Agriculture

and Fisheries Standards 184:2016 (Code of Good Animal Husbandry
Practices for Chickens – Broilers and Layers) is one of the governing body
which sets the minimum standards needed in raising chickens and other
animals. This also ensures that all guidelines set in this manual are strictly
implemented by all growers to raise confidence in consumer’s standards.
The following requirements in controlling the quality of water and its
treatment should be observe.

3
1. It should be potable water to prevent disease transmission.
2. For the watering stock, the water should be tested first and should
be fit for chicken consumption with acceptable biological and
mineralogical quality.
3. In case of non-potable water, it should be treated in compliance with
standards.
4. For every batch of chicken, water sanitizing system should be
checked regularly at least once to ensure quality source of water.
5. Record of appropriate parameters during daily checking of water
treatment facilities should be done
6. Chicken may drink treated water to cool its body and to wash down
shed.
7. Checking of Pathogen level should be done regularly.
8. If applicable, you may use the ASEAN Biosecurity Management
Manual for Commercial Poultry Farming to mitigate the spread of
disease.
9. The supply troughs should be provided so that these may help in
cooling the blood supply in the combs and wattles whenever chicken
dip it.
10. In order to maintain the coolness of the housing, one must bury or
insulate water pipes.
11. During hot weather, birds may consume water more thus adequate
water should be prepare to help ease the hotness.
12. During hot weather, one must avoid putting medicines into the water
which could contribute to reduction in palatability and uptake.
13. To avoid moving the birds more than 1 ½ meters during feeding, it is
necessary to distribute the water and food evenly.

Table 1. Below is the recommended minimum watering space requirements

Two 1-gallon drinking fountains/100 birds or 0.5 cm/bird Day old to four
weeks
Two 2-gallon drinking fountains/100 birds or 0.6 cm-1 four weeks to
cm/bird eight weeks
Four 2-gallon drinking fountains/100 birds or 1 cm-2 nine weeks to
cm/bird near laying age
Six 2-gallon drinking fountains/100 birds or 2 cm-2.5 Layers
cm/bird

Additional things to remember:

 drinking trough in poultry house should have an adjustable
bracket, same size and shape to permit easier cleaning
 most common waterer for chick is made of plastic since it will
last longer and to avoid rusting
 before chick delivery, the waterer should be filled first with
water several hours to make the water warm (approx. 25
degrees Celsius)

4
 give water to chicks one to 2 hours before feeding to reduce
dehydration and faster absorption of nutrients
 train the chicks to drink first before feeding

______________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________

What is It

One important aspect in poultry raising is proper storage of feeds in

order to ensure top quality feeds. Safekeeping the feeds will protect it from
pest such as rodents and will minimize the formation of molds that may
reduce its quality and nutritional values. These pests might also bring toxins
to feeds when eaten and could bring further damage. Among the effects of
poor safekeeping are malnutrition, high mortality rate and poor growth.
Below are some factors to consider in safekeeping of feeds:

11
1. Distance of the storage house
It is highly recommended that storage house should be close to
poultry house or it could be built inside the poultry house to provide
convenience during feeding.
2. Storage Facility
Feeds should be kept dry and ensure that the humidity is low.
It should provide maximum protection from vermin such as rats and
insect pest that brings diseases. In addition, it should be off the
ground to prevent mold formation and should be protected from
harmful drugs and chemicals.
3. Storage Conditions
Reduction in shelf life of feeds is also due to poor storage
conditions and could lead to the loss of important nutrients such as
anti-oxidants which cause high mortality rate. Leaving feeds on the
ground will cause mold formation which will result a serious health
problems to poultry. Mycotoxins will also form especially during hot
weather condition.
One challenge owner mostly face is that it is very hard to
predict its shelf life. In addition, local climate plays a vital role in
determining the shelf life of the feeds. It is not also guaranteed that
even the best housing facility could not help prevent spoilage thus
storing it in short span of time is advisable.
4. Temperature
It should be away from direct sunlight since it may have impact
to the nutritional content of the feeds. It is advisable to use iron
sheets to reflect back the sunlight. Insulated bins could also be use
during hot weather to stabilize temperature inside the facility.
In order to minimize feed wastage, here are some important reminders:
1. It should not be filled more than 1/3 of its depth.
2. Age of chicken determines the size of feeders. These feeders should
have a lid guard measuring 1-2 cm to avoid scratching.
3. To prevent feed spoilage, avoid spill in the water and check the
waterer for possible leak.

no longer be given to the chickens? Defend your answer.

What is It

Hazardous Waste is defined as any by product (commercial,

agricultural or industrial) that pose risk to health, environment and safety.
Infections made by fungi to feeds causing spoilage can cause diseases to
animals, thus proper disposal should be observe
Storing feeds for a longer time is another problem for poultry raisers.
Philippines have wet and dry season which could highly affect the
palatability of feeds. This also caused the formation of molds and bacteria.
Moldy feeds reduce palatability and lose some vital nutrients. Heating of
feeds is caused by rapid growth of molds. When eaten by the animals, it may
cause serious damage leading to numerous diseases.

18
Procedure for any disposal of waste (commercial, agricultural,
industrial)

1. All waste generators shall be required to submit and register in the

Department of Environment and Natural Resources the needed
documents with corresponding fees.
