survey on the guides in obtaining broiler and layer stocks from
reliable/recommended sources.
3. During the visit, talk among yourselves for the division of the following
activities:
Ask the farmer on the following questions:
a. What are your guides in selecting broiler and layer breeds?
b. What breed of broiler or layer are you raising?
c. Why such breed (broiler or layer) is commonly raised?
Take pictures on the conduct of the survey.
4. Make a research on the importance of obtaining broiler and layer
stocks from reliable/recommended sources in the siccess of poultry
production.

What Is It
Let’s explore!
In this lesson you will learn the “Brooding and Growing of Chicks”
specifically the proper housing of broilers (DOC) and pullets (DOP) as
presented in this lesson.
Guide Questions:
What are the DO’s before, during and after the arrival of chicks in their
brooding house?
What are the basic requirements in placing a day-old chicks (DOC) and
day-old pullets (DOP) to respective brooding houses observing Good
Animal Practices and Animal Welfare Act?
Why proper housing of broiler and pullets important?
.
These are the questions that you need to answer as you go through
this lesson.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Brooder (chick house) - it is used to brood and rear egg-type chicks from 0
to 8 weeks of age.
Layer - An egg-type or dual type 6- month female fowl that lays eggs.
11
Poultry - can be defined as domestic fowls, including chickens, turkeys,
geese and ducks raised for the production of meat and eggs for
food.
12
3. The weak and deformed chicks should be isolated for medication
and attention giving. The dead ones should be buried or burned as
of the arrival.
4. It is normal to have 24-hour lightning for the first 2-3 days of the
chicks, allowing them to eat and drink ad libitum to recover from
long transportation period.
5. Electrolytes should be given to the chicks.
6. A regular check or monitoring of chicks should be conducted to
identify problems or abnormalites on their behavior ir in the brooder
itself.
7. Observation should be recorded for reporting.
a. Temperature Correct
o The chicks feel comfortable and evenly distributed.
o Chicks noise level signs of contentment.
13
b. Temperature Draft
o The chicks wedge behind the hover.
o There is external noises and uneven temperature
distribution.
14
RECOMMENDED BROODING TEMPERATURES FOR BROILERS
Age of Chicks Brooding Temperature
(weeks) (oC)
0-1 32.2- 35.0 (90-95 F)
1-2 29.4- 32.2 (85-90 F)
2-4 26.7- 29.4 (80-85 F)
Above 4 weeks Remove the supply of heat
2. Llighting
Chick activity is greater in a well- lighted brooder or at the
brightest intensity since it attracts and encourages the chicks
to seek out food and water sources.
3. Ventilation
Sufficient ventilation is necessary to supply plenty of oxygen and
facilitate the removal of carbon dioxide, ammonia and other
gases, dust, odors and excess moisture.
4. Ample Space
Poor developed chicks, high mortality, as well as harmful vices
like toe picking, feather picking or cannibalism are the results of
overcrowding.
SPACE REQUIREMENTS FOR PULLETS/LAYERS
Age of Chicks Space Requirement
(weeks) (ft/chick)
0-4 0.5-1 sq. ft/chick
4-8 0.75 sq. ft/chick
Nine weeks to 17 weeks 1.5 sq. ft/chick
15
5. Healthy Stocks
Healthy chicks should only be selected.
Healthy chicks sleep quite a bit; the eyes are open, alert and
bright.
They are active, eating, drinking and exploring their environment
when awake.
Chicks with wet vents, dull eyes, not react when approach and
may appear sleepy most of the time or crushed shut should not
be selected.
6. Correct Feeding
The chicks should be feed intermittently rather than
continuously.
According to the research studies, chicks utilize nutrients better
when using intermittently feeding.
7. Proper Sanitation
Cleanliness and dryness of the brooding quarters should be
maintained to prevent contamination of the chicks from parasites
and diseases.
8. Regularity of Care and Management
Environment should be kept as uniform as possible, sudden
changes in surroundings causes a certain degree of stress.
During the first three weeks of chick’s life, it is advisable that a
regular caretaker feed the chickens following definite schedule.
9. Environmental Control
Optimum house temperature for laying birds is between 18-19
0
C.
Flocks health and performance are highly dependent on
temperature control and good ventilation.
16
CLASSIFICATION OF ARTIFICIAL BROODING
Large number of baby chicks is reared in the absence of broody
hen.
Brooder is the equipment used in brooding.
1. Electricity/ Electrical Brooder
This is thermostatically controlled heating system can be used
for 300 to 400 chicks.
