What I Need to Know

Poultry farming is raising of different kinds of domestic birds

commercially for the purpose of meat, eggs and feather production. The most
common and widely raised poultry birds are chickens. Chicken Production is
one of the most progressive animal entrprise in the Philippine today. Raising
chicken is only a backyard enterprise in the beginning but since it is profitable,
it shifted to a bigger farming business. Many farmers establish poultry farm
because it can generate high revenue from their eggs and meat products.
In raising a flock of chickens, it is very necessary to buy from a reliable
or recommended sources in the locality. It is also important to identify the
breed of broiler or layer to be raised. The success of the poultry farm depends
on the quality of chicks or pullets being raised.
At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to:
1. Identify guides in obtaining broiler and layer stocks from reliable /
recommended sources;

2. Identify the different broiler and layer breeds; and

3. Appreciate the importance of obtaining broiler and layer stocks from

reliable / recommended sources to the success of poultry raising.

Placing Day-Old Chicks and
Lesson Day-Old Pullets to Respective
Brooding Houses Observing
2 Good Animal Practices and
Welfare Act

What I Need to Know

Brooding is the art or science of rearing chicks. It is the process of

providing supplemental heat to the chicks from hatching up to the time that
the chicks have grown sufficient feathers and have developed its
thermoregulatory system to control their own body. During this period,
optimum heat is very important to the chicks to prevent them from chilling
which result to diseases and eventually deaths. It covers the 4 to 8 weeks life
of a chick.
One of the most important factors in successful broilers or pullets
rearing is considering the flock condition and behavior based on the farmer
daily observation. They can grow fast depending on the suitability of their
brooding environment.
At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to:
1. Determine the DO’s before, during and after the arrival of chicks
in their brooding house;

2. Identify the basic requirements in placing a Day-Old Chicks

(DOC) and Day-Old Pullets (DOP) to respective brooding
houses observing Good Animal Practices and Animal Welfare
Act; and

3. Appreciate the importance of proper housing of broiler and

pullets.

Above 4 weeks Remove the supply of heat

2. Llighting
 Chick activity is greater in a well- lighted brooder or at the
brightest intensity since it attracts and encourages the chicks
to seek out food and water sources.
3. Ventilation
 Sufficient ventilation is necessary to supply plenty of oxygen and
facilitate the removal of carbon dioxide, ammonia and other
gases, dust, odors and excess moisture.
4. Ample Space
 Poor developed chicks, high mortality, as well as harmful vices
like toe picking, feather picking or cannibalism are the results of
overcrowding.
 SPACE REQUIREMENTS FOR PULLETS/LAYERS
Age of Chicks Space Requirement
(weeks) (ft/chick)
0-4 0.5-1 sq. ft/chick
4-8 0.75 sq. ft/chick
Nine weeks to 17 weeks 1.5 sq. ft/chick

 SPACE REQUIREMENTS FOR BROILERS

Age of Chicks (weeks) Space Requirement (ft/chick)
0-3 0.3 sq. ft/chick
3-4 0.5 sq. ft/chick
5- Market Age 1 sq. ft/chick

15
5. Healthy Stocks
 Healthy chicks should only be selected.
 Healthy chicks sleep quite a bit; the eyes are open, alert and
bright.
 They are active, eating, drinking and exploring their environment
when awake.
 Chicks with wet vents, dull eyes, not react when approach and
may appear sleepy most of the time or crushed shut should not
be selected.
6. Correct Feeding
 The chicks should be feed intermittently rather than
continuously.
 According to the research studies, chicks utilize nutrients better
when using intermittently feeding.

 RECOMMENDED FEEDING SPACE FOR BROILERS

Age of Chicks Feeding Space Requirement
(weeks) (cm/chick)
0-4 2.5 to 5 cm/chick
4-8 5 to 6.5 cm/chick

7. Proper Sanitation
 Cleanliness and dryness of the brooding quarters should be
maintained to prevent contamination of the chicks from parasites
and diseases.
8. Regularity of Care and Management
 Environment should be kept as uniform as possible, sudden
changes in surroundings causes a certain degree of stress.
 During the first three weeks of chick’s life, it is advisable that a
regular caretaker feed the chickens following definite schedule.
9. Environmental Control
 Optimum house temperature for laying birds is between 18-19
0
C.
 Flocks health and performance are highly dependent on
temperature control and good ventilation.

16
CLASSIFICATION OF ARTIFICIAL BROODING
 Large number of baby chicks is reared in the absence of broody
hen.
 Brooder is the equipment used in brooding.
1. Electricity/ Electrical Brooder
 This is thermostatically controlled heating system can be used
for 300 to 400 chicks.

 The amount of heat is uniformly spread and the desired

temperature is easily attained above large area that avoids the
crowding of chicks under brooder directly.

 The danger from fire is less.

 An electric- hover type brooder has built-in resistant coil that
provides heat.

2. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)/ Gas Brooder

 It is a natural gas or methane connected to heating element
which is hanged 3 to 5 feet above the chick to provide heat.
 Can be used in areas where fuel or electricity sources are not
available and expensive.
 Popularly used in large- scale poultry farms.
 Effective and efficient in providing heat for large number of
chicks at a relatively lower cost.

3. Charcoal Stove/ Kerosene Stove

 Commonly used in areas where other fuel or electricity sources
are not available and expensive.
 Covered with plate/ pans to dissipate the supplementary heat
use by chicks.
 Cheap and readily available.
