A. Introduction DAY 1 Fertilizer plays an essential role in the overall growth and yield
(1 Hour) of vegetable crops. Supplemental fertilizer will enrich the soil with the
nutrients and minerals needed for optimal growth of the next generation
of vegetables planted. If applied incorrectly, it can not only harm plants, but
also the environment. Regular fertilizer application keeps plants vigorous
and productive. When plants grow reluctantly or start turning yellow, fertilizer
may help. If plants are vigorous and green, you can wait a little bit before
applying more fertilizer. Too much fertilizer can burn plants.
INFORMATION SHEET 1
According to Mcvickar (1970), fertilizer is any manufactured or processed
material or mixture of materials that contains one or more of the recognized
plant-food elements, in liquid or dry form.
On the other hand, INGO (2005) claimed that a fertilizer is any organic or
inorganic material of natural or synthetic origin, which is added to the soil to
supply certain elements essential to plant growth. In recent years, however,
increasing attention has been focused on organic and bio-fertilizers that are
biological sources of plant nutrients.
The amount of fertilizer to be applied depends on many factors, which
include the nutrient requirement of the plants, the ability of the soil to supply
nutrients, yield potential, other management practices, the capability of the
farmer, and other environmental factors particularly rainfall.
Information Sheet 2
Kinds of fertilizer
1. Organic fertilizers are farm manures, compost, crop residues, and other
farm wastes, which supply nutrients and improve soil physical conditions.
Organic fertilizer is generally the most valuable soil conditioner.
Furthermore, Sangatan and Sangatan (2000) enumerated the sources of
organic fertilizer as follows:
➢ Animal wastes from: cattle, carabao, pig, goat, poultry, and horse
manure or urine, guano (bat manure) etc.
➢ Crop wastes: rice straw, corn stalks, weeds, stubbles, plant leaves
➢ Human inhabitation wastes: night soil, sewage, and garbage
➢ Green manure: ipil-ipil leaves, legumes, and madre de cacao
leaves
➢ Water crops or plants: water hyacinth (water lily), water alligator
➢ Biological organic sources: azolla, and blue green algae
2. Inorganic (chemical) fertilizers) It consists of materials processed or
transformed into a chemical material or fertilizer.
We have different methods of fertilizer application. There are four methods
of application for solid fertilizers and five methods in liquid fertilizers. One kind
of solid fertilizer application is the basal fertilizer application. Basal
application is the application of fertilizer before or during planting. Here, the
fertilizer is distributed over the entire field uniformly and to mixed with soil.

How to use Basal Fertilizer Application
You can start by digging around 6cm deep hole which is meant for either
your seeds or seedlings, measure 6 to 10g of inorganic fertilizer (0:15:15 or
10:20:20 or 15:15:15) and apply this to the hole. A simple way of measuring
6g to 10g of fertilizer is by using a full but leveled bottle water or soda cap.
While the application of organic manure, green manure, and vermicast are
distributed on the field before planting. After applying the fertilizer, cover the
hole completely with soil; gently put your seed on the soil directly on the
covered fertilizer and gently cover your seed with moist soil. As for the
seedling, place it directly on top of the soil and hold the seedling firmly then
gather soil from the surrounding portion.
B. Development DAY 2 Learning Task 1 WORD SEARCH.
(2 Hours) Find the words related to fertilizer and write it in your answer sheet.

Learning Task 2 Read the following questions then write your answer in a
sheet of paper.
1. Why fertilizer application is not advisable during rainy season?
2. What does fertilizer do for vegetables?
3. Is fertilizer necessary for a vegetable garden?
4. What will happen if we apply fertilizer incorrectly?
5. What are the effects of organic fertilizer to our environment?

Learning Task 3
True or False. Write true if the statement is correct and false if it is wrong.
_____ 1. Organic gardening is less expensive than gardening with the use of
chemical or commercial fertilizer.
_____ 2. When a food package reads “certified organically grown,” you can
be assured that the food was grown organically.
_____ 3. Organic pesticides are all natural, and therefore nontoxic and
completely safe.
_____ 4. A garden full of bacteria is an unhealthy one.
_____ 5. Compost smells bad, but the results are worth it.

Pakikipagpalihan (1 Hour) Monitoring Plan (Please copy the table in ½ index card)
In this activity you are going to transplant 2 pechay seedlings in different
container. Add chicken manure or vermicast in the first container while pure
garden soil in the second container. After a week, record your observation
in the table below. Explain your findings between the two plants in the
container.

D. Assimilation Day 4
(20 mins)

Healthy soil is the foundation of the food system. It produces healthy crops
through basal fertilizer application that in turn nourish people. Maintaining a
healthy soil demands care and effort from farmers.

Plants obtain nutrients from two natural sources: organic matter and
minerals. Organic matter includes any plant or animal material that returns
to the soil and goes through the decomposition process.

Learning Task 6 Copy the table below in a sheet of paper. Then fill it up with the
proper application process of basal application on seeds and seedlings.
