Quarter 4 – Module 2: Preparing Harvesting Tools, Materials and Records
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussion are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will
tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are
provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM.
Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and test. Read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.
This module was designed and written for the learners to help them Perform
Preharvest Operations. After going through this module, the learner is expected to:
1. identify harvesting tools and materials, and temporary shed; and
2. check records regarding crops to be harvested.

Lesson
Tools, Materials and
1 Records
This module will help you to acquire about the knowledge, skills and attitude
in performing preharvest operations. In this module, it focuses in identifying and
preparing harvesting tools, materials, and records regarding crops to be harvested.
What’s In
In our previous lesson, you learned about how to identify crop maturity
indices. While in our new lesson, it will help you to identify and prepare the
harvesting tools, materials and temporary shed and be able to check sample of
records regarding crops to be harvested.

What Is It
scythe
Machete
The most common tools used for
harvesting fruit are steel pruning
shears. They are used to cut the stem
of the fruit as close to the button, or
calyx, as possible without injuring the
shoulder of the fruit. Some vegetable
fruits, like tomatoes, can easily be
picked by a simple twist of the hand,
Pruning shears while pruning shears are used on
others like peppers.
Usually made from durable plastic and
is well-ventilated. They are also
designed to be stacked. Fruits and
vegetables, which damage easily, are
picked into picking crates taken to the
cold rooms or packing sheds as soon as
possible. Clean, dry and sterilized
crates should be used to prevent
disease contamination.
Crate
4
Used in harvesting leafy crops such as
cabbage heads, pechay, mustard and
lettuce. A good quality knife with a
strong blade should be supplied to the
harvesters. Crates, which are damaged
in such a way that bruising or
puncturing of the crops.
could occur should be discarded. The
blade should be sharp enough to
facilitate easy cutting. A blunt knife will
not only reduce the harvest speed, but
can cause unnecessary damage to the
produce. Knives should be regularly
cleaned and disinfected while
harvesting to prevent the spread of
Knife post-harvest decay organisms.
Vary from home-made, single-sided,
two-legged ladders made from locally
grown wood to factory-manufactured,
two- or three-legged ladders generally
made from aluminum or wood.
These are used during harvesting of
tree crops depending on the height of
trees and are placed alongside trees, or
rested against the canopy in the case of
larger trees.
Ladder
In the case of smaller production areas,
where mechanical harvesters cannot be
used, a fork can be used instead for
lifting produce. The fork is inserted into
the soil at an angle, close to the crop
plant and then the plant and soil are
lifted. Take care not to push one of the
fork teeth into a tuber, bulb etc.
Garden fork
It is used to protect the yields from
exposure to sunlight and rainfall. It
serves also as resting place for farmers
after the long day work in the farm.
