LESSON 1. PARTICIPATING IN WORKPLACE COMMUNICATIONS (PWC)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Communication is the process of exchanging information and ideas. There are many
means of communication. To be an effective and valuable member of your workplace it is
important that you become skilled in all of the different methods of communication that are
appropriate. The communication process for communication to occur must pass from a sender to
a receiver. This must occur irrespective of the form of communication. For communication to
be effective it must be understood by the receiver and be able to be responded to. This means
that total communication involves speaking, reading, listening, and reasoning skills. As
communications pass from the source to the receiver there is plenty of opportunity for its original
meaning to change or alter.
Therefore listening, reasoning and feedback is an important part of the process as it is
an opportunity for the sender to make sure the receiver has understood the message.

LESSON 1. PARTICIPATING IN WORKPLACE COMMUNICATIONS (PWC)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Every workplace often holds staff meetings, team meetings, formal and informal
discussion with their employees/workers. Have you ever been to one of those meetings where no
objective were met, no actions were agreed upon and generally it was a complete waste of your
time? Effective meeting procedures are essential to ensure that the maximum output is gained
from a meeting.
Some basic considerations are:
1. A clearly defined purpose of the meeting.
2. Advise people to attend the meeting on time. Make sure that you clearly communicate
the meeting purpose well before hand, this gives attendees time to gather ideas or research issues
prior to attending the meeting.
3. Ask questions for clarifications if needed. Like, How urgent the meeting is?, What are
we trying to achieve?
4. Consider that at times the purpose of bringing people together for a meeting is to
achieve other important interpersonal objectives like team building, brain storming or group
problem solving.
5. Set an agenda. An agenda aims to keep discussions on track and to keep everyone
focused on the issues.
6. Start and finish on time. Make sure the meeting starts and finishes on time so
participants feel that their time is valued and that they can plan for effective meeting
participation to fit within their work load.
7. Manage the participants. It is important that every person feels their attendance and
contribution is valued. People must be given the opportunity to express their opinion. Clear
conflict management strategies must be in place.

LESSON 1. PARTICIPATING IN WORKPLACE COMMUNICATIONS (PWC)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
In every workplace you will be required to complete forms. Each workplace will have
forms specific to their requirements. You must make sure that you know which forms to fill in,
when you need to use forms and where to find the necessary forms.
Tips when filling out a form:
 Read the form carefully.
 Fill in all the required details
 Include necessary information
 Write clearly and simply
 Check that you have completed it properly
 Send it to the appropriate person, or file in the appropriate place.

Coping with work instructions.

 Work instructions are the most basic tool used in every business or organization
to help workers follow a sequence of steps. Inadequate work instructions are
likely to result in a variety of problems in the workplace that could range from:
o returned products
o loss of materials
o customer complaints
o liability issues
o poor work performance
 Work instructions can have a major impact on the effectiveness and productivity
of a workplace. If instructions are difficult to follow, workers will make errors in
implementing the steps.
 A good work instruction is a detailed sequence of steps that workers need to
follow each time they perform a task. The purpose of a work instruction is to
organize steps in a logical and systematic way so that workers can easily follow it
independently.

LESSON 2. WORKING IN TEAM ENVIRONMENT (WTE)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Knowing everyone’s role and being familiar with the responsibility of those roles
create efficiency and flexibility. Ideas for clarifying roles on the team include:

 Review team members’ roles frequently.

 Relate team member expectations to the team’s overall purpose.
 Clarify responsibilities when action planning.
 Learn what others do on the team.
 Figure out ways to help each other.

Setting aside time to really evaluate what you do and how that impacts (or not) the
company you work for is important to understanding the value you and your role have with that
organization. Are you a key player on your team? If not, does the role provide opportunities for
you to advance toward this?
After fully understanding your current role, value within your company, and its possible
benefits and setbacks for your future, it’s time to take action. So many people become
complacent in their careers and on the job. If after evaluating your overall situation you discover
that it’s actually beneficial to step out of your current role, do it. Don’t be afraid to follow after
what your heart truly desires.

Relationship and Responsibility

Being a mutually evolving process, a relationship requires team members to be dependent
on each other. Every individual should develop a level of trust for each other in order to be
reliable for each other. Some of us just cannot find it easy to entrust a work with another team
member or cannot seem to trust what a member can contribute.
In order to build trust, the team can hold trust-building talks during meetings every now
and then. Self-disclosure is a good strategy for establishing trust with each other. Learning how
to open and share a little about you to your teammates will give them a chance to know you as a
person. Inject humor and some fun to be comfortable with each other.
Once you start to trust each other as an important member of the team, you will also
become easily dependent on each other. With this, a budding relationship is established. Each
NOTE: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
individual in a team has talents and abilities that can contribute to a solid work relationship
which is needed to be productive in the job. As a team, members have to identify who excel in
technical expertise, who are keen in problem-solving and decision-making, and who are adept in
active listening, giving good feedback, and conflict resolution.
Identifying these skills helps a team perform effectively. This is otherwise known as team
synergy through a coordinated effort of performing these abilities. Diversities even in skills and
talents are common. But sharing these skills for the benefit of the team can build a solid work
relationship among the individuals.
For a relationship to become healthy, learn to appreciate each other’s talents. Being
recognized by fellow colleagues for the effort contributed for the team is heartwarming and
rewarding.

Relationship with a Team

Typically, in a work setting, every working individual belongs to a team where a group of
members work together with similar functions and work description, though not necessarily
similar in interests.
Also, individuals in a team generate a collaborative effort to achieve common goals, and
may need to give up individual autonomy in order to attain those goals. The organization as a
whole can make up a team and this component is by far the largest to be called as such.
If you are paired up with another work colleague on a project, you are already called a
team. Regardless of the population of the members and diversities in a team, building a
relationship is a crucially important factor grounded on teamwork.
Team members who develop a common strategy in working such as using a discussion in
the interaction process or assigning tasks are manifesting teamwork. Individuals work together
by sharing individual objectives and eventually come up with a unified goal.
Being a part of a team also entails commitment in the job and the responsibility. In order
for a team to be harmonious, a good working relationship has to be established..

LESSON 2. WORKING IN TEAM ENVIRONMENT (WTE)
BACKGROUND INFORMATION

One of the oldest workplace struggles is knowing how to prioritize your work. With

more tasks to do, and higher expectations, deciding what deserves your attention can quickly
become overwhelming.
However, mastering prioritization can change your life. Knowing your priorities
reduces stress, helps you focus and ignore FOMO, can improve productivity and time
management, and even help with work-life balance as you create better boundaries for your
workday. Once you know how to prioritize your tasks and your time, you realize that much
of the work that felt urgent doesn’t really need your attention. At least not right away. But
while the elements of prioritizing your work are simple, know what tasks need to be done
and rank them by importance, it’s far from a simple exercise.  When priorities are piling up,
you need a clear system in place to take you from being overwhelmed to under control. In
this guide, the best strategies on how to prioritize your daily tasks, optimize your time, and
focus on the work that matters most are presented.

How to prioritize your tasks (and your time).

 Capture everything on a Master List and then break it down by monthly, weekly, and
daily goals.
 Separate the urgent from the important tasks with the Eisenhower Matrix.
 Rank your daily tasks by their true priority with the Ivy Lee Method.
 Separate tasks with similar priorities using the ABCDE method.
 Set a productive tone for the day by “Eating the frog”.
 Cut out “good enough” goals with Warren Buffett’s 2-list strategy.
 Be aware of the sunk cost fallacy when choosing what deserves your time (i.e. be flexible
enough to change your mind and drop priorities).
 Use Time Multipliers to make the most of your daily hours
 Prioritize your most important work during your most productive hours.

LESSON 2. WORKING IN TEAM ENVIRONMENT (WTE).

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The following are considered when working as a team.

 Embrace Teamwork
A key quality of the workplace is working well with others.  Prioritize open
communication between all levels of an organization, including everyone from peers to
supervisors to customers.  A team member’s work and actions provides value and talent to a
team, client, and organization.
 Accountability
Taking responsibility for your actions is a major factor when it comes to
workplace ethics.  Team members must show up on scheduled workdays, and put in honest effort
while on the clock. A team member’s work and actions provides value and talent to the team,
clients, and organization.
 Do what is just, right & fair
Think before you act.  Investigate and evaluate all situations before determining
how to proceed.  Act appropriately based on facts and free from biases, not personal
feelings.  Demonstrating exceptional honesty and integrity creates a positive work environment.
 Dedication
Complacency and mediocrity should have no place in your organization.  Team
members must exemplify a strong work ethic and positive attitude toward all projects.  If you
work to create a company culture where everyone understands the purpose of what you are
doing, the more engaged everyone will be.

foods in our table each meal. These tools are also used to help the livestock farms to have the
food they need to survive.

LESSON 3. USING FARM TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT (UFTE)
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The best way to prolong the useful life of farm tools, equipment, and materials is
through regular checkups. Preventive Maintenance will prolong the useful life of tools and will
reduce time and effort at work, resulting to efficient operations.
Steps in maintaining the use of farm tools and equipment.
1. Prepare all the materials needed to clean and sharpen your tools. Sandpaper,

NOTE: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

whetstone, oil, and rags are the basics materials used to sharpen cutting tools.
2. Select a place in your shop where you can position your tools sturdily. Vise and
clamps are useful tools to hold your cutting tools tightly while being sanded or
cleaned.
3. Dismantle cutting tools like hedge shears to clean conveniently.
4. Sand the tools carefully to removed rust. Use whetstone to sharpen tools like
knives, bolos, and shears. You may apply lubricating oil to prevent the
formation of rust.
Basic Maintenance of Electrical Tools and Equipment
To ensure that your electric tools work when you need them, you must take proper
care of them. A good routine of maintenance for your tools is one thing that you can do to make
sure that the tool you need is working when you need it.
1. Clean out the Dust. To make sure that your electric tools are ready to go when you
are, keep them clean and free of dust. Spend some time to clean out the dust every once in a
while on your tools while they are inactive in storage.
2. Check the Cords. Look for tear/cut insulator on the power cords on your electric
tools. This will ensure that your electric tool can get the power that it needs to function without
an accident.
3. Use the right tool correctly. Use tools correctly and for their intended purposes.
Follow the safety directions and operating procedures recommended by the manufacturer. When
working on a circuit, use approved tools with insulated handles.
4. Protect your Tools. Keep tools and cords away from heat, oil, and sharp objects.
These hazards can damage insulation. If a tool or cord heats up, stop using it. Report the
condition to a supervisor or instructor immediately.
5. Use double-insulated tools. Portable electrical tools are classified by the number of
insulation barriers between the electrical conductors in the tool and the worker.
6. Storing Your Tools. Keep your electric tools stored in their original cases and
containers. This will keep them free of dust and dirt while they are not being used.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are gadgets to protect workers from injury or
illness caused by having contact with the dangers/hazards in the workplace whether they are
chemical, biological, radiation, physical, electrical, mechanical and others. The common Personal
Protective Equipment gadgets are Hard Hats/ Helmets, Gloves, Goggle, Mask, Boots , Pants,
Long sleeved shirts. These should be taken cared of as of the other tools and equipments. Wipe
your helmets, gloves, safety shoes before keeping it.It should also be cleaned and kept in proper
tool rack or cabinet. It should be stored in dry places so that it will not have mold build- up.
Over-all suits should be washed regularly so that perspirations and other dirt shoukld be washed
clean.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
LESSON 4. PERFORMING ESTIMATION AND BASIC
CALCULATIONS
NOTE: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
(PEBC)
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Inputs into livestock production consist of land, housing, water, labor and livestock feed.
The most important input into small scale livestock production is livestock feed. Livestock plays
an important role in nutrition - directly through the consumption of animal products by livestock
owners and their families; and indirectly through the sale of animals and animal products as a
source of income.
Feeding has been essential in both livestock and poultry production in determining the
value of ration given to animals by estimation or calculation.

A. Types of Feed
There are three types of feed available in the market. Each type differs in the proportion
of nutrients in the feed. The change in nutrient proportion is important to address the needs of the
pig at different stages of growth. The shift from one ration to another should be done gradually
in order not to upset the normal feeding behavior of the pigs. Always allow a transition period of
at least one week.
1. Starter Feed – A starter feed is given to 10 to 20 kgs. weaners until the pigs are about
three months old and weigh 30 to 35 kgs. A starter feed contains 18 percent crude protein (CP)
and 3,250 kilocalories (Kca/j) of digestible energy (DE).
2. Grower Feed – Next to starter feed is the grower feed. This is given until the pigs reach
a weight of 60 kgs. Grower ration contains 16 percent CP and 3,200 Kcal DE.
3. Finisher Feed – At 60 kgs, the pigs‘ ration is shifted to finisher feed. It is given to
finisher pig up to 80 to 90 kgs ready for the market. The ration contains 14 percent CP with
3,200 Kcal DE.
B. Feeding Methods
The growth performance of the pigs is not only affected by the quantity and quality of
feed given but also by the methods of feeding. The three basic feeding methods for finishers are
restricted feeding, ad libitum, and combination of ad libitum and restricted. The level of feeding
can vary from restricted feeding (about 80% satisfaction) to ad libutum level (100% satisfaction).
1. Restricted Feeding. In restricted feeding, the amount of feed given is controlled or
limited to a certain amount just to satisfy the appetite of the pig.
Advantages:
 better feed conversion ratio (FCR) (lower feed cost and better performance)
 good carcass quality
 better health control
 less digestive problems
Disadvantages:
 lower Average Daily Gain
 unequal growth especially if feed trough is not long enough to accommodate
all
pigs

NOTE: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.

 more laborious
 less chance of coping with higher market price
Restricted feeding is done through the use of a long feeding trough where all pigs eat at
the same time. However, the length of the trough should be long enough to accommodate each
fattener during feeding time.
A good criterion for restricted feeding is that the trough should be empty after 15 or 20
minutes if given as slop. For dry mash or pelletized feeds, it is normally consumed in 20 to 30
minutes. The level of feeding is based on the growth rate of the pigs.

2. Ad Libitum Feeding. Ad libitum feeding is feeding without restrictions and feed is

made available anytime. This feeding method should be practiced if pigs finished have high
growth potentials and they are in good health. Dry feed should always be used for this feeding
method. Fresh feed improves the feed intake and feed efficiency, thus self-feeders should be
emptied and cleaned at least once a week to prevent microbial spoilage. Pigs find infested feed
unpalatable thus, wastage of feed is high. Continuous supply of fresh and clean water is
important in ad libitum feeding because water intake increases when this method is practiced.
Advantages:
 higher ADG is achieved
 less feed competition
 less laborious
 Disadvantages:
 thicker backfat
 higher feed conversion ration (higher feed cost)
 more digestive problems in younger pigs
 less control on health problems

C. Combination of Ad Libitum and Restricted Feeding

Pigs are fed ad libitum until they reach the weight of 50 kgs. and fed restricted until they
are marketed. With this feeding method, the growth potential of the animal can be maximized
during its first 50 kgs. of growth. Restriction is practiced to reduce backfat thickness with a
corresponding increase in lean cut yield.
Advantages:
 higher ADG with good carcass qualify
 lower feed cost
 better use of good feed (better FCR)
Disadvantages:
 higher possibility of digestive problems if shifting is not properly done
 less control of health problems and feed intake at the start
To determine the FCR or Feed Conversion Ration we must use the formula below:
Feed consumed (kg)
Feed Conversion Ratio = __________________
NOTE: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
Gain in Weight (kg)
Record Keeping
It is important to keep good records of broiler performance. A sample of a
record sheet covers the following.
 record when you open a new batch of feed of known weight
 mark when a bird dies or is removed from the pen
 record weight of birds when weighed at 4 and 7 weeks
 take a sample of say 10 birds in a batch of 50 and weigh them at 4 weeks
 divide total bird weight by number of birds weighed to get average broiler
weight
 add up all feed used (weight of bag x number of bags) then divide by total
weight of birds, then by the number of birds
 Feed conversion ratio is feed consumed divided by the total weight of
birds
 calculate mortality rate = (Number of dead birds/total number of birds at
the start) x 100
