Introduction

For our Mathematics School Based Assessment, we will be investigating how students of Form
Four attendance were affected by virtual school. We are interested in this topic because we both
have experienced this as well, we have also observed that students of Form Four St. Joseph
attendance were affected due to not having devices to attend online classes. We would like to
investigate whether this is more common among other students. To prove this, we intend to do a
full study of this statement, which will require us to send our online questionnaire to both
students and teachers of SJS.
To investigate this topic, we plan to do a questionnaire which will help us prove that this
statement is true. The topic in Mathematics that we will be using to investigate our problem is
the knowledge of Statistics.

Method of Data Collection

For our data collection we will be constructing two questionnaires separately. The questionnaire
will consist of four closed ended questions each. One questionnaire will be sent to the students of
SJS (St. Joseph Secondary) and the other one will be sent to the teachers. There were a number
of Forty (40) questionnaires sent out to the students and thirteen (13) to the teachers. The
students were required to respond within Forty-eight (48) hours and answer all questions with
their honest opinion.

Presentation of Data

A total of 40 students answered the questionnaire. Of these 50% were male and 50% were
female.

Fig 1: Number of students that believe their attendance was affected during online schooling

Figure 1 (one) shows the number of students that believe their attendance was affected during
online schooling. The question was asked would you say your attendance was affected during
online schooling. It can be seen in the chart that 20% of students said yes ,12% said no and 8%
said maybe. So, the majority vote showed that online classes affected their attendance.

Fig 2: Number of students attendance before the pandemic

Figure two shows the number of students attending before the pandemic. The question was asked
how often you would say you attended school before the pandemic. The pie chart made it clear
the attendance before the pandemic there were less missed days, only one or two days were
missed stated by 51.7% of responses while 34.5% never missed a day and 13.8% missed more
than five days.

A total of 13 teachers answered the questionnaire. Of these 80% are female teacher and
20% male.

Fig 3: The class attendance in teacher class for physical school

Figure three shows the class attendance of students in teachers' classes for physical school. The
question was asked what you would say the normal attendance number would be for physical
school. As stated by teachers, eight (8) responses said they missed less than five days while three
(3) missed more than five days and two (2) missed one or two days.

Fig 4: Teacher class attendance after the pandemic

Figure four shows the attendance of teacher class after the pandemic. The question was asked
what was your class attendance after the pandemic. As the bar chart shows six (6) responses said
there were less than five students while four (4) responses said 5-20 students and three (3) said
more than twenty students.

Analysis of Data

From Figure 1 above it showed that the majority of students said their attendance was affected
by online classes, whereas eleven (11) said no and nine (9) said maybe. So, the majority vote
showed that online classes affected their attendance.
Figure 2 made it clear to us that the attendance before the pandemic there were less missed
days, only one or two days were missed stated by 51.7% of responses while 34.5% never
missed a day and 13.8% missed more than five days. There were more students who attended
school before the pandemic and online classes.
Figure 3 explains the attendance while students were attending physical school was not that
bad too, there were eight (8) respondents which were teachers and they said students missed
less than five days. Three said students missed more than five days and two said students
missed one or two days.
Figure 4 above shows the attendance after the pandemic where there were less students
attending after the pandemic while four (4) respondents said 5-20 students attended classes
and three (3) said there were more than twenty students.

Discussions of Findings

While it was investigated that the students of Form four attendance were affected during the
pandemic, based on the research data it appears that this statement is true. Figure 1- It tells us
that students didn’t attend classes as much as they would because of the online schooling and
pandemic. We both expected this since we both experienced this as students and even hearing
concerns of our peers. Figure 2 Before the pandemic the students missed less days, both can
relate to this since the pandemic hadn’t been announced yet, so school attendance was mostly
like that Figure 3 – Physical school attendance had less absences compared to online schooling
have way more. We can relate to understand this because we all were eager to attend physical
classes rather than online schooling since we had been home for so long. Figure 4 – After the
pandemic the students had more attendances than online classes. It was the same for us since
when we started back school, we barely missed a day. This was because of the outcome of all
students after the online schooling which most found difficult.

Conclusion

After choosing this topic out of interest and concern we then sent out numerous questionnaires
and with hard work and commitment to put together this SBA the data proved that virtual
classes did in fact affect the student's attendance and performance in form four of St. Joseph
Secondary. It showed us that student's attendance was way better than it was during their
online schooling, in the physical classes there were more students that attended than the online
schoolings and that being said we both will conclude this SBA.
