3.2.- Drift
The displacements due to lateral forces obtained from SAP2000 were used to compute the drift at every
level and compared with the maximum drift limit of 2% of the height. Full story height and inter-story
height drift were revised.

For this project, I-shaped members were used for beams and columns, and material properties of steel
for ASTM 572 are shown in table 13.
As detailed in the Provisions, for SMF in chapter E, section E3.5, the sections to use in beams and columns
of SMF must be highly ductile members by evaluating the width to thickness ratios (λ) of the webs and
flanges of the sections with the limits of width to thickness (λhd) detailed in table D1.1 of the Provisions.
The W-shaped members selected were evaluated using following formulas.
For flanges:

Table 17. Nominal strength for compression
The nominal strength for flexure Mn was obtained following chapter F of the Specification, section F2,
verifying the limits of yielding and lateral torsional buckling. For columns the length between points that
are either braced against lateral displacement of the compression flange or braced against twist of the
cross section (Lb) of the member is the length between the top-face and bottom-face of the beams of the
lower and upper story of the story under analysis. For the beams, Lb can be taken as the length between
secondary beams connected to the beam being designed, because the secondary beams retrain the
displacement of the flange, preventing a lateral torsional buckling. Equations used in this project are
detailed below:

Although the weld connections does not form part of the design of this project, it is important to mention
the following considerations:
All internal forces between elements of the beam and columns shall be transferred through welds.
Weld access holes are required to create enough spaces between the beam flange and column,
to do the complete joint penetration weld on the flange of the beam.
Complete joint penetration weld (CJP) is used to connect the flanges and web of the beam to the
column.
Complete join penetration weld (CJP) is used to connect the flanges and web of the column to the
continuity plates and panel zone reinforcement.
Additional plug holes welding is required to connect the panel zone reinforcement to the column
web.

The capacity of the column is insufficient to account for the demands after the formation of all plastic
hinges on the beam, so the column must be redesigned. A column W36x487 was chosen, and checked
following the same procedure as done in 4.2 and 4.3.
