MOCK EXAM (FOR PRACTICE ONLY)

COURSE: MAAE 2202 CD FACILITATOR NAME: Mikhail Chizhov

It is most beneficial to you to write this mock final UNDER EXAM CONDITIONS. This means:
• Complete the mock final in 3 hour(s).
• Work on your own and attempt every question.
• Keep your notes and textbook closed.

After the time limit, go back over your work with a different colour or on a separate piece of paper and
try to do the questions you are unsure of. Record your ideas in the margins to remind yourself of what
you were thinking when you take it up at PASS.

The purpose of this mock exam is to give you practice answering questions in a timed setting and to help
you to gauge which aspects of the course content you know well, and which are in need of further
development and review. Use this mock exam as a learning tool in preparing for the actual exam.

Please note:

 Complete the mock exam before attending the take-up session. During the session you can work
with other students to review your work.

 Often, there is not enough time to review the entire exam in the PASS workshop. Decide which
questions you most want to review – the Facilitator may ask students to vote on which
questions they want to discuss in detail.

 Facilitators will not distribute an answer key for mock exams . The Facilitator’s role is to help
students work together to compare and assess the answers they have. If you are not able to
attend the PASS workshop, you can work alone or with others in the class.

 PASS worksheets are designed as a study aid only for use in PASS workshops. Worksheets may
contain errors, intentional or otherwise. It is up to the student to verify the information
contained within by attending the PASS workshop.

Good Luck writing the Mock Exam!!

MOCK EXAM (FOR PRACTICE ONLY)
COURSE: MAAE 2202 CD FACILITATOR NAME: Mikhail Chizhov

Instructions:
 This exam consists of 5 question and 6 total pages.
 Attempt each question and show your work.
 Non-programming scientific calculator use only.

1. Static Indeterminate Structure

A 0.925 in diameter by 16ft long steel rod is

stress free initially and attached using rigid
supports. The normal stress is limited to 17 ksi
in the rod and the shear stress in the bolt must
be limited to 45 ksi. For steel, E = 29 000 ksi and
α = 6.6 * 10-6/oF.
Figure 1. [1]

Determine the following:

a. The temperature decrease that can be safely accommodated by the rod based on the allowable
normal stress.
b. Minimum required diameter for the bolt at A using the temperature decrease found in part a.

2. Beam Deflections
6 kips/ft
4 kips/ft

The simply supported beam to the right consists of

a steel I-beam (E = 30 000 ksi and I = 1020 in 4).
Determine the following: 12 ft 9 ft
a. The vertical deflection of the beam at A.
b. The vertical deflection of the beam at B. Figure 2. [1]
c. The slope of the beam at A.

3. Beam Stress

A W360 x 72 steel beam (Figure 4, E = 200 GPa) is

loaded as shown in Figure 3. Timber support at B has a
cross-section area of 15 000 mm2 and E = 15 GPa.
Determine the following:

a. The reactions at support A, B, and C.

b. The maximum bending stress in the beam.

4. Buckling

The column in Figure 5 has a rectangular cross section and supports an

axial load of P. The base is fixed and pinned at the top as shown. The
parameters are L = 55 in., b = 0.5 in., h = 0.750 in., and E = 11 000 ksi.

Determine the following:

a. Critical Buckling Load in x-y frame.

b. Critical Buckling Load in x-z frame.
c. Determine the ratio b/h for which the Critical Buckling Load would
become the same for case a and b.

5. Shear Stress and

Torsion

The assembly to the right consists of a solid 80 mm

diameter bronze (G = 50 GPa, Segment 1), connected to
a flange at B to steel segments 2 and 3 (G = 90 GPa).
The flange is connected by four bolts located on a 120-
mm diameter circle (Figure 7). The allowable shear
stress of the bolts is 90 MPa, and friction effects in the flange can be neglected.

Determine the following: Figure 6. [1]

a. The allowable torque TC that can be applied at C without

exceeding the capacity of the bolted flange connection.
b. The maximum shear stress magnitude in bronze segment
(1).
c. The maximum shear stress magnitude in segment 3.
