Answer all Questions from Part – A and Part – B
The figures in the right-hand margin indicate marks.
Part-A

Q1. Answer all questions: [2 x 5 = 10]

a) Explain cosine direction using appropriate example and equations.
b) Write the differences between failure due to fracture and failure due to yielding.
c) Define neutral axis for a beam cross-section. Show the neutral axis of a rectangular beam of height h
and breadth b.
d) Write down the assumptions considered for analyzing curved beam section.
e) What do you mean by strain rosette? Write the types of strain rosette with figure.

Part-B

Q.2. Answer all questions:

(a) Derive the strain displacement relations for a 3D structure. Write down the boundary conditions also.

[4+1]
(b) Derive the Airy’s Stress function and its use in solving the plane strain problem. [3+2]
Q.3 Answer all questions:
(a) The minor compressive principal stress on a steel element is 20kN/m2. The yield point of steel is
500kN/m2. Find the major principal stress at which the material will fail using: (i) Maximum Strain
Theory, (ii) Maximum Distortion Energy Theory
[2.5+2.5]
(b) Perform a graphical comparative study of the different theories of failure. [5]
Q.4 Answer any two questions:
(a) Derive the equation for stress at any point on an arbitrary beam structure. Also derive the equation of
neutral axis for the same. [2.5+2.5]

(b) Considering a beam of arbitrary shape, find the stress on the beam for unsymmetrical bending.
[5]

(c) Find the stresses at points A,B,C and D for a 2m cantilever I-section under P1 = 1000 kg load and P2
= 707 kg load. P1 is acting at an angle of 450 with y axis and P2 is acting at an angle of 300 with y axis.
P1 is acting at a distance 1m from the support and P2 is acting at a distance 2m from the support. Centre
to centre distance between the flanges is 50cm, width of flanges is 18cm, thickness of web is 0.92 cm and
thickness of flange is 1.4 cm.
[5]

Q.5 Answer any two questions:

(a) The circular crane hook of cross-sectional diameter 12cm is carrying a load of a 15 tonne along the
centroidal axis. Find the circumferential stress on the inside and outside fibers. The inner radius of the
hook from the centroid is 7cm. [5]

(b) How is curved beam different from straight beam? Explain with an example. What do you mean by
eccentricity? [2+1+1]
(c) The dimensions of a 20000 kg crane hook are shown in figure. Find circumferential stresses σD and σC
on the inside and outside fibres respectively at the cross-section CD. [5]

Q.6 Answer any two questions:

(a) What are the factors on which endurance limit depends on? Explain all the factors. Write down the
expression for cyclic stress. [2+2+1]
(b) Write short notes on stress concentration in an object. Elaborate with the help of a suitable diagram.
[5]
(c) The readings of a 450 strain rosette are ϵ0 = 100*10-6, ϵ45 = 200 *10-6 and ϵ90 = 900*10-6. Find the
magnitude of the principal strains in plane of the rosette. [5]
