Assignment #3
BET-MT2 Prof. Bondoc

Operations And Cutting Tools

1. Facing: Facing is used to make a flat surface at the end of the work piece. The work part
should be rotating and the implied feed should be radial.
Cutting Tool Used: Single Point Cutting Tool

2. Center Drilling: Drilling the center part of the material by feeding in the cutting tool.
Cutting Tool Used: Center Drill

3. Straight Turning: is the process of reducing the work diameter to a specific dimension
as the carriage moves the tool along the work.
Cutting Tool Used: Single Point Cutting Tool

4. Taper Turning: Like contour turning the tool is not fed parallel to the axis of rotation of
the work part. The tool is fed at an angle. This turning operation gives a conical and
taper cylindrical shape.
Cutting Tool Used: Single Point Cutting Tool

5. Grooving: The term grooving usually applies to a process of forming a narrow cavity of

a certain depth, on a cylinder, cone, or a face of the part. The groove shape, or at least a
significant part of it, will be in the shape of the cutting tool.
Cutting Tool Used: Grooving Tool

6. Chamfering: Only the cutting edge is used at the corner of  cylindrical shapes which is
used for stress relieving of the workpiece.
Cutting Tool Used: Chamfer Tool

7. Threading: Thread cutting on the lathe is a process that produces a helical ridge of

uniform section on the workpiece. This is performed by taking successive cuts with
a threading toolbit the same shape as the thread form required.
Cutting Tool Used: Threading Tool
