Do the following exercises on pages 110 and 111 of the original source (pages 11 and
12 of the material of unit 2):
1. Do exercises 2, 3, 4 and 8.
2) Answer the questions:
A. What culture is it about?
It’s about the culture of Native American Indians
B. what has happened to their languages? Why?
Many of their languages disappeared because the colonizing Europeans forced
the native children to speak English.
C. What is the purpose of the Enduring Voices Project and the Salish school?
The purpose of the EVP and Salish school is to save, conserve and pass on the
languages that are dying out.

The sentences whit the author’s opinion are 2, 3 and 5, because some words that mark
some feeling about the topic, such as “a terrible part of story”, “but the good news”,
“an excellent example”

2. Mark the linking expressions in the text and explain what they express:

Addition: “and” this linking expression is used to add more information.

Contrast: “However” this linking expression is used to add information


that will contrast what is already there

Consequence/result: “as a result” this linking expression is used to


indicate that something had a certain result

3. Find two examples of passive voice: one in the present and one in the past.
Explain the use of the passive voice.

Present: “One ancient language which is spoken by the Northern Paiute tribe
has more than two hundred speakers”
“Their language is currently spoken by about 50 people who are aged
over 75 years”
Past: “The Indian tribes were moved to reservations”
“A lot of their children were taken away to boarding school and these
children were taught to speak English”.

4. Find 4 phrasal verbs. Explain their meaning in this context.

Gave up: abandon something, in this case, using the old tribal language.
Dying out: something that stop to exist, in this case, an old tribal
language.
Pick up: recollecting something, in this case, a pieces of language.
Set up: organize, build something, in this case, a school.
