Welcome to Portugal!
If you are reading this guide, I presume you either are in Portugal or looking to come
shortly. Here is a list of things to make your stay easier:
https://bit.ly/find-tdf
1) Drive from Lisbon airport. It takes about 1.5h. You can get really cheap rentals
here: https://www.check24.de, or just use any agency at the airport. We recommend
taking the highway until after the Setubal area, and then you can choose to take the
scenic routes (and avoid tolls). If you drive straight down from Grandola, you’ll take a
dirt road for a few kilometers, it’s the shortest most scenic route, but you can of
course also just take the highway.
2) Take a train - there are 4 trains per day from Lisbon Sete-Rios to Ermidas-Sado,
10min drive from TDF, use https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en to book your ticket
and find time, and ask in the group to arrange pick up.

research, contact your respective embassy in the country and / or consult with an immigration

ENTERING PORTUGAL
To enter Portugal, you may need a passport and/or a visa, depending on the
country you live in. Citizens from the European Community don’t need a Visa for
entering Portugal. Portugal is also a signatory to the 1995 Schengen Agreement.
Passports
Passports must be valid for up to six months (depending on your nationality) and
are required by all, except for European Union nationals and nationals of Iceland,
Liechtenstein, Malta, Norway, and Switzerland holding valid national ID cards.
British, Australian, Canadian, American, and Japanese citizens need a valid
passport.

Essential travel has been permitted and we’ve issued letters to several OASA
members to prove that they are entering Portugal with a determined purpose (to
become part of a rural development project in Alentejo. Although we can’t
guarantee, so far all members who wanted to travel to Portugal were able to.
Generally the screening is done upon boarding the flight. So you wouldn’t be turned
around after landing in Portugal.
Portugal is a member of the European Union and is also part of the Schengen Area.
As such, if you are a European Union citizen or if you are a citizen of one of the countries in
the Schengen Area, you do not need to apply for a visa (however, there’s a separate
procedure for becoming a resident. First step is to get registered at the municipality -
câmara - and get your REGISTO DE CIDADÃO DA UNIÃO EUROPEIA - CERTIFICADO)
● United States
● Canada, Australia
● New Zealand
Portugal has specific agreements with these countries to allow their citizens to remain in
Portugal for 90 days within 6 months without the need for a visa to enter Portugal
If you are a digital nomad and a travel visa is not enough, Portugal is one of the many
countries in Europe that grant visas for independent or freelance workers.
Here is a glance at the core characteristics of the types of suitable Portugal visas for these
purposes.
While it is not expressly called a digital nomad visa as far as official immigration papers and
procedures are concerned, the Portugal national visa can broadly be divided into two
categories. Which category you fall into will depend on your intended length of stay in the
country.

Golden visas:
They are issued to those individuals that bring a large capital into the country or
create a number of jobs. At the moment the minimum investment is 250 k in an art
project or 350 k in a rural area company.
TDF will not qualify for applying for such visas, as it’s a shared investment among
members. Unless you would bring that amount of money as investment, in which
case we could investigate how to apply for a Golden visa.

More details on the official website:

This is the standard residence permit for most employees working in Portugal. The
permit is valid for one year and can also be renewed for up to five years, after
which the holder can apply for permanent Portuguese residence.

This kind of visa might apply to full members of a newly established TDF company /
cooperative in Portugal. However, we would need to consult with a lawyer and get
all details on request.
If you have a particular interest in getting one of these visas instead of using a travel
visa, you can send us a message and we will try to recommend a lawyer that can assist
you with the paperwork.
