NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management
Operating Instructions General Safety Precautions

General Safety Precautions

when Using NACOS
NACOS combines nautical data from the planning stage right up to automatic track control, and displays
these data in context at various workplaces.
This increases the safety of ship-handling and reduces the workload of the bridge personnel.
However, the use of NACOS does not release the operator from the obligation to handle the ship in
accordance with the rules of good seamanship, i.e. to monitor the course, speed and position of the ship;
the operation of the NACOS must be monitored too.

Even when NACOS is being used, non-observance of the safety

precautions can lead to unnoticed deviation from the planned
track, thus causing danger to shipping.

When NACOS is being used, the following points must be observed:

1. NACOS may be used and operated only by qualified personnel who have been trained to operate
the system.
2. Operators must continually keep themselves informed about the nautical situation of the ship and
about the status of the NACOS.
3. Alarms (visual alarms, acoustic alarms, messages) provide information that is relevant to safety.
NACOS alarms relating to nautical situations and to faults in the NACOS and in the sensors and/or
actuators connected to it must be observed.
When alarms occur, the operator must immediately obtain a clear overview of their causes, the
NACOS system status and possible reactions of the system, and - if necessary - must immediately
take all of the necessary actions for avoidance of possible danger.
Only then may alarms be cancelled.
4. Before electronic charts fed into the NACOS are used, they must be checked by the operator to
make certain that they are in agreement with the official charts.
5. The courses steered by NACOS must be continuously checked by the operator with regard to traffic
safety and taking account of the official charts.

Notes about NACOS functions (for further details, see individual documents of the NACOS equipment
items):
• Compensation for drift takes place in particular modes only.
• Position data are dependent on the accuracy and proper functioning of the selected position sensor.
• Only position sensors which output position data in the geographical reference system WGS 84 via
an interface NMEA 0183 V. 2.0 or higher or an interface as per IEC 1162-1 may be connected. By
prior agreement, an interface as per NMEA 0183 with a version smaller than 2.0 is also possible if
the values are output in the reference system WGS 84, including status information.
• ARPA target data are directly dependent upon the accuracy and proper functioning of the selected
speed sensor and the gyro compass.

NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management 1 General
Operating Instructions 1.1 Display of the Text Message

1 General

If the NACOS wishes to draw the operator’s attention to a situation which might make it necessary for
him to intervene, it generates an alarm. An alarm consists of a text message which, in most cases, is
supplemented by an acoustic signal.
This document provides an overview of the alarms which occur on the various NACOS components, and
the associated operating procedure 1). In Section 2, all text messages of the alarms are described in
alphabetical order. Details of their causes and information about how to remove the causes are given in
the Operating Instructions of the corresponding NACOS components.
In addition, Section 3 lists the electrical alarm signals which can be output by NACOS components to the
Bridge Alarm System BAS40M, to the Watch Alarm System WAS40M 2) or to external alarm systems. The
display functions of the Bridge Alarm System BAS40M that are available at the workplaces of the
NACOS, and the operating functions of the Watch Alarm System WAS40M, are also contained in that list.
Supplementary to the subject of alarms, Section 4 describes how the NACOS reacts to status changes
of the navigation sensors for course, speed and position.

1.1 Display of the Text Message

For each message, the display on which it appears is defined (e.g. a radar alarm message on all radar
displays, a TRACKPILOT message on the TRACKPILOT master only, an operator error message on the
unit being operated, a critical alarm message on all displays).
As far as the display is concerned, a distinction must be drawn between
- the RADARPILOT, RADAR and MULTIPILOT in Radar Mode on the one hand (collectively called
"RADARPILOT" in the following) and
- the MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT in the Chart and Conning Modes on the other
hand (if, in the following, these components are mentioned without any statement of the mode, the
information refers to the Chart and Conning Modes):
On the RADAR and on the RADARPILOT, the messages appear as a short, one-line text in the message
window (above the menu). If another message occurs before the first one has been acknowledged, the
new message appears additionally either
- in the message window (the older message is then displayed above the message window) or
- above the message window,
depending on the priority of the new message. In this way, the last six non-acknowledged messages can
be displayed on the RADAR or on the RADARPILOT.
On the MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT, the occurrence of an alarm causes the
alarm list to be opened. In this list, the same message or a similar one appears as on the RADARPILOT,
together with further information - page 9. This message is marked (i.e. displayed in inverted form).
Furthermore, when an alarm occurs, the small red lamp above the ACK ALARM key on the RADAR-
PILOT and MULTIPILOT lights up (the function does not exist on the earlier keyboard).
☞ In the Alarm Settings menu, you can define by means of the Buzzer On function whether the
acoustic signal is to be sounded or not when one of the alarms marked with the symbol in
Section 2 occurs. This setting acts throughout the entire system on all alarms marked with the
symbol .

1)
In 1997/98, a new keyboard which can be identified by the presence of the SCC key was introduced for the RADAR, RADARPILOT and
MULTIPILOT. These Operating Instructions refer to this keyboard. In those cases where there are differences when the keyboard supplied
previously is used, this is described under the heading Earlier keyboard.
2)
Both of these are an optional part of the NACOS. For the procedure of these systems, see their Operating Instructions.

1.2 Behaviour when an Alarm Occurs Operating Instructions

1.2 Behaviour when an Alarm Occurs

1. Switching off the acoustic signal (if there is one) 1):

- On the RADARPILOT: Press the ACK ALARM (= Acknowledge alarm) key 2),
2)
- on the MULTIPILOT: Press the ACK ALARM key , or press the Acknowledge button in the
alarm list,
- on the CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT: Press the Acknowledge button in the alarm list.
2. Immediately, obtain a clear idea of the alarm causes, the system status and possible system reac-
tions, and, if necessary, immediately take all necessary measures to counteract any possible
dangers.
3. Removing the cause of the alarm: If the alarm has occurred due to a cause that can be removed,
that cause must be removed as quickly as possible; see also Section 2.
Many alarms disappear when the cause disappears. Acknowledgement is then unnecessary.
4. The alarm must be acknowledged if the situation allows or requires such acknowledgement:
- On the RADARPILOT: Press the ACK ALARM key 2).
As a result, the alarm shown in the message window is acknowledged.
- On the MULTIPILOT: Press the ACK ALARM key 2) or press the Acknowledge button in the
alarm list.
On the CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT: Press the Acknowledge button in the alarm list.
As a result, the marked alarm is acknowledged, the alarm message disappears from the alarm
list and the red lamp goes dark. If an alarm other than the one that is currently marked is to be
acknowledged, the corresponding alarm must be clicked beforehand. If there is no further alarm
listed, this also switches off the display of the alarm list.
☞ Alarms can be acknowledged only on the units on which they appear.
☞ If the operating procedure is performed in such a way that the cause of the alarm is removed
(e.g. by increasing an alarm limit value), there is then no need to switch off the acoustic signal
and to acknowledge the alarm.
☞ Some alarms cannot be acknowledged; i.e. after pressing of the ACK ALARM key 2) or the
Acknowledge button, the alarm or the list immediately appears again. These special features
are mentioned in Section 2.
☞ If an alarm occurs on several units, acknowledgement on one of these units is sufficient.

1)
From the beginning of 1999 onwards, the radar systems have been equipped with a signal input by means of which an external system,
e.g. the bridge alarm system, can switch off the acoustic signals of the alarms occurring on all ATLAS systems situated on the bridge.

1 General NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management
1.4 Operation of External Alarm Systems from the NACOS Workplaces Operating Instructions

1.4 Operation of External Alarm Systems from the NACOS Workplaces

The following remarks apply to the case in which the NACOS is equipped with a Bridge Alarm System
BAS40M and a Watch Alarm System WAS40M.

Display and Acknowledgement of Alarms of the Bridge Alarm System

In the case of particular 1) alarms that are output by the Bridge Alarm System, the alarm message
BRIDGE ALARM SYSTEM appears on the MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT, together
with a statement of the alarm cause. On the RADARPILOT, the alarm message BRIDGE ALARM SYST
appears.
By acknowledgement of the alarm on one of the components mentioned, the Bridge Alarm System too is
acknowledged.
☞ An overview of the alarms that are transmitted by the Bridge Alarm System is available on the
MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT in the form of the Data Display External Alarms
(switch off the Menu Display, select Status & Ext. Alarms in the display title button). Alarms which
have occurred but have not yet been acknowledged are displayed there with a red background,
acknowledged ones with a green background.

Alarm Generation by Means of the Electrical Alarm-Outputs of the NACOS Components

The NACOS components’ electrical alarm-outputs described in Section 3 are connected to the inputs of
the Bridge Alarm System.
Consequently, after one of these signals has been emitted and an acknowledgement has not occurred,
the Bridge Alarm System - after suitable delay times - can pass a group alarm on to the Watch Alarm
System WAS40M and appropriate continuation of the alarm process can be ensured.

Driving of the Watch Alarm System WAS40M

Every operating action using a key on the NACOS sends a signal to the Watch Alarm System; this signal
has the same effect as operation of the watch alarm pushbutton. Therefore, as long as an operating
action is performed on the NACOS within the intervals required by the Watch Alarm System, there is no
need to operate the watch alarm pushbutton.

1) For each alarm that can be output by the Bridge Alarm System, it is decided at service level whether the alarm message BRIDGE ALARM
SYSTEM or BRIDGE ALARM SYST. is to be triggered on the NACOS components mentioned, and whether this occurs there together with
an acoustic signal.

of 30 seconds remains for the acknowledgement.
☞ With by far the majority of NACOS installations, this alarm is inactive, because there the watch
alarm is reset with the Dead Man Alarm Trigger; see page 41, Dead Man Al arm Tr i gger , case A.
Normally, the alarm is activated only if there is no watch alarm system installed (which, if there
is a NACOS, does not occur very often).
☞ Furthermore, the following configuration is possible: The message appears 30 seconds before
triggering of the Dead Man Alarm Trigger. An acoustic signal does not occur.
DEPTH ALARM
The water depth measured by the echosounder is less than the value that was set in the Alarm
Settings > Depth alarm menu on the NCC.
DEPTH ALARM Depth xxx.xm Limit yym, check chart and sounder
ECDIS: DEPTH ALARM
The water depth measured by the echosounder is xxx.x m, and is therefore less than the DEPTH
ALARM value of yy m that was set in the Alarm Settings > Chart Alarms menu on the MULTIPILOT
etc.
DRIFT ALARM
DRIFT ALARM Limit exceeded, check speed sensor, increase limit.
The Drift Alarm value that was set in the pilot menu TRACKPILOT has been exceeded; for correct
track-keeping, a larger compensation angle is needed.
☞ For as long as the Drift Alarm value continues to be exceeded, an acknowledged alarm is not
repeated. Even after acknowledgement, the drift angle contained in the actual course is limited
for the TRACKPILOT to the Drift Alarm setting.
Remedy: Increase the Drift Alarm value or switch over to Heading Mode or to manual steering.
ECDIS: APPROACH. WP
APPROACHING WAYPOINT [Waypoint] WOP [xx : yy min]
The ECDIS has detected that the next Wheel Over Point (before the stated waypoint) will probably
have been reached in xx minutes and yy seconds.
☞ When the TRACKPILOT is being operated in Track Mode, then instead the alarm WAYPOINT
APPROACHING generated by the TRACKPILOT appears on the TRACKPILOT master in this
situation.

ECDIS:COURSE LIMIT
COURSE LIMIT EXCEEDED Off course xx.x ° Limit yy °
The actual course differs by xx.x° from the course defined by the System Track, and therefore
exceeds the Course Limit of yy° that was set in the Alarm Settings > Chart Alarms menu on the
MULTIPILOT etc.
☞ When the TRACKPILOT is being operated in Track Mode, then instead the alarm COURSE
LIMIT generated by the TRACKPILOT appears on the TRACKPILOT master in this situation.
☞ Acknowledgement cancels the message even if the Limit continues to be exceeded. An
acknowledged alarm is not repeated as long as the Course Limit continues to be exceeded.
Remedy:
- Increase the Course Limit or
- wait until the TRACKPILOT has reduced the course error below the limit or
- switch over to manual steering.
ECDIS: DEPTH ALARM
DEPTH ALARM Depth xxx.xm Limit yym, check chart and sounder
The water depth measured by the echosounder is xxx.x m and is thus less than the DEPTH ALARM
value of yy m that was set in the Alarm Settings > Chart Alarms menu on the MULTIPILOT etc.
ECDIS: TRACK LIMIT
TRACK LIMIT EXCEEDED XTD xxx m Limit yyy m, navigate with care.
The Cross Track Distance is xxx m and thus exceeds the Track Limit of yyy m that was set in the
Alarm Settings menu on the MULTIPILOT etc.
☞ Acknowledgement cancels the message even if the Limit continues to be exceeded. An
acknowledged alarm is not repeated as long as the Track Limit continues to be exceeded.
Remedy: Increase the Track Limit (if this is permitted by the nautical situation) or steer the ship
manually.
ELEMENT OVERFLOW
The map/track element can no longer be accepted, because the maximum possible number of
elements of this type have already been input.
Acknowledge with any key; without acknowledgement, the message disappears after about 10
seconds.
Remedy: Divide the map up.
END OF TRACK
END OF TRACK Accept to select Course Mode.
The ship sailing in Track Mode has passed the last waypoint of the track being used by the TRACK-
PILOT.
☞ Acknowledgement causes a switch to Course Mode; the ship’s course has to be set manually.
FAULT xx AIS: (Description)
This alarm indicates that there is a technical fault which is impairing, or could impair, the functioning
of the AIS transponder (xx = number of the fault).
☞ If such an alarm is occurring frequently or if it persists for some time, the service organisation
should be informed of this.

- or -
The Ship’s Interface has failed.
☞ On the RADARPILOT, RADAR and MULTIPILOT in Radar Mode: The video display remains in
the switched-on state. A switch-over to the Head Up Display Mode takes place automatically.
ARPA functions are no longer available. Tracks and maps are not displayed. If the cause is not
corrected within 30 seconds, all plots of the TM plotting aid or all plots of the tracked ARPA
targets are deleted.
On the MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT and CONNINGPILOT in Chart and Conning Modes: If the
North Up or Course Up Display Mode is switched on and the GYRO FAULT alarm occurs, a
switch-over to Head Up and Relative Motion Mode takes place automatically. For as long as the
alarm exists, the display of the radar video and of the radar targets is suppressed. The direction
of the own ship symbol is no longer displayed.
Remedy: Check the compass, check the Ship’s Interface.
GYRO VALID
GYRO VALID Check/accept gyro value.
The compass is again transmitting valid data. The course transfer to the NACOS must be checked
by comparison of the heading displays on the compass and on one of the NACOS displays, and
must be corrected if necessary (in the Basic settings > Set gyro menu).

OBJECT OF INTEREST
OBJECT OF INTEREST [object class and supplement]
A) With nearby as the supplement:
The Guard Sector is touching one or more objects belonging to the specified object class, i.e.
if the course and speed remain unchanged, these objects might be run over within the time or
distance entered under Objects of Interest in the menu Alarm Settings > Chart Alarms on the
MULTIPILOT etc.
- or -
Own ship is situated on an object belonging to the object class mentioned.
B) With On Track as the supplement:
The System Track (with the width defined by the programmed Track Limit) is touching one or
more of the objects specified in A).
☞ If several cases of the above-mentioned conditions occur at the same time, the following limita-
tions exist:
- Only the three cases that occurred first will generate an alarm.
- For each object class, only the alarm for the case that occurred first will appear.
When one of these alarms is acknowledged, the next OBJECT OF INTEREST alarm can
appear.
Acknowledgement: Only on the CHARTPILOT and on the MULTIPILOT in Chart and Conning
mode.
☞ An acknowledged alarm is not repeated while the conditions that led to the alarm continue to
exist. Only when these conditions no longer exist does renewed occurrence of the above-
mentioned conditions in the same object class cause an alarm message again.

PERFORM. MONITOR (= Performance monitor)
The Performance Monitor is running.
Acknowledgement is not possible.
Remedy: Switch off the Performance Monitor by means of the Utilities > Perf. monitor menu.
PILOT DATA IN USE
The selected parameter might already have been defined by the Pilot Data.
Acknowledge with any key; in spite of the message, data that have been input are accepted, and
for the present track segment these data overwrite the preplanned data.
Remedy: Switch off Pilot Data, repeat the input.
PLOT xx ABORTED
The permissible time for inputting a plot marker has been exceeded. The plot cannot be continued;
the marker of the designated target is deleted.
☞ This message appears 5 minutes after the message PLOT xx NO UPDATE unless a plot
marker has been input.

PLOT xx NO UPDATE
For the designated target, there has been no update for 10 minutes. In order to continue the plot, a
new plot marker must now be set.
POS.STATUS CHANGED
POSITION STATUS CHANGED Accept or change position sensor.
The selected position sensor has performed an internal status-change (e.g. from DGPS to GPS) or
has changed the receiving process (e.g. from DECCA to LORAN).
☞ The acoustic signal does not appear if a change-over from GPS to DGPS takes place and no
Position Offset has been set.
POSITION DRIFT 1)
POSITION DRIFT Check speed and position sensor, accept if OK. 1)
Since the beginning of the Position Drift computation, a difference has built up in Track Mode
between the dead reckoning position and the position given by the position sensor, and this differ-
ence is greater than a limit value which depends on the Track Limit 2).
☞ Acknowledgement restarts the Position Drift calculation with a difference of 0.
Remedy:
- Select a more accurate position sensor or speed sensor.
- Select ESTIMATED POSITION (Dead Reckoning).
- Switch over to Course Mode or Heading Mode.
- Increase the Track Limit.2)

1)
This alarm can only appear if activated on service level (required by BSH and DNV-W1).
2)
In the case of ships with DNV-W1 approval, the limit value depends not on the Track Limit but on the selected speed sensor and on the
selected position sensor.

POSITION FIX
POSITION FIX Check and accept, increase track limit.
A position jump (e.g. Satellite Fix or Position Adjust) exceeding the Track Limit (or, if the Track Limit
is set to a low value, a position jump exceeding a value which depends on the sensor type) has been
detected.
☞ By acknowledgement, the new position is accepted.
Remedy: Increasing the Track Limit increases tolerance with regard to position jumps and
strengthens the filtering of the received position-data.
POSITION INVALID
POSITION INVALID Select ESTIMATED or another position sensor.
The selected position sensor is not transferring valid position-data.
Remedy: Check the position sensor; if necessary, switch over to ESTIMATED POSITION or change
to some other position sensor.
☞ After failure of the selected position sensor, the system behaves in different ways depending on
the relevant setting at service level:
A) At service level, the automatic switch-over of the position sensor was activated:
When the POSITION INVALID alarm occurs, a switch-over to ESTIMATED POSITION
takes place (i.e. the position is determined by dead reckoning).
When the position sensor is again transmitting valid data, the POSITION VALID alarm
appears and the menu Basic settings > Posit. sensor opens.
B) At service level, the automatic switch-over of the position sensor was not activated:
If the position sensor is no longer transmitting valid data, it is labelled as being invalid; the
position is determined by dead reckoning (a switch-over to ESTIMATED POSITION does
not take place). If, after 3 minutes, the position sensor is still not transmitting valid data, the
POSITION INVALID alarm appears.
When the position sensor is again transmitting valid data, it is labelled again as being valid
and its data are used again, even if they differ significantly from the system position (dead-
reckoned) that is then valid. The alarm POSITION VALID appears.
POSITION STATUS CHANGED Accept or change position sensor.
POS.STATUS CHANGED
The selected position sensor has performed an internal status-change (e.g. from DGPS to GPS) or
the receiving process has changed (e.g. from DECCA to LORAN).
☞ The acoustic signal does not appear if a change-over from GPS to DGPS takes place and no
Position Offset has been set.

POSITION VALID
POSITION VALID Check and accept position sensor.
The selected position sensor is again transmitting valid data. (When failure of the position sensor
occurred, a switch-over to ESTIMATED POSITION took place automatically - see the POSITION

☞ After acknowledgement, the Sensor Settings > Position Sensor menu appears with a state-
ment of the position now being transferred from the position sensor and the deviation of this
position from the position that is currently being used in the system.
- If the position displayed can be accepted from the nautical point of view, exit from the
menu without alterations. As a result, there is a change from ESTIMATED POSITION back
to the position sensor. If the position sensor had also been selected as the speed sensor,
it is thus also reselected as the speed sensor (see also the SPEED INVALID alarm).
- If, from the nautical point of view, the position displayed cannot be accepted, some other
position sensor or ESTIMATED POSITION must be selected.

Mode, the System Track must be loaded on the new TRACKPILOT master also.
Acknowledge with any key; without acknowledgement, the message disappears after about 10
seconds.
REDUCED RADIUS
REDUCED RADIUS Use reduced radius or select Course/Heading Mode.
Track Mode is switched on, but the Set Radius is too large to allow the Next Track to be reached.
For this reason, the TRACKPILOT has reduced the radius to such an extent that the course change
at the next waypoint can be performed.
Remedy: Switch over to Course Mode or to Heading Mode.
ROT LIMIT EXCEEDED 1)
ROT LIMIT EXCEEDED Check gyro compass, switch to backup gyro. 1)
The rate of turn computed from the change in the received heading signal is greater than is possible
on the basis of the ship’s dynamics as parameterised in the system. From this, it can be concluded
that the compass or the transfer of the heading signal is defective.
Remedy: Check the compass.
RUDDER ERROR
RUDDER ERROR Check rudder
The rudder is not obeying the instructions from the TRACKPILOT, or is not doing so with sufficient
accuracy.
CAUTION:

1)
This alarm can only appear if activated on service level.

If this fault message is present for a long time, it is necessary to switch

over to manual steering.
Remedy: Check the steering gear.
RUDDER LIMIT
RUDDER LIMIT Accept or increase limit.
The set Rudder Limit has been reached; with this Rudder Limit, the manoeuvre cannot be performed
without a deviation.
- or -
The present rudder angle lies outside the Rudder Limit.
WARNING:
In Track Mode on ships with DNV-W1 approval, limitation by the set
Rudder Limit is ignored when a planned manoeuvre is being performed,
i.e. rudder angle settings greater than the Rudder Limit can be specified
if this is necessary for a planned manoeuvre.

☞ For as long as the limit continues to be exceeded, an acknowledged alarm is not repeated.
Remedy:
- Increase the Rudder Limit or
- wait until the rudder angle becomes less than the Rudder Limit or
- switch over to manual steering.
SAFETY CONTOUR
SAFETY CONTOUR [object class and supplement]
A) With ahead as the supplement:
The Guard Sector is touching the Safety Contour or the insufficiently deep region specified as
the object class, i.e. if the course and speed remain unchanged, these objects might be run over
within the time or distance entered under Objects of Interest in the menu Alarm Settings >
Chart Alarms on the MULTIPILOT etc.
B) With nearby as the supplement:
Same as A)
- or -
Own ship is situated in an insufficiently deep region.
C) With inside as the supplement:
Own ship is situated on the Safety Contour or in the specified insufficiently deep region.
D) With On Track as the supplement:
The System Track (with the width defined by the programmed Track Limit) is touching the
Safety Contour or the specified insufficiently deep region.
☞ If several cases of the above-mentioned conditions occur at the same time, the following limita-
tions exist:
- Only the three cases that occurred first will generate an alarm.
- For each object class, only the alarm for the case that occurred first will appear.
When one of these alarms is acknowledged, the next SAFETY CONTOUR alarm can appear.

SI SERVICE SWITCH
SHIP’S INTERFACE SERVICE SWITCH ON
The Ship’s Interface has been switched over to Service Mode; parameter programming and system
configuring are possible.
SIMULATION OFF !
The radar simulation mode must be switched off, e.g. because the radar is switched to act as the
TRACKPILOT master and the TRACKPILOT is in the activated state.
Acknowledge with any key; the message appears again after a short time if no remedy has been
applied.
Remedy: Switch off the training simulation or switch some other radar to act as the TRACKPILOT
master.
SP DEACTIVATED
SPEEDPILOT DEACTIVATED Use manual control, check SPEEDPILOT.
This alarm appears in two different situations:
A) As a result of an operating action, the SPEEDPILOT has become disconnected from the engine
control system. The message confirms that the engine is now being controlled by means of the
lever.
B) The SPEEDPILOT has been disconnected from the engine control system (engine control is
now performed using the lever) because one of the engine systems has failed or because there
is a hardware fault in the SPEEDPILOT.
- or -
An attempt has been made to activate the SPEEDPILOT, but the engine is still being operated
by means of the lever.
WARNING:
If this alarm appears, the engine must immediately be switched over to
manual control, and a check must be performed to make sure that the
manual control function is working.
Remedy: Check the hardware and the interface signals.
SP INTERFACE FAULT
SPEEDPILOT INTERFACE FAULT
This alarm appears in two different situations:
A) The propeller shaft revolution rate (and, if applicable, the pitch) is not the same as the set speed
specified by the SPEEDPILOT.
Acknowledgement: In this case, the alarm cannot be acknowledged until its cause has been
eliminated.
WARNING:
If this alarm cannot be acknowledged and the difference between the
set speed and the propeller shaft revolution rate cannot be explained on
the basis of a change that has just been made to the set speed, the
engine must immediately be switched over to manual control and a
check must be performed to make sure that the manual control function
is working.
☞ The NACOS compares the set speed signalled to the engine control system with the lever
value signalled as "implemented" by the engine control system to the NACOS. If the differ-
ence exceeds a particular value, the SPEEDPILOT INTERFACE FAULT alarm is given.
With some engine control system types, in particular circumstances a change in the set
speed is performed with such a long delay that the alarm appears even although there is
no fault.

☞ A course manoeuvre too can cause a change in the set speed for a short time, and can
therefore produce this alarm.
☞ A critical fault, namely the interruption of the signal transfer between the SPEEDPILOT and
the engine control system, likewise leads to this alarm. If the difference between the set
speed and the present lever-value cannot be explained on the basis of the timing behav-
iour of the engine control system, a fault of this kind might exist and the engine must be
switched over to manual control.
Remedy: If there is a fault, switch off the SPEEDPILOT and check the hardware and the inter-
face signals.
B) An attempt has been made to switch off the SPEEDPILOT, but the engine continues to be
controlled by the SPEEDPILOT.
WARNING:
If this alarm can be acknowledged, the engine must be switched over
immediately to manual control and a check must be performed to make
certain that the manual control function is working.
Remedy: Switch off the SPEEDPILOT, and check the hardware and the interface signals.
SP SERVICE SWITCH ON
SPEEDPILOT SERVICE SWITCH ON
The SPEEDPILOT has been switched over to Service Mode; parameter programming and system
configuring are possible.
Acknowledge with any key.
SP SPEED FAULT
SPEEDPILOT SPEED FAULT Check sensor or deactivate SPEEDPILOT.
The SPEEDPILOT is in the activated state, or an attempt is made to activate the SPEEDPILOT, and
- the speed sensor is transmitting invalid data,
- or -
- MANUAL has been selected as the speed sensor,
- or -
- the SPEEDPILOT is not receiving speed data from the Ship’s Interface.
Acknowledgement: Until the cause has been eliminated, the alarm is repeated whenever an
attempt to acknowledge it occurs.
Remedy:
- Select some other speed sensor or
- de-activate the SPEEDPILOT or
- switch off the SPEEDPILOT and check the hardware.
SPEED INVALID
SPEED INVALID Select another speed sensor.
The position sensor selected as the speed sensor is transmitting invalid data. Whether an automatic
switch-over to some other speed sensor has also taken place depends on the relevant setting at
service level:
A) If the automatic position switch-over has been activated at service level, a temporary switch-
over to DOLOG took place automatically (if the DOLOG is not transmitting valid data, a switch-
over to the second log took place; if this log too is not transmitting valid data, a switch-over to
MANUAL took place).
☞ As soon as the position sensor is again transmitting valid data, the POSITION VALID alarm
appears. If the position sensor is then accepted as the position sensor (see the POSITION
VALID alarm), it is thus also selected again as the speed sensor.

B) If the automatic position switch-over has not be activated at service level, the speed sensor is
labelled as being invalid, but no switch-over of any kind takes place.
☞ When the position sensor is transmitting valid data again, the speed sensor is labelled as
being valid again and its data are used again.
Remedy: If necessary, select some other speed sensor.
SPEED LIMIT
SPEED LIMIT EXCEEDED Check set speed, increase limit.
The Set Speed setting is larger than the Speed Limit value that was set in the pilot menu SPEED-
PILOT.
Remedy: Reduce the Set Speed or increase the Speed Limit.
SPEED LOG STATUS CHANGED Accept or change speed sensor.
LOG STATUS CHANGED
While the TRACKPILOT is in the activated state, the log selected as the speed sensor has changed
its status, e.g. from Bottom Track to Water Track. It is transmitting valid data.
WARNING:
If the TRACKPILOT is in Course Mode or Track Mode, a course change
occurs if the drift component has changed as a result of the switch-over.

Remedy: Check what change of status is involved; if necessary, select some other speed sensor or
change to heading mode.
SPEED OUT OF RANGE
SPEED OUT OF RANGE Use add. main engine or decrease set speed.
Because of the available engine power or the present environmental conditions, the Set Speed
setting cannot be fulfilled by the ship.
Remedy: Activate a further engine or reduce the Set Speed.
SPEED SENSOR FAULT
SPEED SENSOR FAULT Accept to select Heading Mode.
The TRACKPILOT is in the activated state and the selected speed sensor is reporting incorrect data
or has failed; steering with the drift angle taken into account is not possible.
- or -
Manual Speed has been selected as the speed sensor while the TRACKPILOT is being operated in
Track Mode.
☞ Acknowledgement causes a switch-over to Heading Mode. For as long as no valid speed data
are being received, the alarm is repeated every minute.
Remedy: Select some other speed sensor, and if necessary select Course Mode or Track Mode
again.
SPEED TIMEOUT
SPEED TIMEOUT Select another speed sensor.
The selected speed sensor is no longer transmitting valid data.
Remedy: In the menu which opens after acknowledgement, select a new speed sensor. For as long

NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management 3 List of Alarm Signal Outputs
Operating Instructions 3.1 RADAR, RADARPILOT, MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT

3 List of Alarm Signal Outputs

The signals mentioned in the following are provided by the NACOS in the form of electrical contacts. If
the NACOS is equipped with the Bridge Alarm System BAS40M, then in the case of a standard installa-
tion the signals (with the exception of the Dead Man Alarm Trigger - see below) are sent there and proc-
essed appropriately.
Whether the signals are utilised in a given case, and if so, in what form, depends on the installation; a
statement about this cannot be made here. This is true in particular if a bridge alarm system other than
the BAS40M is installed.

3.1 RADAR, RADARPILOT, MULTIPILOT, CHARTPILOT

Radar Alarm
Every Radar Indicator outputs this signal if one or more of the following conditions are fulfilled:
- The Radar Transmitter selected from the Radar Indicator (as master or slave) has failed.
- The Ship’s Interface has failed.
- The PCI (Radar Interswitch) has failed.
- The TRACKPILOT has failed.
- The Radar Indicator has been configured at service level in such a way that the following events
cause the output of an electrical alarm signal and one of these events has already existed for 30 1)
seconds without being acknowledged:
. There is a system fault (message SYSTEM FAULT xxxx).
The internal monitoring system monitors the communication between the assemblies or compo-
nents of the entire system. It thus detects hardware failures as well as the absence of particular,
important interface-data.
The internal monitoring system also monitors the communication with all connected NACOS
components; therefore, their total failure or switch-off is also reported as a system fault.
. The DANGEROUS AIS TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The DANGEROUS ARPA TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The LOST AIS TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The LOST ARPA TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The GUARD ZONE TARGET (TARGET IN GUARD ZONE) alarm has been triggered.
- The Indicator has been switched off or the supply voltage to the Indicator has failed.

Dead Man Alarm Trigger

For the output of this signal, it is possible at service level to choose between two basically different
dependencies:
A) The Ship's Interface outputs this signal whenever a radar component is operated.
☞ This setting is chosen if there is a watch alarm system. This signal then has the same effect
there as operating one of the watch alarm pushbuttons, and so the watch alarm pushbuttons do
not have to be operated if an operating action has taken place in the NACOS.
B) With this signal, a watch alarm can be triggered directly. The Ship's Interface outputs this signal if
the DEAD MAN (DEAD MAN ALARM) alarm has not been acknowledged - see page 16.

1)
If the Radar Alarm signal is transmitted to an alarm system which itself generates an appropriate delay, the signal is output without a delay.

☞ This setting is selected if there is no watch alarm system.

MULTIPILOT Alarm
If one or more of the following conditions are fulfilled, the MULTIPILOT outputs this signal:
- The Radar Transceiver selected from the MULTIPILOT (as master or slave) has failed.
- The SHIP’S INTERFACE has failed.
- The PCI (Radar Interswitch) has failed.
- The TRACKPILOT has failed.
- The SPEEDPILOT has failed.
- The MULTIPILOT Computer has failed or has been reset.
- The MULTIPILOT Computer has triggered one of the following alarms:
. ECDIS: APPROACH WP (APPROACHING WAYPOINT)
. ECDIS: COURSE LIMIT (COURSE LIMIT EXCEEDED)
. ECDIS: DEPTH ALARM (DEPTH ALARM)
. GYRO FAULT
. POSITION INVALID
. POSITION TIMEOUT
. SPEED INVALID
. SPEED TIMEOUT
. ECDIS: TRACK LIMIT (TRACK LIMIT EXCEEDED)
- The MULTIPILOT has been configured at service level in such a way that the following events cause
the output of an electrical alarm signal 1):
. There is a system fault (message "SYSTEM FAULT xxxx")
The internal monitoring system monitors the communication between the assemblies or compo-
nents of the entire system. It thus detects hardware failures as well as the absence of particular,
important interface-data.
Because the internal monitoring system also monitors the communication with all connected
NACOS components, their total failure or switch-off is also reported as a system fault.
. The DANGEROUS AIS TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The DANGEROUS ARPA TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The LOST AIS TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The LOST ARPA TARGET alarm has been triggered.
. The TARGET IN GUARD ZONE (TARGET IN GUARD ZONE) alarm has been triggered.

MULTIPILOT Power Alarm

This signal is output when:
- the MULTIPILOT Indicator has been switched off or
- the supply voltage to the MULTIPILOT Indicator has failed.

1)
It can also be configured in such a way that the signal is output only when the events mentioned have already been taking place for more
than 30 seconds.

ECDIS Alarm
With the generation of the alarm USER CHART OBJECT, the CHARTPILOT or MULTIPILOT outputs this
signal additionally.
This signal is also output if the function To Alarm Panel is "ON" on the CHARTPILOT or MULTIPILOT
in the Alarm Settings menu in Chart Mode, and one of the chart alarms occurs for which the ECDIS
regulations require an on/off-switchable transfer to the central alarm panel (e.g. OBJECT OF INTEREST
and SAFETY CONTOUR).

CHARTPILOT Alarm
The SHIP’S INTERFACE outputs this signal
- if the data exchange with the CHARTPILOT Computer is not functioning properly.
The cause of this might be as follows:
. The CHARTPILOT program has not been started.
. The CHARTPILOT has been switched off.
. The CHARTPILOT Processor has been reset.
. The CHARTPILOT is defective.
- if the CHARTPILOT Computer has triggered one of the following alarms:
. ECDIS: APPROACH WP (APPROACHING WAYPOINT)
. ECDIS: COURSE LIMIT (COURSE LIMIT EXCEEDED)
. ECDIS: DEPTH ALARM (DEPTH ALARM)
. GYRO FAULT
. POSITION INVALID
. POSITION TIMEOUT
. SPEED INVALID
. SPEED TIMEOUT
. ECDIS: TRACK LIMIT (TRACK LIMIT EXCEEDED)

3.2 TRACKPILOT and SPEEDPILOT

The TRACKPILOT Electronics Unit has the following alarm outputs:

TRACKPILOT Alarm
This signal is output if:
- there is no operating unit switched to act as the TRACKPILOT master, or
- the TP GYRO FAULT (TRACKPILOT GYRO FAULT) alarm has been triggered, or
- the ASTERN SPEED alarm has been triggered, or
- a hardware fault of the TRACKPILOT Processor has been detected by the BITE (Built-In Test Equip-
ment) of the NACOS.

TRACKPILOT Power Alarm

This signal is output if:
- the TRACKPILOT Electronics Unit has been switched off, or
- the supply voltage to the TRACKPILOT Electronics Unit has failed.

TRACKPILOT System Alarm

This signal is output if:
- the TRACKPILOT alarm or
- the TRACKPILOT Power alarm has been activated.

3 List of Alarm Signal Outputs NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management
3.2 TRACKPILOT and SPEEDPILOT Operating Instructions

TRACKPILOT Programmable Alarm

At service level, it is specified which of the following reasons are to cause the output of this signal:
- The WP APPROACHING (WAYPOINT APPROACHING) alarm has been triggered.
- The WHEEL OVER POINT or WOP EXECUTION (WHEEL OVER POINT EXECUTION) alarm has
been triggered.
- The WHEEL OVER POINT or WOP EXECUTION (WHEEL OVER POINT EXECUTION) alarm has
not been acknowledged by the time the ship reaches the programmed Wheel Over Point (the course
change which, according to the Programmed Track, was intended to occur at the waypoint, has not
been triggered).
- The TRACK LIMIT alarm has been triggered.
- The COURSE LIMIT alarm has been triggered.
At service level, the signal output can be set for the alarms WP APPROACHING (WAYPOINT
APPROACHING), TRACK LIMIT and COURSE LIMIT in such a way that it takes place after a delay of
30 seconds. As a result, the signal output can be prevented by acknowledging soon enough on the unit.

Rudder Synchronisation Alarm (used only on ships with a twin rudder system)
This signal is output if the two rudders are not moving synchronously.

SPEEDPILOT Alarm
This signal is output if
- the SP DEACTIVATED (SPEEDPILOT DEACTVATED) alarm has been triggered or
- the SP INTERFACE FAULT (SPEEDPILOT INTERFACE FAULT) alarm has been triggered or
- there is a hardware fault in the Engine Interface/SPEEDPILOT Processor.

NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management 4 Status Changes of the Navigation Sensors
Operating Instructions 4.1 System Reaction to Status Changes of the Compass

4 Status Changes of the Navigation Sensors

This section describes how the system reacts if the compass, the selected speed sensor or the
selected position sensor is transmitting incorrect data or none at all, or changes its status in some other
way.

4.1 System Reaction to Status Changes of the Compass

The compass is transmitting no data or faulty data 1)

If the TRACKPILOT is active:
2)
- The alarm TP GYRO FAULT (TRACKPILOT GYRO FAULT) appears immediately .
- The external TRACKPILOT Alarm is output immediately 3).
- The external TRACKPILOT System Alarm is output immediately3).
If the TRACKPILOT is not active:
- The alarm GYRO FAULT appears immediately.
The compass is evidently transferring incorrect values
If the rate of turn computed from the change in the received heading signal is greater than is possible on
the basis of the ship’s dynamics, the alarm ROT LIMIT EXCEEDED appears.

4.2 System Reaction to Status Changes of the Speed Sensor

The speed sensor is transmitting no data or faulty data, or is marking the transmitted data as
being invalid 4)
After 40 seconds, the alarm SPEED TIMEOUT appears. After switch-off of the acoustic signal, the menu
for selection of a different speed sensor appears.
If the TRACKPILOT is active and no valid speed data are being transmitted after 60 seconds, the alarm
SPEED SENSOR FAULT appears. Cancelling of the alarm message switches the TRACKPILOT over to
Heading Mode.
If the SPEEDPILOT is active, the alarm SPEED TIMEOUT is immediately followed by the alarm SP
SPEED FAULT.
The speed sensor is again transmitting valid data4)
The alarms mentioned disappear.

1) Faulty data means the following in this section: In the data, there are formal errors, e.g. letters instead of numbers, exceeding of the value
range.
2) Immediately means the following in this section: Without a programmed delay, i.e. within a few seconds.
3) Has an effect only if there is an alarm display unit connected.
4)
If a position sensor has been selected both as a position sensor and as a speed sensor, and this sensor reports the position data as being
invalid, the alarm SPEED INVALID appears after 3 minutes (see also page 32, SPEED I NVALI D). If the automatic switch-over of the posi-
tion sensor has been activated at service level, a different speed sensor is selected automatically. If valid data are being transmitted again,
the alarm POSITION VALID appears. If the position sensor is then confirmed again as the position sensor, it is thus automatically selected
as the speed sensor too (see also page 27, POSI TI ON I NVALI D and page 28, POSI TI ON VALI D).

4 Status Changes of the Navigation Sensors NACOS xx-3, Alarm Management
4.3 System Reaction to Status Changes of the Position Sensor Operating Instructions

The speed sensor is no longer supplying Bottom Track data (but is supplying Water Track data)
or it is supplying Bottom Track data again.
The alarm LOG STATUS CHANGED (SPEED LOG STATUS CHANGED) appears immediately.
While no Bottom Track data are available, Water Track data are used.

4.3 System Reaction to Status Changes of the Position Sensor

The position sensor is transmitting no data or faulty data, or is marking the transmitted data as
being invalid
If the automatic switch-over of the position sensor has been activated at service level:
- After approx. 15 seconds, the alarm POSITION TIMEOUT appears (if no data are being transmitted)
or the alarm POSITION INVALID appears (if the transmitted data are marked as being invalid).
- When the alarm appears, ESTIMATED POSITION is selected automatically, i.e. the system now
determines the position by dead reckoning.
- If the TRACKPILOT is being operated in Track Mode, the alarm CHANGE POS.SENSOR (CHANGE
POSITION SENSOR) appears. In Track Mode, this alarm is repeated every 1 or 10 1) minutes until
the position sensor is transmitting valid data.
If the automatic switch-over of the position sensor has not been activated at service level:
- After a few seconds, the alarm POSITION TIMEOUT appears (if no data are being transmitted) or
the alarm POSITION INVALID appears (if the transmitted data are marked as being invalid).
- The display of the position sensor has the supplement INV.
- The system now determines the position by dead reckoning (but the position sensor is not switched
to ESTIMATED POSITION).
- If, after 3 minutes, there are still no valid data being transmitted, the alarm POSITION INVALID
appears.
- If the TRACKPILOT is being operated in Track Mode, and no valid data are being transmitted after
5 minutes, the alarm CHANGE POS.SENSOR (CHANGE POSITION SENSOR) appears. In Track
Mode, this alarm is repeated every 10 minutes until the position sensor is transmitting valid data.
The position sensor is transmitting valid data again
If the automatic switch-over of the position sensor has been activated at service level:
- The alarm POSITION VALID appears.
- After cancelling of the alarm, the position sensor menu appears, stating the position now being trans-
mitted by the position sensor and the deviation of this position from the position currently being used
in the system.
- With DO, a switch-over takes place back to the position sensor that had failed.
- With CNCL/MORE, ESTIMATED POSITION is confirmed.
If the automatic switch-over of the position sensor has not been activated at service level:
- The position sensor is marked again as being valid.
- Its data are used again, even if they differ considerably from the system position (dead-reckoned)
that is then valid. No alarm is given!
☞ If the TRACKPILOT is being operated in Track Mode and the position jump is greater than the
set Track Limit, the alarm POSITION FIX appears. Only when this alarm message has been
cancelled does the TRACKPILOT take over the new position.
The position sensor has changed the reception process (e.g. from DECCA to LORAN).
The alarm POS.STATUS CHANGED (POSITION STATUS CHANGED) appears immediately. The data
of the position sensor continue to be used.

1)
Depending on the setting made at service level; for DNV: 1 minute.

The position sensor has switched over from DGPS Mode to GPS Mode
If the use of the GPS Mode is permitted by menu (e.g. on the radar: Basic settings > Use of GPS = ON):
- The alarm POS.STATUS CHANGED appears immediately. The data of the position sensor continue
to be used.
If the use of the GPS Mode is forbidden by radar menu (e.g. on the radar: Basic settings > Use of GPS
= OFF):
- The system behaves as if the position sensor is declaring its data to be invalid (see above).
The position sensor has switched over from GPS Mode to DGPS Mode
If the use of the GPS Mode is permitted by radar menu (e.g. on the radar: Basic settings > Use of GPS
= ON):
- The alarm POS.STATUS CHANGED (POSITION STATUS CHANGED) appears immediately. The
data of the position sensor continue to be used.
If the use of the GPS Mode is forbidden by radar menu (e.g. on the radar: Basic settings > Use of GPS
= OFF):
- The system behaves as if the position sensor is transmitting valid data again (see above).

The position sensor is delivering data with low accuracy

If the system detects a larger position-deviation than is usual for the type of position sensor selected, the
alarm LOW POSITION QUALITY (LOW POSITION QUALITY) is output.
☞ The sensitivity of this monitoring function can be set at service level.
