QUARTER 4 MUSIC MODULE 1 and 2


“KADAYAWAN” comes from the word “Madayaw” meaning thanksgiving for nature’s
gift; warm and friendliness greeting; and to describe things that is good, valuable, superior,
and beautiful.
- It is celebrated in the 3rd week of August.
The distinguishing characteristics of the music of Kadayawan festival is its use of vibrant
and lively music of celebration to give thanks of the gods (anitos) for the good yield of
harvest in Davao.
The use of pentatonic notes that serves as their music during processions and parades.
The tempo varies from upbeat moderate to upbeat fast to portray gratefulness and
thanksgiving.
- People’s participation and indulge in its offering of food and delicacies, indigenous
cultural practices and the very enjoying Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan (Street Dancing) and
Pamulak sa Kadayawan Parade.
- “Pahinungod” or offering to their great god, the Supreme Being or “Manama”.
- In the year 1970, then Mayor Elias B. Lopez had encouraged all the Davao tribes, the
Lumads (Non-Islam and Non-Christians) and Muslims to showcase their thanksgiving
rituals.
- First name, Apo Duwaling Festival.
- It was officially named and called Kadayawan Festival by then mayor, Rodrigo Roa
Duterte in the year 1988, signifying all the goodness to the people of Davao and to the
fruits of their good labor in the bounty of good harvest and thanksgiving. The festival’s
name is derived from the Mandaya word “madayaw,” meaning treasured or valuable.

In 1988, the festival was enamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw”.
- The key highlights of Kadayawan festivals are Hiyas sa Kadayawan, Lumadnong
Gama, Lumadnong Bantawan, Sayaw Mindanaw, Indak-indak sa Kadalanan- street
dancing and Pamulak sa Kadalanan.
- Street dancing is major highlight on the Kadayawan Festival.
- Indak Indak sa Kadalanan - In this competition, Davao’s streets dance to the heart-
pounding drum beats and rhythms of pounding feet from hundreds of performers from
different parts of Mindanao. A cultural event depicting stories of Mindanao’s different
tribes through dancing.
- Musical instruments like kulintang, agong, kubing, kudlong, wind chimes, and others
will be used. Like any other street dancing competition, it needs music to set the mood,
drop the beat, and create the motivation needed to start moving.
- Music has that ability to make us feel a certain way, which is why it plays such an
immense role in dance. Different styles of music create various types of beats, which all
correspond to a specific dance style.
- Music gives life to every performance. A live performance is visually appealing to the
audience while music pleases the auditory senses.

What is a Festival?
- It is a community event celebrating a unique aspect of that community and its traditions,
often serving to meet specific religious purposes.
What are the two categories of festivals?
Religious festivals are a feast have been long been used by religious followers to honor
Gods. While the non-religious festival is focused on the cultural and heritage aspect of
our country.
Kadayawan Festival - in Davao city, is a festival of thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the
wealth of culture and the bounties of harvest and serenity of living that is derived from
Dabawenyong word, “madayaw” or good, valuable and superior in English every year in
August when the festival begins, showcasing different dances, floats and tribal costumes
and jewelry. Is said to interface three aspects: tribal, industrial and arts, and entertainment.
MORIONES FESTIVAL. This festival is held during the Holy week in the western side
of Marinduque. During this week, the moriones costume must be worn every day for a
whole week .
ATI-ATIHAN. Is a festival in honor of the Santo Niño and is celebrated by rejoicing and
energetic merriment on the streets. The name means “make believe Atis,” Kalibo in the
Aklan island of Panay.
SINULOG FESTIVAL. The native dance of Sinulog commemorates the acceptance of
the Filipino people of Christianity, more specifically, Catholicism, to replace their belief in
animalism.
MASSKARA FESTIVAL every October 19, it dramatizes the steadfast character of the
Negrenses and symbolized what the City of Smiles, Bacolod city, do best, putting on a
smiling face even with faced with challenges.
PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL. This is held in Baguio, the summer capital of the
Philippines. Its English name is The blooming Flowers Festival, “season of blooming”,
SANTACRUZAN or Flores de Mayo, which means “Flowers in May”. offerings for the
blessed Virgin Mary in Catholic churches.
MODULE 2
ELEMENTS OF MUSIC
- Rhythm is the variation of length and accentuation of a series of sound; includes beat and
everything that happens to sound in relation of time.
- Melody is associated mental motion sometimes called the memory element because it is
always remembered by listeners
- Pitch indicates the highness and lowness of the sound and is determined solely by the
frequency of molecular vibration. - Harmony refers to the manner of sound combination.
- Tempo refers to the speed of a certain musical piece. It may be slow, quick or moderate.
- Dynamic refers to the amount, strength, or volume of the sound. It may refer to the
loudness and softness of music.
- Timbre refers to the tone quality.
DANCE- is an art and a creation. As an art, it tells a story, a set of mood or expresses an
emotion. Dance varies in form. Some forms of dances are religious dance, magical dance,
commemorative dance, ceremonial dance, recreative dance, and testimonial dance.
ELEMENTS OF DANCE
- Theme it conveys the message of a dance. –
- Design is the pattern of movement in time and space.
- Movement refers to the bodily actions of the dancer that include his steps, gestures of the
arms, hands, and body and facial expression.
- Technique is the skill of movement executed by the dancer.
- Music is the auditory background to which the dancer moves.
- Costume and paraphernalia are properties worn by the dancers that help reflect the
message, customs, beliefs, and setting of the dance.
- Choreography refers to the figures and steps in dancing that enable the dancers to
perform in an organized manner.
-Scenery refers the background or setting where the dance is performed to make it more
realistic and enriching. --- - - #LITERATURE - is one of the arts that expresses human
feeling. It shows ideas or emotions through symbolic presentation in the form of short
story, poetry, drama or play and essay among others.
ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE
- Character
- Theme refers to the meaning of the play.
- Plot tells what the story about.
- Dialogue refers to the words written by the playwright and spoken by the characters in
the play.
Principles of Arts
- BALANCE – the three different kinds of balance are symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical
(informal)
- CONTRAST – refers to the difference in values, colors, textures, shape and other
elements. Contrast creates visual excitement and adds interest to the artwork
- RHYTHM – refers to a regular repetition of elements of art to produce the look and feel
of movements. It is often achieved through the careful placement of repeated components.
- UNITY – is the quality of wholeness that is achieved through the effective use of the
elements and principles of arts.

Module 3
Mandaya word madayaw, which means “good, valuable, superior or beautiful “the
celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties
of harvest and serenity of living.” In the 1970s, when then Mayor Elias B. Lopez initiated
tribal festivals featuring the lumad (native) and the Muslim tribes of Davao City where
they showcase their dances and rituals of thanksgiving. “Apo Duwaling,” in honor of the
three royalties for which Davao is famous for: Mount Apo, durian and waling-waling. 11
tribes, namely: Iranun, Sama, Bagobo-Klata, Bagobo-Tagabawa, Maguindanaon, Kagan,
Matigsalog, Maranao, Ata, Tausug and Ova Manubo. Other fruits available during the
time are mangosteen, rambutan, lanzones, marang and pomelo.

Module 4
The Kadayawan Celebration is a yearly celebration in the city of Davao in the Philippines
every August. Its name gets from the agreeable welcome "Madayaw", from the
Dabawenyo word meaning great, important, predominant or delightful. The celebration is
a festival of life, a thanksgiving for the blessings of nature, the abundance of culture, the
bounties of gather and quietness of living. This celebration held in the third seven day
stretch of August consistently which was featuring the 11 tribes of Davao City namely
Sama, Kagan, Maranao, Maguindanao, Iranun, Tausug, Klata Bagobo, Obo Manobo, Ata,
Matigsalug, and Tagabawa. APO DUWALING Is a name derived from the icons of Davao
city which is the Mt.Apo the highest peak in the Philippines , Durian the king of fruit and
Waling-Waling.
