EXPERIMENT 1

Description
The domestic refrigerator works on vapour compression refrigeration cycle. The refrigerant
vapour is compressed by means of compressor to a pressure at which temperature obtained at the
end of compression will be more then atmosphere so that at this high temperature it will reject
heat to atmosphere and will get condensed. The condensate is then allowed to pass through a
capillary so that the pressure and temperatures and lowered. Capillary device acts as a throttling
unit. At low pressure and temperature refrigerant is supplied to the evaporator where load is kept,
it absorbs the heat and refrigerant get converted into gaseous phase and it is again supplied to
compressor and cycle is repeated.
An air conditioner system or unit is used for controlling the temperature, humidity, and
sometimes the purity of the air in an interior via a refrigeration cycle.

Aim
To study the working of domestic refrigerator along with different auxiliary systems associated
with the domestic refrigerator and AC units and visually identify their components.

Fig.1 Simple Vapour Compression Cycle

Apparatus
A domestic refrigerator, an AC system

Procedure
i. Visually identify the components of the domestic refrigerator and AC systems
ii. Submit a sketch of the various components stating their locations and whether they are
located at the high or low pressure side.
iii. List and explain the functions of auxiliary components seen in the Lab.
