CHE 250 Strength of Materials

for Chemical Engineers

Due Date: Thursday, 8th June, 2023
Assignment 1
1. A member formed by connecting a steel bar to an
aluminium bar is shown in the Fig 2.1. Assuming that the
bars are prevented from buckling sideways, calculate the
magnitude of the force, P that will cause the total length of
the member to decrease by 0.25 mm. The values of the Fig. 2.1
elastic modulus of steel and aluminium are 2.1 x 105 N/mm2
and 7 x 104 N/mm2 respectively.
2. An axial pull of 35000 N is acting on a bar consisting of
three lengths as shown in Fig 2.2. if the modulus of
elasticity is 2.1 x 105 N/mm2, calculate
a) the stresses in each bar
b) the total extension of the bar

3. A specimen of a methacrylate plastic is tested in tension at room
temperature (see figure), producing the stress-strain data listed in the
accompanying table (see table below). Plot the stress-strain curve and
determine the proportional limit, modulus of elasticity (i.e., the slope of the
initial part of the stress-strain curve), and yield stress at 0.2% offset. Is the
material ductile or brittle?
