NOTE:
– Answer all questions
– Illustrate your answers with neat sketches, diagram etc., wherever necessary.
– Show detail calculations.
– If some part or parameter is noticed to be missing, you may appropriately assume it and should
mention it clearly

Q.1 A metal cantilever beam of length 2.5m fails, when UDL W kN/m is applied over entire span.
If the section of the beam is 80mm (width) x 145mm (depth) and bending stress at failure is 27.868
MPa, determine the uniformly distributed load applied on the beam. (2)

Q.2 Determine the vertical displacement of section aa and section bb. If top bar (1.8m length) have
25 mm diameter and bottom bar (1.5m length) have 15 mm diameter. Consider E=220GPa for both
bars. (2)

Q.3 Locate CG of the given section, also determine moment of inertia of the section about CG
parallel to xx and yy axis. (2)
Q.4 Draw axial force, shear force and bending moment diagram for the beam shown in figure (3)

Q.5 A steel beam is of I-section as shown in Fig. The beam is simply supported on a span of 4.5 m.
If the tensile stress is not to exceed 25 N/mm2, Find the safe uniformly load which the beam can
carry. Find also the maximum compressive stress. (4)

Q.6 Determine the reaction at support A and C for the bar shown in below figure. (2)

Q.7 Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for given beam. Internal hinge is located at D
which makes point D to rotate freely. (4)
Q.8 A metallic bar 300 mm x 120 mm x 50 mm is loaded as shown in figure. Determine the change
in volume if E=205GPa and Poisson's ratio = 0.26. Also determine the change that should be made
in 4.5MN load, in order that there should be no change in the volume of the bar. (4)

Q.9 A steel rod of 16mm diameter and 3.8m long is connected to two grips and the rod is maintained
at a temperature of 350C. if the temperature rise to 870 C and the ends yield by 1.37 mm. The stress
developed in the bar is________.
(consider E = 2.1 x 105 MN/m2 and α = 12 x 10-6/oc) (1.5)

Q.10 Draw axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams for given beam. (4)

Q.11 Write a note on strength, stiffness and stability (related to design) of any structural member.
