Tutorial sheet N0 :1 (Tension/compression) of Strength of material II – MEG401.
Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Exercise 1: Determine the normal stress in the two sections of the bar below, and the total
elongation ∆𝐿 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐸 = 2.0 × 105 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2

Exercise 2: Two prismatic rods (Fig1.) are coaxially weltered and supported by a vertical load of
45kN. The area of the rod in steel AB is 6000𝑚𝑚2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 7.83𝑔/𝑐𝑚3 , the
corresponding values of the cupper rod BC are 5100𝑚𝑚2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 8.30𝑔/𝑐𝑚3 .
Determine the maximum and minimum stress in each of the rods and draw the normal effort
diagram and the normal stress diagram .

Fig 1. Fig 2.

Exercise 3: consider the rod represented on figure3, above.

1. Draw the normal effort diagram all along the rod
2. Draw the normal stress diagram all along the rod
3. Verify the resistance of the material if the admissible stress of the material is set to be
14𝑘𝑁𝑐𝑚2
4. Calculate the deformation (elongation or shortening) of the rod
5. Deduce in terms of percentage the elongation and the shortening in the rod
Exercise 4: The maximum tensile and compressive load that a rod can support are
15.4𝑘𝑁 𝑎𝑛𝑑 6.6𝑘𝑁 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑦. If the length of this rod is 3.2m and the area of the transversal
section is 418𝑚𝑚2 , determine the difference between the maximum and the minimum length
knowing that 𝐸 = 2.07 × 105 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2.
Exercise 5: A rigid rod ABC is suspended by three cables of steel material and having equal
length initially. Calculate the tension of the cables under the effect of the rod’s weight which is
1.6𝑘𝑁. The sectional area of the cables A, B, C are respectively 6𝑚𝑚2 , 12𝑚𝑚2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 18𝑚𝑚2 .
The elasticity module of steel is 𝐸 = 2.0 × 105 𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 . What is the vertical force required to
be applied at a distance of 4.6m of A for the rods ABC to remain horizontal?

Fig 4.

Fig 3.

Exercise 6: given the steel rod above Fig 4, fixed in its upper extreme ends and tensioned by a
load of 0.8𝑘𝑁/𝑚 linearly distributed as shown on the figure below.
1. What does the force 0.8𝑘𝑁/𝑚 represents? Schematize this force in a global model
2. Verify the resistance of the rod at the dangerous section if the admissible or allowable
stress of the material 𝜎𝑎𝑑 = 150𝑀𝑃𝑎
3. Calculate the total elongation of the rod (mm) if the Young’s modulus 𝐸 =
21000𝑑𝑎𝑁/𝑚𝑚2
Exercise 7: The bar BDE is supported by two links AB and CD. Link AB is made up of aluminum
(𝐸 = 70𝐺𝑃𝑎) and has a cross-sectional area of 500𝑚𝑚2 . Link CD is made up of steel (𝐸 =
200𝐺𝑃𝑎) and has a cross-sectional area of 600𝑚𝑚2 . For the 30kN force shown, determine the
deflection of B, D and E
