TOPIC: CONCEPTION AND REALIZATION OF AN AUTOMATIC CORN SHELLING

MACHINE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION: A machine for corn shelling is a highly and greatly needed to
consistency of usage of corn in local and international levels. With to these indispensable needs,
a corn shelling machine is designed which operates to remove the corn grains and living the cobs
intact. In attainment to this realization objective and aims, a proper consideration was given to
the machinability factor which includes; installation, specification, durability choice material,
machine low cost and prolonged life span when operates with high utilization and minimal down
fine. The realization details are given which includes such items as materials and their
characteristics adaptation methodology, the parts relations with the whole device and the effect
of the finished product upon which an inquisitive mine can make collection of fact in future
which is related to this project. The project conception and realization of an AUTOMATIC
CORN SHELLING MACHINE. Is an essential one in a time like this when almost all humans
endeavor is embracing technology for efficiency and reliability. First a corn shelling exercises is
a function which could either be manually operated, mechanically or electro-mechanically
operated with the simple objectives of shelling out the grains from the cob.

Towards the objectives, an in-depth analysis of the existing similar machines was carried out and
necessary modifications base on the findings were made, such modification include using pulleys
and bolt, shape of tiny and the inclination of the discharge outlet and also spacing of the
perforation and the teeth of the barrel’s portability, ergonometric heights and aesthetic.

The aim of this study is to develop and realize an automatic corn shelling machine in other which
is easy to operate with high degree of efficiency. Compared with the other corn sheller machine
that are manually operated the corn sheller machine is relatively simple in design as we shall
see.

On the subsequent part of this documents, we are going to briefly discuss on the following.

1
 Problem statement
 Objectives of the predicting and analyzation of an automatic corn shelling machine.
 Research questions.
 Research hypotheses.
 Research methodology.
 Technical difficulties.
 Human difficulties
 Economic and commercial difficulties.
 Lastly expected results.
1. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Existing machines their advantages and their disadvantages.
a) CORN SHELLING BY HANDS

 Advantage
. It is simple

2
. compact
It be done anywhere anytime.
. Lower in cost price
 Disadvantages.

. Man power needed

. It can only work on one stick of corn at a time.

. produces small quantity of shelling and thresh maize.

b) 5 red and green maize sheller

. No man power needed as it’s a motorized maize sheller.

. machine is portable and compact.

. less skillful person is required.

. High rate of production

 Disadvantages

. expensive in cost price

. limited access for individual

3
c) John deere mechanical maize shelling machine

 Advantages
. Simple in construction
. More economical
. different sizes of corn can be shelled.
 Disadvantages
. Time delay
. less production
. Man power required

4
 Depending upon the advantages and disadvantages seen on the existing
machine above, some of the machines have their own stated limitations,
hence, the company and the society as a whole are facing some challenges
because of those limitations’ problems. Therefore, I am to design and
realize an AUTOMATIC CORN SHELLING MACHINE.

2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES.
 The main aim of this project is to overcome the traditional methods.
 To choose proper electric motor for this application base on torque, speed and
power.
 To reduce the power using belt drive and pulley system to form uniform shelling
and threshing operation.
 To construct a structure to fit all accessories to it with proper moving attachments.
 Design of shelling shaft.
 Retraction of shells from corn hubs.
 To design the threshing shaft.
 To design separate zone for corn shells and seeds
 To increase the efficiency.
 To reduce hard work
 To minimized time of production to shell or separate the corn from the shell.

3. Research Questions
A) What are the rubbing parameters at the level of the motor?
 At the level of the pulleys?
 How is friction minimized at the level of the shelling shaft?
 And at the level of the threshing shaft.?
B) How does the graph for these parameters above looks like?

5
C) What are the various difficulties faced by the motorized or automatic corn shelling
machine manufacturers in reducing the rubbing friction values?
D) How can the parameters contributing to the high rubbing friction be modified to reduce
this friction and the implications on the motor performance?
E) How does the new graph after modifications of the parameters looks like, and how we
analyze the data, use it to predict the rubbing friction values?
F) What is the challenges face during this research?
G) How can this machine be modified to the benefits of the society?
4. Research Hypothesis.
a) The pulleys, and the rolling shaft bearings increase linearly with the motor speed,
while the rolling shaft pressure also decreases with the motor speed.
b) Components loses all all increase with the motor speed except that of the pulleys.
c) At higher speed, the majority of the friction is from the rolling shaft bearing because
it is designed to support the axial trust force originating from the rotation of the motor
which increases the speed of the motor.
d) At higher speed majority of the friction from the pulleys is transmitted to the drive
belt while the pressure of the belt decreases.
e) As the motor speed increases the heat pressure at the level of the pulleys also
increases.
f) At higher speed of the rolling shaft, heat pressure is built at the level of the shaft.
5. Research Methodology.
In this research, we shall collect, analyze and predict performance from data gotten from
the automatic corn shelling machine.
6. Technical Difficulties.
The lubricant oil and tool use for the analysis will be carefully chosen to make sure that
the results can be generalized to a variety of automatic corn threshing/shelling machine
using current as a source of energy to operate.
7. Human Difficulties.
Some of these difficulties are;
 Perfect use of instruments.
 Considering all the speed of the motor when collecting data.

6
 The vibration and the noise produce
 The present state of the motor.
8. Economic And Commercial Difficulties.
The collection, analysis and prediction of friction loses and performance of the automatic
corn shelling machine will be costly because of the following;
 Renting of electrical motor
 Replacing the lubrication oil with multigrade for a period of time.
 Renting the instrument needed for collection of data like a dynamometer.
 Interpretation of data.
9. Expected results.
At the end of this research, I hope and desire that all my objectives be made. Its my wish
also that the findings of this research be useful to both the machine users and the
manufactures to improve on their satisfaction.
10. Conclusion.
This is my titled: (CONCEPTION AND REALIZATION OF AN AUTOMATIC
CORN SHELLING OR THRESHING MACHINE) I have as objective to collect and
analyze data that must be capable of meeting all the specific objectives mentioned above.
