EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Internship report is a summary of a student’s experience that many employers require to
complete its time at their organization.
An internship is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period
of time.

vii Internship
Report [2020/2021] MATGENIE KUMBA
Being part of training for obtaining a DIPET I in HTTTC KUMBA, I have been trained to
undertake this academic internship with the objective of developing my technical skills
(learning by doing) thereby initiating me in the domain of mechanical manufacturing.

I did my internship in KUMBA at MATGENIE Company from Tuesday 3rd August to

Tuesday 31st August 2021.

I thereby submit to your reading this report, fruit of my work. It is divided into four chapters:
 The first chapter presents the general introduction of the enterprise where I did my
internship.
 The second chapter describes the training I went through and the basic operations
and projects realised with respect to the gain in school carried during the various
weeks of work.
 Chapter three comes with the SWOAT analysis which examines the strength and
weakness of the enterprise.
 Finally, chapter four comes with conclusion and recommendation with reference to
the SWOAT analysis and learning outcome achieved.

At the end of this job training exercise, I realized three things which are:
- The duration for this academic internship is too small and short for us to grasp enough
technical skills – especially for those coming from the non technical background,
- The importance of setting up fabrication and manufacturing units or workshops all
throughout the country and
- The needs for our parents, government and civil society to foster technical education
through sensitization programs and the building of more equipped technical
institutions or schools.

II.2.1 Week one: 3rd to 6th August 2021

Tuesday:
Tuesday the 3rd of August marked my first day at the enterprise and I was there early enough
so as to get acquainted with my new environment. At exactly 7:30am I had a brief meeting
with the CA who reiterated on my requirements and how I need to behave in the company.
After that, I was introduced to the workers who are working in the company, and we were
assign with my other interns with whom are doing internship in the same company to
organized and keep the workshop clean, so as to have enough space..

Then to closed the day, I was given brief description on how to manufacture a piston and its
operation, the possible fault and how they can be remedy, so I was assign to do fault tracing
on the piston and repair it; I did so.

Figure 5; Fault tracing on a piston

Wednesday
I had a brief tour round the workshop in order to see and know the different machines the
company was made of and also to discover the various offices comprising the company.

We were also given lectures/explanations about the cutting and grinding operations using the
hand machines. In these lectures, the positioning of the operator and the machine, the holding
and cutting action was emphasized.
I was asked to do fault tracing of an airlock system, I did cleaning of the fuel pipe to remove
dirt particles, clean the fuel tank of an engine incase of any blockage and after cleaning has
been done I now fill in fuel into the tank.

Thursday
Upon arriving at the workshop in the morning, we were asked to jack a car that we are to
work on, which has a brake failure, I checked first there master cylinder if the is sufficient
hydraulic, later clean the system for blockage of dirt and I changed the brake path of the front
brakes. See figure below.

We then proceeded in cleaning the workshop which is a routine every Friday by interns.

II.2.2 Week two: 10th to 13th August 2021

Tuesday
I started the new week by dismantling of a ripper cylinder for power lost. See figure blow.
I was assigned by the CA to open the cylinder to know what the fault was, I open the cylinder
using a torque wrench, after removing the piston I discover that it has a bended area so had to
adjust, after strengthening the piston I couple back there cylinder.

II.2.3 Week three: 17th to 20th August 2021
Tuesday
I carried out the continuation of working on a cooling system of a car for engine overheats. I
checked first but the radiator if the is sufficient water. Later on I found that it’s the water
pump that had a cracked; so I replaced the water pump as declared by the CA.

Figure 14;Design and repair of a water pump using AUTOCAD software

Wednesday
We commenced the day’s activities by listening to the head of the welding department
explain the manual rolling machine which was design and manufactured by the enterprise and
I then proceeded to work on a flow divider because of lack of constant flow. I dismantled the
flow divider; I open to know what the fault was, I realized that the springs were weak and so I
had to replace and coupled it back. I was asked to dismantle a flywheel and check for wear,
and I did so.

CHAPTER III: ORGANIZATIONAL/DEPARTMENTAL/BRANCH

CRITICAL AND SWOT ANALYSES.

III.1 Internal potency which will help to meet the

goals/objectives/targets and fight off threads
MATGENIE Industries is financed by its owners and also by the income from contracts, and
in terms of human resources it poses a very big workshops with hundreds of machines as
listed in Chapter two above.

23 INTERNSHIP
Report [2020/2021] MATGENIE KUMBA
The enterprise is a prestigious society rendering services.

Its mission is to assure:

 Marketing of the products;

 Assisting small and medium enterprises;
 Assisting the government;
 General maintenance;
 General mechanic and automobile.

With the technological experience

 The personnel have a great professional conscience.

 The satisfaction of their clients while respecting the fabrication norms and respecting
the drawing norms of ISO.

It has very highly qualified personnel in the different post of activities (industrial,
computing…).

III.2 Internal deficiencies hindering the organization’s efforts in

achieving their targets
 The number of workers in the enterprise as a whole: Being considered as a large
enterprise, it fails in its duty to pay workers and as a result most of the workers
abandoned their post in the company and went. Some of them only come back when
there is a huge contract that has been awarded to the enterprise while at the same time
new ones are also called upon. And so, it makes work to be very tedious and
impossible as the few workers who are there when there’s no big work that has to be
present at particular posts of work when all the interns are not around thus making
maneuvering very difficult.
 There is no first aid box in the workshop: Considering the fact that while operating
the machines unwanted circumstances such as accidents, etc. may occur, there are no
first aid boxes in the workshop which will help incase case of any accident occur.
 Lack of energy source; no generator to support the organization due to the excess
light failure in Kumba, and excess dropped in voltage.
 The mismanagement of time to execute a project in a given period: knowing that
time is a very important factor in industries, the projects carried out in the workshop
are sometimes ready only after the deadline of the execution of the project. This is
because there is a limited amount of workers and other works which cause failure to
respect the specific time to execute.
 Too much relying on interns: The industry relies so much on interns in maneuvering
work. This makes it very difficult for interns to have enough time to operate the
available machines and discover new things or have more skills.

24 INTERNSHIP
Report [2020/2021] MATGENIE KUMBA
 Non-payment of staffs: the first day I arrived at the enterprise, though I was hoping
to meet a bunch of workers as stated on the organizational chart, I was left perplexed
when I discovered that just five (05) persons were on active service. After asking
some questions, I was made to understand that the other workers only come in when
there is a mega contract that has been won as was the case for the Kumba-Mamfe road
contract. This is because the company cannot afford to place all the workers on its
payroll when there is no contract to be carried out; like now workers have not been
paid for about 10 months. This means that the workers enrolment only attain its
maximum when there is a job to be done which hinders the growth of the company at
the time of their absence, the load of work available rest on the shoulders of the very
few available.
 Non respect of break time: though the enterprise has as rule for the workers to have
their one hour break between 12 and 1pm daily whether there is too much work to be
done or not, most at times it is not respected. So I recommend that the hierarchy tries
to respect it at all times and not only when work is less for the well being of its
employees. The well being of its workers should be the top priority of every
enterprise because if the workers are not well, then work won’t be accomplished.

III.3 External circumstances/trends/opportunities that favors the

organization in achieving their targets
 It has faithful and reliable clients (costumers): It has very faithful and reliable
clients like Mag sarl legarean, CBB,NODA ,TALLA REG Authority and CAMI
TOYOTA, who always provide them with markets to work on.
 Good geographical position which can be accessed at any time of the day: It is
located at entrance of the economic capital from the SouthWest which is situated in
Meme located a few miles away from BICEC junction, just beside transport office.
This makes it assessable at any time of the day.
 Some of the examples of the advantages they enjoy include: Accessibility, with
the presence of a good network of roads linking them to the other parts of the town
and the country as a whole and is a major junction in kumba town BICEC zone.
 Tax declaration: The enterprise tries its possible best to completely declare its
taxes as per the law. They prepare for the payment of taxes as per the latest finance
law.

III.4 External threats/challenges that will decrease the

organization’s effectiveness and productivity.
 The face serious competitor: Their products face serious competition from other
companies like NICAM BTP, RAZEL, TRACTAFRIC and CONTRACTOR etc., in the
25 INTERNSHIP
Report [2020/2021] MATGENIE KUMBA
competitive market in terms of wining contracts and providing professionally skilled
workers the flied.
 Payment of taxes to the state: the unpaid taxes to the state treasury may cause the
state to shut it down because of unpaid taxes.

III.5 Main problems

Though the company has some external problems which may hinder it from progressing in
the job market, there are also some internal problems which need to be addressed. These are:

 Some interns don’t respect the security rules.

 Insufficient amount of cutting tools and measuring tools.
 The mismanagement of the staff.
 Lack of holding element of the work piece on the pillar drilling machine during
machining, etc.

CHAPTER IV: CONCLUSIONS,

RECOMMENDATIONS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

IV.1 Conclusion
For the whole month of August, I had the privilege of carrying out my academic internship in
the enterprise MATGENIE KUMBA which has a very calm and encouraging entourage.

The enterprise MATGENIE KUMBA. is a very good version of the society and country as a
whole because it is aimed at training highly skilled technicians, helping small and medium
company grow with the help of their highly trained and skill expertise and experience in the
professional field and the various dozens of machines available at their disposal to train them.

But with their high version in mind and with respect in respect to the emergency plan of 2035
by the head of state, they enterprise must try and solve most of it internal problems or
deficiencies hindering the company advancement in the midst of serious competitors.

Report [2020/2021] MATGENIE KUMBA
The company must be able to pay taxes to avoid been shut down and if this happens it means
the clients might turn somewhere else, which will seriously cause harm to the enterprise in
terms of fall in their market. And moreover the company has a very good geographic location
which is very advantageous to them in terms of accessibility.

I have been enshrined with various methods and techniques used in enterprises. At the end of
the last week I was acquitted with the various machines and how to use them.

IV.2 Recommendation
Even with the results obtained which proved to be far more satisfactory, there is still much to
do as regards my personal improvement. Below are some recommendations that will enable
future interns to be more comfortable and that will generally improving the working
conditions at MATGENIE KUMBA.

- Install a radio program: I would like to recommend that the management of

MATGENIE KUMBA workshop come up with a radio program that will help
sensitivity the locality of BUEA, and Cameroon at large concerning the services they
render at the company such as mechanical diagnosis, electrical diagnosis,
construction, manufacturing, automobile and welding. They should also go along to
adopt the principal language which is English at their place of work rather than
pidgin. More so, the closing time should be respected.
- Renovate the intern’s restroom: Knowing that the rest room is very important fact
in every enterprise which enables workers to change their clothes and perform other
issues, the director general most do all that is possible in his power to renovate the
rest room which will enable workers and interns do their necessary clean up at the end
of the day.

As for the university’s internship programmed they should enhanced and help students do
their internships in companies where the student will actively participate in the day to day
work in the company’s workshop so that at the end of the internship, the student must have
been able to work and not looking as if it was a video and leave the place with some
knowledge in mind.

IV.3 Learning Outcomes

During my internship in MATGENIE KUMBA Enterprise, we carried out three main projects
which are:

 Design (01) piston, repairs of a Final drive pump and a ripper cylinder.

Report [2020/2021] MATGENIE KUMBA
As a result of these projects, many tasks emerged which enabled me as an intern to gain a lot
of professional experiences. These tasks are:

 Coupling of the ripper cylinder.

 Coupling of the final drive pump.
 Machining of screws to be used in the mounting of the pump; turning and facing on
the Centre Lathe Machine.
 Mounting of Ripper cylinder.
 General maintenance.

There are also some aspects of my responsibilities that I liked during my stay at the
enterprise.

 The manner in which they receive me; they were very hospitable.
 The workers took time to briefly explain a project before embarking on it.
 They workers were very friendly, very conscious, dynamic and concentrated
when it time for work.
 They encourage interns to be courageous, believe in their self and always have
team spirit.

I liked the following aspects above because being one of the English speaking intern and
more over bilingual, it gave me an upper hand on understanding of certain principles in the
workshop and express myself better in French also.

The application of theoretical knowledge acquired from H.T.T.T.C Kumba courses like:
Strength of materials, technical drawing/ CAD, manufacturing and workshop practice was
efficiently applied in practical situation I was confronted with.

All pieces realized in this period was first drawn with a freehand sketch then preceded by
using CAD to draw it.

The internship was destined to impact my career advancement with a lot of professional
knowledge on how and when to use the ideas both in the teaching and professional flied. And
it has enhance some basic ideas in me like observing, analyzing and with this two ideas it
with help me very much in career advancement.

My internship at the enterprise had a lot of implication there because it has encouraged the
workers to learn English because in the profession, they are many technicians with different
languages and has also laid a path for future interns to make that their internship to be very
interesting and ready to learn no matter the conditions.
