MACHINE AND EQUIPMENT

• Equipment:
For the repair and maintenance of the vehicles various equipment are needed. They provide
an easier means to perform a task in an easy and efficient manner. Various modern tools save
time and reduce the strength to do a certain job. Material and parts handling become easier
with modern tools so that the parts of the vehicles are not damaged while repairing.
Some of the equipment that are used are listed below:
3.1.1 Toolbox

Nuts and bolts of various sizes need to be opened during repairing the vehicle. A toolbox
contains many of the tools like sockets, wrenches, combinations, hammer, screwdrivers,
ratchet, claw hammer, L-N keys, T-handle, etc.

3.1.2 Wrenches

Wrenches are the tools used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to
tighten or loosen nuts and bolts. The most common shapes are called open-ended
spanner and ring spanner.

Fig 3.1.2 Wrench

9
3.1.3 Sockets

Socket wrenches come in sets for a wide variety of size, depending on requirements. Socket
extenders are indispensable items that help to reach those almost-unreachable nuts and bolts.

Fig 3.1.3 Sockets

3.1.4. Screw drivers

Screwdriver is a small handy tool, usually manual, for driving or removing screws. It has a
handle, a shaft and a tip. The tip has either plus “+” or minus “-” cross-section which fits into
the screw head while turning the screw. The shaft is usually made up of toughened steel so
that the tip does not wear easily.

Fig 3.1.4.1 Screwdriver

Pliers

Pliers are hand tool used to hold objects firmly, possibly developed from tongs used to handle
hot metal. They are also useful for bending and compressing a wide range of materials.

Fig 3.1.4.2 Pliers

10
3.1.5 Hammer

A hammer is a tool or device used to deliver a blow (a sudden impact) to an object. Most
hammers are hand tools used to drive nails, fit parts, forge metal, and break apart objects.
Hammers vary in shape, size, and structure, depending on their purposes.

Fig 3.1.5 Hammer (simple)

3.1.6. Extension rods

There are many bolts that are hard to reach so that we cannot directly work with wrenches.
These rods are simply rods with ends that fit into the sockets. Whenever a mechanic is taking
off a part deep in the engine bay, or tearing out a transmission, a variety of extensions will
certainly make work easier.

Fig 3.1.6 Extension rods

3.1.7 Hydraulic Jack and Lift

A hydraulic lift is a type of machine that uses a hydraulic apparatus to lift or move objects
using the force created when pressure is exerted on liquid in a piston. There are various
types of hydraulic equipment being used in workshops. They are: a. Engine lifter:

Any internal combustion engine used in vehicles is heavy and hence its installment and
removal is certainly a tedious task. This engine lifter uses hydraulic power to lower or lift the
engine.

11
Fig-3.1.7.1 Engine Crane

Two post lift

Two post lift has two posts for mechanical support and has pivot arm to hold the vehicle.
It is driven by screw lift system and is safer than that four post lift. This post is used for
general servicing and does the work of differential problem. Changing of wheel axle bearing,
servicing maintenance is done in this post. This post is able to withstand a mass of 4 ton.

Fig-3.1.7.2 Two post lift

12
Screw jack
This is also a simple movable hydraulic jack. This type of jack is generally useful during
hub greasing to raise front and rear chassis.

Fig-3.1.7.3 Screw jack

There is also a hydraulic lift that used to raise and lower the gear box of heavy commercial
vehicles.

Fig-3.1.7.4 Gear box lifter

• Air Compressor

It is a pneumatic device that converts power (using an electric motor, diesel or gasoline engine,
etc.) into potential energy stored in pressurized air (i.e., compressed air). By one of several
methods, an air compressor forces more and more air into a storage tank, increasing the pressure.
The compressed air used for different process like drying the washed engine block by means of
pneumatic air gun or to wash the vehicles. The air compressor also helps to run the pneumatic
gun. The principle behind the pneumatic gun is that it uses the pressure of compressed air to rotate
the barrel of gun. Electrically operated compressor compresses air. It is used to lock and unlock
nuts and bolts. It is driven by high speed and high torque motor which rotates the socket.

13
Fig-3.1.8.1 Air compressor Fig-3.1.8.2 Pneumatic gun

3.1.9 Hydraulic Press

A hydraulic press is a device using a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive force.

Fig-3.1.9 Hydraulic press

3.1.10 Grinding machine

Grinding is a material removal and surface generation process used to shape and finish
components made of metals and other materials. The precision and surface finish obtained
through grinding can be up to ten times better than with either turning or milling.

Fig-3.1.10 Grinding machine

14
3.1.11 Gear oil pump and Dispenser
This simple mechanical hand driven device helps to put gear oil in the differential. The use
of this device eliminates the difficulty of putting oil through the horizontal opening of the
differential housing. In order to change the lubricating oil, the old oil must be run off and it
is to be discharge into an oil dispenser.

Fig-3.1.11.1 Gear oil pump

Fig-3.1.11.2 Oil Dispenser

3.1.12 Piston ring compressor and extender

This cylindrical device is very useful during the engine assembly. The three types of ring in
the piston are very sensitive to axial stress and may break easily. To assemble the piston
cylinder arrangement without any damage to the ring or the cylinder liner this device proves
useful. Also in order to remove this rings a device is used which is called as extender.

Fig -3.1.12.1 Piston ring compressor Fig-3.1.12.2 Piston ring extender

3.1.13 Torque wrench

A torque wrench is used where the tightness of screws and bolts is crucial. It allows the
operator to measure the torque applied to the fastener, so it can be matched to the
specifications for a particular application. This permits proper tension and loading of all parts.
This device was mostly employed during tightening the nuts and bolts of the engine head.
15
Fig-3.1.13 Torque wrench
3.1.14 Bearings and hub bearing puller:
Bearings in automobiles are present at many locations including the gear box, differential,
engine, hub, compressor and many more. These bearings play a vital role in smooth operation
of the vehicle as a whole. So during the course of repair they need to be dissembled and then
re assembled without any damage. The bearing puller is clamp onto the bearing where the
screw thread mechanism of the bolt pushes the bearing outward. The roller tapering bearings
present on the hub are eventually removed with the help of hub bearing puller.

Fig-3.1.14.1 Hub bearing puller Fig-3.1.14.2 Bearing puller

3.1.15 Filter chain

The filter chain is a local tool that is used to unscrew the ceased filter. The filter may be both
diesel and oil filter.

Fig-3.1.15 Filter Chain

16
3.1.16 Valve spring compressor and coil spring compressor
The single valve spring compressor is used to compress one valve spring at a time. This
allow for valve spring retainer removal or installation. The coil spring needs to be
compressed in order to change in case of failure. The compressor is clamped at the both
ends and a blot is screwed to push it.

Fig-3.1.16.1 Valve spring compressor Fig-3.1.16.2 Coil spring compressor

3.1.17 OBD
On-board diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and
reporting capability. OBD systems give the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status
of the various vehicle subsystems. Preliminary, it was use to check the emission pollutant but it
uses data or signals from various sensors that ultimately actuates the actuator to perform its work.

Fig-3.1.17: OBD

Apart from these instruments various other gauges, oil can, pullers were used by the
mechanics during the working period.

A. Delegation of authority and responsibility.

• Employee and employer’s problems solving.
• Customer satisfaction and good customer relation.
• Increase profitability of an enterprise.
• Mobilization of workers and distribution of work load.
• Eliminate bottlenecks to avoid work congestion.
• Employee relations and increase efficiency of workers.
• Money value of time and punctuality.

Besides, I learned through experience how to interact and communicate with people. I knew
that people have different characteristics and attitudes. From the interaction with mechanics
and workers I learned how and what types of tool are to be used according to the type of cases
and how to handle and tackle different issues. Although I worked and interact with them for
a short period of time, I learned a lot from them; the skills and techniques that they shared
with me that cannot be found on the books. I learned about the management system of a
company. I learned warranty policies of different parts of automobile, for example the
warranty of an engine is 3 years. I learned about what is PDI, VI, how it is done and the
factors to be considered during PDI and VI. OJT helped me to know about different parts of
automobile and the position as well as function of these parts. Yes, it is a big deal to buy a
vehicle, but the performance of vehicle should be maintained in optimum condition. To
maintain the optimum performance, the vehicle should service periodically. The following
things are to be checked before running the vehicle:
• Different oil levels should be checked.
• Before turning on the key, the gear should be in neutral.
• Air filter should be cleaned regularly and should be replaced after cleaning three times.
• While cleaning air filter, the low-pressure air is blown from inner to outer through vertical
movement.
• Before placing air filter engine should not be started.
• Leakage from exhaust manifold should be checked for proper efficiency of turbo charger.
• The engine should be raced after placing engine in ideal for one to two minutes.
• Until the temperature of engine drops to air temperature the pressure cap of radiator should
not be opened.
• The coolant should be mixed with antifreeze as prescribed by the company.
24
• The antifreeze and water mixture should be in 30:70 ratio.
• The pressure of tyre should be checked always and is as prescribed by the company.
After running vehicle for 20,000 km the following things should be done:
• King pin, steering shaft, steering linkage, propeller shaft, front and rare spring pin should
be lubricated.
• Front and rear suspension U bolt should be tightened.
• Whether the brake oil has leakage or not should be checked.
• In every six month, brake oil should be changed.

well as detect and solve the various problems that may arise in the vehicles. I was able to
strengthen our theoretical knowledge into a more meaningful practical life.

My first few days were a training phase wherein I was trained for different technical tasks.
Later, I was assigned with some service engineer tasks, under the supervision of my field
supervisor. The assigned and accomplished tasks included job card entry and job order
placement, , data entry on computers, customer dealing and follow ups, problem analysis of
customers and drawing possible solution, general servicing of customer’s vehicles, special
problem diagnosis and repairs along with opportunity to dismantle the damaged and worn
